We didn't have a honeymoon and this was our first holiday away together alone. Therefore, it was important to pick the right resort for our 20th wedding anniversary. After lots of research we decided on the Hilton Beach Resort at Denarua. It was recommended by a colleaque and trip advisor had many excellent reviews.

The flight through Air Pacific from Sydney was great although the flight arrival and departure times are not advantageous. We were picked up from the airport by the resorts series 7 BMW.....this made a great start to the holiday. We didn't arrive at the resort until quite late but the resort helped by booking a restaurant that we decided upon and then driving us there .... once again in a BMW!!

After dinner we went back to our room .... this is the most amasing room I have seen in any resort anywhere in the world. Full kitchen .... seperate living .... seperate bedroom .... bathroom and laundry. The balcony had a rinnai gas BBQ and the appliances in the room were lush.... plasma TVs (yes 2), Bose sound system, playstation 2, dvd and cd player , espresso machine, dish washer etc. The only thing we regretted was not taking some CDs / DVDs so we had something to watch / listen to as the radio didn't always play the music you wanted and the movies on the satellite seemed to repeat.

The bed was really comfortable and the room was quiet even though we looked out across the pools and restaurant towards the ocean. Actually the view out into the open ocean was stunning.

The staff were amazing ... nothing was a problem ... everyone seemed to know it was our anniversary and the resort gave us a bottle of bubbles and fruit platter on the anniversary day. We started our anniversary day with a 3.5 hour jet ski safari.... I strongly recommend to anyone .... the jet ski was new and we got to drive (i.e. fly across the water) for about 2.5 of the 3.5 hours between the islands in the open ocean. The guide took us to a sand bar out in the open ocean where we snorkelled in the warm blue water and feed the fish which surrounded us..... amazing.

We also spent a lot of time out on the hobbiecats. The good thing about this resort is everything is new. I have been to many resorts in the past were equipment is either really old and not very functional or totally broken from misuse / age.

The BBQ on our balcony was fantastic ... we bought fresh live mud crabs from a couple of ladies just outside the Denarua Island main gate. There is also a really good butcher about 5-10 mins drive out of the main gate. The butcher also sells some fish.

Denarua Island is a must to visit as there are many resorts on the island and a free "Bula Bus" which commutes between the resorts and to the Port where you can buy groceries and clothes etc do banking and eat in restaurants. The "Bula Bus" is great as it allows you to visit the other resorts without hassle and it is alot of fun. I was concerned about the idea of being trapped on one island cos if you don't like food etc you are stuck without escape.

Important note with the "Bula Bus" take note of the sign on the front where the driver is. Some people got frustrated as the bus goes in a loop. The sign says "From Port Denarua" or " To Port Denarua" so if you are going to the port you need to get the right bus as it will take alot longer as it will loop around all the resorts before going to the Port. Also make sure you get the Blue Bula Bus as the pink one only loops around the Sheraton resort.

Many people have complained about the beach. I thought it was ok. At least you could walk in bare feet on the sand - there was no coral and the water was warm and clean.

We only ate breakfast at the resort and the food was always consistent - had good variety and good service.

I will definately go back and would recommend to my friends.

We have just returned from 5 nights at this resort. I chose it because it was rated 5 stars, but the restaurant was a huge disappointment.

We stayed in a 2 bedroom villa which was very nice with an ocean view. Yes, I agree that the pools are very nice, however they are not child friendly and have nothing for fun for the kids (like a pool slide at the Sofitel) nor a shade cloth over any of the pools (like the Radisson).

The resort itself lacks atmosphere. There is no entertainment or Fijian singers. It is quite boring for adults after you put your child in the kids club.

