I am just returned from Starfish with my husband and 2 year old daughter. It is a lovely place for families, in particular young children and preteens.
We were there during Spring Break and there were some college kids there but not many and only 1 night seemed to be on the wild side (a pj party, apparently...they were all pretty loud til 3AM that night...) Most of the kids were either 2-3 years old or young teenagers. Just a note for parents of teens who may be going: I did see that the bar staff served unlimited drinks to teens with Platinum bands, they don't have different underage colors in that category. There were many drunk 15-17 year olds running around unsupervised, to the point of staggering and belligerent. They also seemed to magically appear at night begging for a hit from strangers when they smelled pot anywhere (noticed that on late night walks past the pool to the beach.)
Anyway...notes on things not directly related to the hotel:
1) Definitely check out Luminous Lagoon, very cool attraction and good for families. You can arrange tours via the hotel or if you want to go more local and not be on a "booze cruise," ask on the beach for the Alligator Man (aka Jared, I think...) and he will set you up with a local guide in a small boat. He can hook you up with anything you want (coffee, honey, trips, food, etc..) and you usually get a gift of aloe leaves or a coconut out of the deal which is unique. You have to step outside the security boundary to arrange the deals but I never felt unsafe or pressured by any vendors. They will bargain but I tended not to after seeing how very poor the locals are, a few extra bucks is not that much to me but a may be an extra meal for them.
2) As mentioned many times, Leon can hook you up with just about anything that Alligator man can't. His lobster is very inexpensive, we got 4 for $30.
3) If you want a meal cooked by a real Rastafarian, look for Ja 5's restaurant behind Bamboo Village outside the resort gate to the left of the beach. He grows all his own vegetables and spices, all organic. Very good food and a sincere man. If you want lobster added to your veggies, he can arrange that also. Don't miss his soup, it's great.
Hotel Pros: Gorgeous and well maintained grounds, sparkling pools, tons of activities for everyone, awesome gym, friendly staff, wonderful spa services (ask for Joy) at cheap prices, clean and fun Kids Club, laundry room was helpful for those of us with messy kids. Recently renovated bathrooms in cottage. Tips were never solicited but graciously accepted.
Just ok: food...breakfast was my favorite, lunch and dinner not so much. Food often cold on buffet and sometimes redundant (three pastas and three curry dishes, for instance). Difficult to get reservations in other restaurants. (Casablanca no surcharge but menu items are charged, Munasan $$15 teppanyaki or $12 sushi, Giuseppe $12, Scotch Bonnett $5) Cottage layout is tight, no privacy from your kids in bunkbed next to your bed.
Hotel Cons: Not enough hangers, couple of cockroaches in cottage bathrooms at night, bunkbed would not be stable for anyone over 65# or so to climb up onto, cottages get all the noise of the night entertainment til 11PMish so plan to be up with your light sleeping child. Our cottage was the first one adjacent to the hotel, might be quieter down by the beach except for beach party nights. Stay away from "American" food like burgers, hot dogs, ketchup--truly awful and beef in burger doesn't look or taste like beef. Ancient tile floor in cottage could use a regrouting, lots of ground in dirt despite vigilant mopping by housekeepers. My key deactivated EVERY day, the staff insisted that I must be putting it on the tv or fridge but I was not. Not very helpful or apologetic there. Communication is not so good between departments. For instance if you need maintenance it's faster to look for a guy outside and ask for help then to call the front desk or guest relations. Our issue took 3 days...the connecting door between our cottage and next did not lock. Not a big deal when a nice family was next door but they left Sat and the band used the room as a changing area. The next morning we came back after breakfast to see that the connecting cottage exterior door was wide open, went into our room and the connector was open like someone had come in...anyone could get in from the open cottage door. I had called the desk 3 times to get repaired and nothing happened, found a guy outside and took care of it immediately.
We would go back on a family vacation but might get connecting rooms to have some privacy or the Presidential suite which I think is 2 rooms.
