“Night Tour”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 18, 2012 via mobile

We chose this over kayaking the bioluminescent bay as my wife does not swim. We booked on line at their website two weeks prior to our trip and got the last spots available on the English speaking tour (max 20). We picked our night by checking the phases of the moon and picking the darkest night. An English and Spanish tour were running at the same time. The English tour was full but there were openings in the Spanish tour. The tour lasted 2 hours and included a visit to the lighthouse, were a PowerPoint presentation on bioluminescence and light pollution was shown. We then walked the boardwalk and played in the water to see it light up. Our final stop was the dry forest and beach. Our guide caught and released several small animals and insects that he showed us. My 16 year old son thought the tour was OK (a rave review from a teenager) while my wife and I enjoyed it a great deal.

“Complaints”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2012

Our tour started late 15 minutes waiting for 2 persons, even though they made everyone be there half an hour earlier. The tour guide was slow, kept conversing a long time with people instead of keeping a pace with the tour. Also, we suggest people bring something to drink. The place is far away from the city and there are no machines for soft drinks or coffee, even though the day was really hot. It used to be a tour you would enjoy but not that much anymore.

“Well Worth It”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2012

A low-key eco-tour, probably best suited for small children and adults (or adult-like teens). Our guide, Carlos, was charming, very informative and exuded commitment to the mission of the place. While bioluminescence is the selling point, my favorite part of the tour was the visit to the lighthouse. Also enjoyed the walk on the boardwalk through the mangrove. The reserve is beautiful and very well-maintained.

Others have mentioned how hard it can be to find the Reserve. I echo the advice to follow signs for the El Conquistador Hotel and once you find it continue out on Route 987 away from town and toward the beach. In less than a mile, you will come to a "Y". Stay to the left (on the right you will end up on Route 9987) and continue until you see a public beach on the left. The gate for the Reserve is at the end of the beach.

Reservations by phone were easy. Our tour was in English. Not sure if that was by luck or all are. Overall, well worth it.

To experience this natural attraction by night on a moonless night is priceless!! Book your reservations in advance and read about the micro-organisms that will make you glow in the dark of the atlantic ocean waters!! Enjoy!!

“Educational and worth while.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2012

Very educational, not a thriller, but our children did enjoy it. It was a very good prerequisite for doing the bioluminescent bay tour later that night.
