“GHC Verona, NJ”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 26, 2013 via mobile

We stayed at las casitas one bedroom casita for four nights in late Dec 2013. We enjoyed our stay there. The amenities are top notch and the property is huge. There seems to be plenty of staff on site and most are friendly. We did find the bath rooms to be dated and the floor tiles needed to be mopped and grout needed to be steam cleaned. We found two cock roaches and called to have room exterminated. We did not expect this at a property of this level and price that we paid. Palimino beach was pleasant and had plenty of areas to sit but beach was a bit rocky. We ate at palimino and food was pretty good. The infinity pool views were spectacular from both the pool and hot tub. There are plenty of amenities at palamino island most of which you need to pay extra for, in my opinion most should be included in your resort fees. Golf course was in rop shape except for 18th hole where some work was being done. Golf was a bit pricey and guests should be given some better pricing. We did enjoy the bar area and the free pool and air hockey. Overall if rooms were cleaner and certain aspects a bit cleaner this could be a 5 star resort. The exterior of the property was beautiful in most cases and nicely land scaped. The on site starbucks was a plus as well.

Dear GHCVeronaNJ,

Thank you for honoring us with your first TripAdvisor review. We were thrilled by your positives comments and humbled by the areas where we could improve. Your advices were very enlighted as we are indeed performing some of the work you described: steaming floors and replacing bathroom grout. Some of this work is very time consuming and we have not completed every villa yet, but every day that passes we get closer to the end.

We would really like to earn this 5 star designation from you on a future visit.

Best regards,

We stayed for four nights and had a great time. The infinity pool views at Las Casitas was spectacular. We visited Palomino Island and had a very pleasant time on this Private Island there are a lot of water sports to do with a fee, which I feel most should be included in your fees. ie snorkeling, rafts, and all non motorized sports. Charging .50 for a ping pong ball? Enjoyed drinks and lunch brought right to your lounge chair.

Let me start by saying that Las Casitas is just one part of the very large El Conquistador resort. Therefore, the review of the room is for Las Casitas, while the review of the restaurants and other amenities is for El Conquistador.

We stayed in a one bedroom, which was a comfortable size. However, everything else about it, from the type of bed to the bathroom fixtures, the plastic flowers and plastic fruitbowls were in line with three star places.

The grounds are pretty and we really liked Palomino Island, including the ferry ride there. The island has a native feel to it, which is very nice, but the sun beds and all amenities were again mediocre.

The fine dining restaurant prices are in line with good restaurants in New York City, but not the presentation or the quality of food. A $40.00 steak should be presented beautifully, not with half a tomatoe and nothing else.
Having said this, there are plenty of places in the resort for casual dining where one can get a sandwich or salad that is reasonably priced.

In summary, I have been a Manhattan resident for 30 years and know the Waldorf Astoria hotel very well. This resort is no Waldorf Astoria.

This is a fabulous resort if you want a quiet retreat and to spend time at the beach. Palimino Island is fantastic. There is no night life at this resort so it meant for a relaxing vacation. It made my wife very happy.

Awesome place, will be going back next year. It takes your breath away when you first drive up. The views are incredible.....like a piece of heaven. Food/drink prices are bit too high. The landscaping is amazing, the employees are friendly and helpful. Enjoyed everything about it.

I stayed in Las Casitas for the first time, and the room was so beautiful. fRont and Back porch. Large Bathroom. Perfect view overlooking the ocean. The hotel was crowded, but where we were was just us. It was my husband and I and my two grown kids. My kids thought the room was excellent. We were mostly gone all day only one day it rained so hard, we just stayed in. It was my husband's first time and he loved it. Casistas was beautiful and all that it said. I read trip advisor before I book this hotel, and I don't regret one bit of it.

I am old school…Once upon a time before Blackstone bought Hilton, there was only one Waldorf Astoria Hotel on Park Avenue in New York City and It was an Icon. It was a standard of excellence. Now that Blackstone bought hilton, it has done what most equity firms do.. it has no pride of service or care of reputation. It cares only about financial profit and return on investment.
This is clear in this stay at las casitas as it carries the name of the newly introduced Waldorf Collection of Hilton properties, signifying that this is to the standard set at the THE Waldorf over decades. This leads to people in the know to choose any hotel that carries this Waldorf branding.

Only to discover that it is a marketing ploy..the standard is not there. This hotel is a 3-4 star at best and offers little in the way of detail and accommodation.

Negatives are….cleanliness, fit and finish is poor and location is isolated.
It would be like buying a mercedes that was built with Kia parts…you know its just not real..its a copy and a poor imitation at that. I had requested that the manager call me first thing this morning to discuss my early check out since arriving last night…its noon.. no call yet..

Hilton.. Please pay respect to the Waldorf name and stop bastardizing it by this marketing ploy..
or at least, make sure where the Waldorf name is used..that the property is trained and the fit and finish reflects what the name has always indicated.

Room Tip: No breakfast or food available at Las casitas.

Dear pgblack,

I have very much appreciated our conversation though I regret it was under such circumstances. "To discerning travelers, Waldorf Astoria is the brand of luxury Hotels and Resorts that offers a unique service experience at the world’s landmark hotels". This is what we promote and as a guest what you deserve. Rest assured your feedback is not lost on our journey to accomplish this mission.
