We visited the Starfish Trelawny Beach Resort from March 26-April 2. For the low price that we paid, we were very happy with everything. If you are wanting to go for relaxation, no schedule or hassle and away from the crowds and noise of city life, this is the place. It's a 45 minute drive from Montego Bay and a little more to Ocho Rios & Dunn's River Falls on a beach area with no other resorts but for a condo type place up the beach about 3/4 mile. There was a market on one side of the resort if you were interested in crossing over. The people were friendly and not pushy. I did a lot of research ahead of time and knew that there are many things that we'd have to pay extra for--if you wished to do those things. It's NOT considered a full-inclusive resort for exactly that reason. This title would cost extra for everyone all around and if you're not wishing to do the extras, it's well worth your money. Extras to pay were for rock climbing, trapeze training, jet-skiing, babysitter, sumo wrestling and tours. We did none of these things as they didn't interest us. There are three restaurants that cost extra--a Japanese ($15 per person that we ate at as a first time experience and loved it), a pizza/pasta type place (didn't eat there), a fancy dress-code restaurant that some things weren't charged but a lobster meal was $22 per person (didn't eat there but heard both reactions). There was a grill at the beach bar for lunch and through the late afternoon where great cheeseburgers, fries, grilled cheese, hot dogs, etc. were served as well as at 2:30 a baked chicken and rice dish were available. At supper, you could also make reservations to eat near the beach with no extra cost. We ate most of our meals in the buffet which provided at least five different types of meats for supper, many hot sides, always wonderful breads, salads, fruits, cheese/meat and dessert selections. Breakfasts were great in the buffet with waffles, blended drinks, omelets or eggs to order as well as ready-to-eat e food selection. This was not our first all-inclusive place and the food/drinks/atmosphere/people here is tops in comparison to the Dominican Republic place we stayed at last year.Drinks were available in pre-mixed frozen machines as non-alcoholic to accommodate the kids and non-drinkers. There were also pop machines around. We had great luck with the beach bartenders. They were friendly and made us whatever mixed/frozen drink we asked for. We had dacquiries, margaritas, coladas, mudslides, hummingbirds, bloody mary's, etc. as well as beer. One recommendation is to BRING AN INSULATED MUG. They do not frown on this and it's less trips to the bar when you're beaching it.There were four nice pools with one adult waterslide and one kids waterslide. There were water pool tables (you may have had to pay for those), water volleyball and water boats for the kids. They had hot tubs in certain spots but they were not hot from what we heard. There were plenty of chairs near the pools as well as a few roofed areas with mattresses near the pool to keep out of the sun (you'd have to get out there plenty early however). The beach was beautiful, calm, clean and white when we got there but towards the end of our trip, a front came in and with it heavy rains. Much of the beach was washed out directly in front of the pool areas but when the tides switch again, it will all come back in. The watersports people were then working steady to clean up sand and seaweed. If you are a young person wishing to party till the wee hours of night in the disco, chances are it won't happen unless you have your whole crew. I love to dance and the activity people are more than willing to try and get people out but it just didn't happen. They had good music and the potential is there. Remember that you're in the country here.Evening entertainment consisted of locals and was pretty good most nights. In our week, there was a variety of entertainment of which all was good.Workers were all friendly to us. We ventured off of the property manestions to compare their lives with Americans. We did not feel threatened, however common sense is a must just as in any poverty area. We need to remember that we're in THEIR COUNTRY and a smile, thank you, compliment, talk and interest is just common courtesy. If a person does not wish to see poverty along the way, this is not the place, nor is any other under-developed country. This is their life and in order for them to survive and make money, their main jobs center around tourists. Our room was CLEAN and we had no problems. Our coffee pot, iron, safe, hairdryer and frig all worked. They do have casino slot machines and my husband did quite well. One kid won $2500 american while there. There were a number of times, however, that the the machines went off kilter and your money was stuck. When that happened, you told an attendant and they wrote your name down to pay out what you had coming when the slot lady came to the resort. Apparently there is only one person going between many resorts. They also have an exercise room--didn't use it as I was there to eat and drink. :-) It did look like a nice one. There was also an arcade room and pool tables in the lobby. My overall impression of the resort was great. I would recommend this place to my friends and family once I knew what their expectations were. Like I said, if you're hoping to party with young 20 year olds, head out to local clubs, shop in malls this is not the place--go to Cancun for that. If you're here to relax and be a BEACH BUM, this is a great place. It was beautiful vegetation, clean atmosphere and quiet. Good luck and have FUN--you'll be on VACATION!!