There is only one restaurant, and this was a huge disappointment. The buffet breakfast was the worst I have ever had. There is no a la carte. The staff look disgruntled and unhappy. They could care less if you show up and a table is dirty. You have to trip them if you want a cup of coffee, and I highly suggest skipping the coffee. It is utterly disgusting. I couldn't drink it! You're much better going to the pattisserie and getting a cup of coffee there after your breakfast. The buffet breakfast is dirty and doesn't get restocked. My 3 yr old daughter is allergic to sesame and nuts and broke out in a rash because of cross contamination. Don't go to the egg station. I couldn't even get a proper poached egg. They look like they had been sitting in the pan since the night before and the people behind the counter have no idea how to cook eggs. After breaking the eggs into a disgusting mess on my toast I told them to forget it and just ended up having bread for breakfast.

Lunch & dinner are no better. You will wait for ages to get food even if they are not busy. And the food is very disappointing once it does finally come out. It's below average and very expensive.

I wanted to check out and leave the resort after the first day at the restaurant. I couldn't imagine why anyone would want to holiday at a resort with such disgusting food and service that is suppose to be 5 stars.

The restaurant manager is Fijian & nice, but to be honest he was more interested in singing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star to my daughter instead of managing the restaurant. In my opinion they need to fire all staff at the restaurant and start again!

After talking to people we were told to go to the Sofitel for breakfast and we finally did on our last day in Fiji. What a highlight! Even though our breakfast at the Hilton was included I couldn't stomach another morning there and we caught the bula bus to the Sofitel for a real breakfast. It was beautiful! Live Fijian singing through the breakfast, an immaculately clean buffet with a manager walking around to make sure everything was done properly, beautiful homemade breads and jams (the pumpkin bread was heavenly!), perfect poached eggs, fresh squeezed juices, etc. The people at the Hilton need to go to the Sofitel to see how a real breakfast buffet should be done. You can even get a nice cappucinno!

We also stopped eating dinner at the Hilton's restaurant and had a nice meal at the Steakhouse at the Westin with fantastic service. For lunch you are better off going to the Hilton's patisserie and getting a sandwich and fruit salad.

The kid's club at the Hilton is probably the nicest of all the ones we looked at (we saw the Sheraton's, Sofitel,'s, & Radisson), but if your child has allergies I highly recommend you turn on international roam on your mobile phone before you leave, which we didn't do. Fijians know absolutely nothing about food allergies and will not administer an epi pen if something goes wrong. They bring food into all of the kid's clubs for the children, and with our daughter being anaphylactic to sesame & nuts this was a big problem. Hilton hardly had any kids in the club whilst we were there and didn't have much in the way of Fijian activities. Just playing in the sand pit, watching TV, or painting were the main things my daughter did. I was shocked that they didn't have pagers for the parents so they could get in touch if something went wrong. I guess I took this for granted when we were on the cruise ship in Hawaii & I put my daughter in a very well run kid's club.

  • Liked — The room- very nicely decorated and comfortable
  • Disliked — Noisy- we were below another villa and could hear people walking above us

Went there for a few days for the tail end of our honeymoon. It was the perfect way to relax and unwind. The staff was very friendly, the views amazing and I can't say enough about the bed!

Altough things at the resort are higher priced, that is to be expected, it is a island resort. The restuarant had excellent food. Try buying drinks at the market pier and bring them back to your room instead of ordering from hotel, much cheaper.

The infiinity pool is amazing, but not very deep.

Plan to go back again

We stayed at the Hilton in February 2007 for what was supposed to be our honeymoon. The day before we left my granfather had been diagnosed with cancer, so I was not in the best of moods. We arrived at reception and they gave us cool washcloths and cold drinks while we checked in, then we were driven to our room in a buggy. We had booked a deluxe room and it was not what I had expected based on the picture on the web site, which suggests there us a plunge pool outside the door. In fact, the ground floor room was quite dark, the only ocean view that could be seen was if you lie on the bed and the lounge room looked out onto a path and a concrete wall, with hotel staff wandering around and smiling and waving every time you went into the lounge room (i wanted some privacy and was in no mood for that). After a walk along the beach, which was pretty much grey sand, I was still upset and wanted to change to the sofitel (which we had seen during our walk), but my husband convinced me to see what we can do about changing rooms. In the end they 'downgraded' us to a standard room which overlooked the pool and the beach and had plenty of light ... much better. The guy that drove us to the room said the place was pretty much deserted because of the coups, so in my opinion it wouldn't have hurt them to upgrade us, it was our honeymoon after all.

