“Great resort just costly to dine”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2013

A great place to stay with great pool facilities and great staff. Have been back 3 years in a row and possibly needs a facelift in the rooms now as they are ageing quickly. The restaurants are limited with children and very expensive if you are an accor member. Make sure you factor in at least an extra $100 per day on F&B per person to cater for the pricing. Don't like the fact that pricing is compared with Australian dollars! We are not Australian and don't really care as we take FJD - keep it real FIJI and keep your prices in FJD only! Also was confused with the French influence .... we are in Fiji not France!
Overall a great place to stay though with friendly staff :)

We stayed 10 days at the Sofitel for a relaxing holiday, and after exploring the other hotels in Denarau during this time, it seems there are better options.

The Sofitel has a fantastic pool area, but good luck finding a shaded spot if you're not up bright and early and planning on spending your entire day by the pool. Most guests collected their pool towel first thing, used it to reserve a deck chair, then went off to breakfast/lunch/drinks and the hotel does nothing to stop it. We found after a morning at golf/tennis/brunch at the port, there weren't enough shady spots to relax by the pool, so ended up in our room or on the balcony for the afternoon.

As for the food, average is being kind - particularly at Salt, very overrated. Much better dining experience at the Sheraton and the cafe at the Port. And don't even think about getting coffee from latitude 17 bar.

The rooms are nice, all have a balcony with ocean view which is good. Clean, quiet, no complaints. iPod dock in the room was a good touch. Spacious bathroom, large shower.

30 mins free wifi each day in the lobby is good too, rather than paying stupid rates for in-room wifi.

Some staff were friendly and super helpful - eg activities staff and porter, but others (front desk, housekeeping) not so much.

The hotel seemed to have minimum damage from December cyclone although the gardens and plants showed extensive damage. We had a fabulously relaxing 6 day stay and the staff and service were very good and attentive. Our room was very clean and well serviced daily with all that you would expect from Sofitel hotel (including evening turndown service and complementary water by the bed.) There were a lot of families as well as couples when we were there and at times it was difficult to find some children free' zones. Relaxing massage in the on-site day spa was great and the choice of eating areas a bonus in the resort. We avoided the main Lagoon area at breakfast time & for the theme evenings as a bit busy for us, however the Parisiene cafe just to the right of the enterance does excellent coffee and snack breakfasts, and was a lovely peaceful spot to start the day. The food in V restaurant was excellent & the service fawless. The Salt' eating area has a limited choice menu with a great view. Vinaka Sofitel Fiji, we had a lovely time.

Room Tip: Luxury ocean view if you can

On our second visit we were struck by the destruction from the hurricane- no beach, gardens destroyed, roofs destroyed, etc. we were also struck by the work being done to repair the damage as quickly as they could. There were work crews all over the resort which was amazing as most of them would have had damage to their own homes and villages.
The staff once again were attentive, polite and friendly. My husband was even recognised by one of the senior staff!! The pool was not too busy (& not too hot between 10&4)
The child-free area of the main restaurant is not policed enough at breakfast and after suffering some feral children, we moved to Salt for our second breakfast with really attentive service from Lily and her staff, thank you. The birds in both areas were not a problem!!
Our suite was great, even though we could see that renovation was going to be a good idea, with requests to maintenance handled very quickly and we look forward to returning later this year.

Room Tip: Ground floor oops allow quick access to all areas

The hotel is located in a lovely spot, and parts of our stay were great but overall I would not recommend it, I think there are better run and more friendly hotels in Denarau. We had problems with our room, getting into the room, our internet connection and settling the bill at the end. Some of the staff were lovely and most helpful, others you felt were there under duress and would much rather be elsewhere. The gardens and pool are lovely and clean.

My second stay at Sofitel Resort and Spa and it only gets better. All one requires for a relaxing holiday is within easy access. I booked an Ocean View Luxury Room and that is exactly what we got (not just a glimpse of the ocean). Luxury room with the most amazing long pillows and service second to none.