We ended up having dinner at the restaurant at the hilton (nuk nuk?) yep, its yuk. It was really difficult to get through the thick skin of the snapper which was very small and undercooked, on the other hand my husband had the mango and chicken fried rice which was very bland but could have fed four people. Breakfast the next morning was not that great either, pretty ordinary coffee, weird coco pops, but the pineapple was nice.

So the next morning I was looking for a calling card to call back to Australia, but the shop at the hilton doesn't sell those and apparently you have to go into nadi to get them. So we went for a swim and then back to the room and I called reception to ask what the rates were to call to Australia - the person who answered didn't know and had to check with their supervisor, and said she would call me back, so I waited about 10 minutes, no call, called reception again, someone else who didn't know and would call me back. By then my husband came back from the pool and I told him I was still waiting for someone to call me back to tell me the rates. He said just call don't worry about it.

spoke to my uncle who told me that my grandfather will only live a few weeks. That was not what we expected and my husband went to reception to organise for us to go home immediately. The people at reception were very helpful in calling the airport etc and once the flights were organized they said we could stay in the room until 2pm when the cab would take us to the airport. so that was nice of them, it was a miserable wait for a couple of hours, sitting on the balcony looking over the pool while it rained.

Then when we went to settle the bill the person at the desk said we had to pay for that night as well as the previous one. When we said the previous person said we could check out at 2, his response was that they could have made us pay for the entire 8 nights that we had booked. The travel insurance covered it anyway, but it didn't leave me with a good impression. So, I won't be going back to the Hilton in fiji, actually it put me off hilton altogether. (PS, I have a great husband :-)

My new husband and I honeymooned at the Hilton for 7 days and we had an amazing experience from start to finish, we were very sad to leave!
After a long flight from the States, we were picked up from the airport in a new 7 series BMW with cold towels and water (F$45, expensive compared to taxis, but totally worth it after the trip). We arrived at the hotel and were pleased to find out that we'd been upgraded to a 1 bedroom villa. After a short golf-cart trip to our room, we were blown away by the room. A large bathroom, well appointed kitchen, 2 plasma TVs, patio with Bar-B-Q, washer/dryer, large comfy bed, complementary champagne... We arrived late in the evening so we pretty much went to sleep after checking out our amenitites and a quick shower. The next day (and several days afterwards) were spent lounging by the pool which is very large (and a little chilly) with lots of lounge chairs and umbrellas. Poolside service brings you all the food and drinks you'd like from extremely friendly staff. The water sports bure is a short walk from the pool. We organized only jetskiing, but you could also rent sailboats and windsurfers, parasailing, etc.
The food at this resort is much discussed on these reviews. Frankly, I thought it was OK, nothing to write home about, but the selection was reasonable if you're open to different types of food, and the quality was good. We ate the breakfast buffet nearly every day and we were stuffed. There's a great selection of breads and sweets, fresh juices, made to order eggs, fruit, etc. We never ate dinner at the restaurant, but we had room service a few times. We had pizza and gelato at the deli a few times whic was a good alternative to the restaurant menu. A great feature of the hotels on this island is the free Bula Bus which takes you to the other resorts. We ate at Radisson and Westin which both had good food.
Hilton had a great travel/activities desk that arranged 2 excursions for us. Both were very good and reasonably priced and the person who arranged them, made sure to tell us exactly what to bring on each trip (beach towels, snacks, change of clothes, etc.).
Overall a really great stay at the resort. We also spent 2 nights at the Sheraton and did not enjoy our stay there nearly as much as Hilton (see my other review). If you're trying to decide which hotel to choose on Denarau Island, you absolutely much choose Hilton!
