“Lovely hotel, quiet area”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 4, 2012

Hotel great, with some minor issues so criticisms first:
Faulty electrics in one room when we arrived, however this got resolved after a couple of visits to reception.
Our rooms were over the bar and evening entertainment kept us awake on a couple of occasions.
Indoor pool not big enough for swimming - also sign said we must wear caps in the pool, however nobody at the hotel could provide these when we asked about them.
Bar staff hit and miss - some were very friendly and helpful, others seemed less enthusiatic about delivering good service to us.
TV only in Spanish apart from two English news channels.
Not much to do if it rains, especially for teenagers. Most local attractions had shut down for the season eg. Paintball, water park, hotel's own kids club.
No bikes available for hire from hotel (broken) although available from shop a few minutes walk away at reasonable hire cost.
Pool nice although a bit cold on days when we didn't have full sun from morning. Pool Bar openings not consistent with advertised times.
Now the positives:
Entire hotel very clean and attractive in general.
Dining room staff absolutely lovely, very hard working, efficient and friendly and keen to help.
Food really nice, plenty of it and good variety and dining room although busy never felt crowded at the counters. Dining always felt very leisurely and relaxed. We went all inclusive like many guests that week and the atmosphere was always very pleasant.
Fabulous beach was quiet which suited us for romantic strolls, beachcombing, paddling and watching local fisherfolk trawling the shallows. It did get busy on the day the sun shone all day. (we had very mixed weather during our stay).
Picturesque Ayamonte old town and Saturday morning market well worth a visit, taxi about 8 euros which worked out nearly as cheap as the hourly bus for four of us. All locals very friendly and no hard selling or ripping off tourists. Also very pleased and patient with our attempts at speaking Spanish and/or miming. Really nice. There was the usual market in the town square with local produce and souvenirs of quite good quality plus a large open market for local people where our 18yr old girl did very well for shoes, watch and sunglasses and I got a lovely pashmina all very cheaply priced.
Marina at Isla Cristina a pleasant hour's walk away, though quiet on the Friday (ghost town) presumably due to time of year. We liked the wooden boardwalks which led to the beach and one cafe still open for custom.
Overall we had a very good holiday, would recommend booking a bit earlier than mid october to make the most of the resort and amenities.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms above the bar as the entertainment kept us awake some nights.

Booked 5 days all inclusive to this fab resort -weather was lovely and didn't rain til the day we came home! Food and drinks fantastic with staff who couldn't do enough to help. Great hotel venue, long beach directly opposite. Nice surrounding area very flat and ideal for bike riding (6 euro) for 4 hours. Couldn't believe how quiet the area was though -financial crisis has really hit -more accommodation for rent/sale than ever!

Very pleased with this hotel...Not the place for everybody..Lovely hotel pool area, and beaches across the road..A regular service bus runs into Ayamonte, and went ther via the Marina area, and a l;ovely wee fishing village called Punta del Moral, which had nice little restaurants..Went half-board although there were many people on "all inclusive".For my wife and I this would be a bit too much, as going out for lunch to different places is part of the holiday experience.
The food was excellent, and plentiful.
Lots of Spanish and Portugese visitors at the weekend

Room Tip: We were fortunate to have a room facing the sea across the road. Most rooms seemed well located,but...

Hotel was good. went all inclusive . Sadly everywhere, not that there was much, was shut down. The entertainment in the hotel at night was bad so had to stick with it. We were at this hotel as jet 2 informed us 2wks before we left England that our own choice of hotel had been shut down. there fore we had no choice but to go with the flow! If the hotel was somewhere with at least a little to do would have been good. We won'nt be returning soley due to the area.

Room Tip: Overlooking the pool area are the better rooms.

We've just returned from a weeks all inclusive holiday to the Barcelo Isla Canela.
Having only a single previous AI experience before I was dubious. I needn't have been !!!
I always use Trip Advisor & take a view on the general feeling... You always get people who would never be happy.
I was very impressed....the food way plentiful & very varied. I like my fish & meat so wasn't disappointed.
I think the great thing is the hotel is frequented by lots of Spanish who won't put up with Chips n Burgers. This was reflected in the fact that although a lot of people were AI it wasn't abused. You always get people half board who can't help but get there bread, cheese & sliced meats for their lunch which is a shame.
There's very little that isn't included on AI. As mentioned before on here all but the cocktail of the day which is free are charged at 50% which wasn't a problem as everything else we fancied was free.
It's true there's not a lot to do outside of the hotel but the facilities are good & the entertainment team try hard. We went with some friends & our two young (7 & 3) children & we all loved it. Even talking about a cheeky late season week next year.
The rooms are clean & tidy & very well looked after whilst you are there.
Large outdoor pool with plenty of loungers in well established gardens. Indoor pool is smaller than it looks on the pics but adequate unless you are a seriously avid distance swimmer..... It's a fun pool. The jacuzzi was good but never found the sauna.
The beach was literally over the road. Nice sand but a bit late in the season n windy. If you are into kite surfing its a Mecca.

To summarise, I like good food as I'm fortunate to eat very well at home & won't put up with crap on holiday you wont be disappointed. As we weren't looking for a full on action packed holiday but just a cheeky late season trip away it ticked all the boxes. If I don't go here again we will look at another in the chain as if this is how they run hotels it gets my vote.

Congratulations to the management & staff at Barcelo Isla Canela !!!

Stayed all inclusive 30 Sept to 14 Oct. Whole area very peaceful and quiet. Hotel run very efficiently, staff polite and friendly. Very large grounds and gardens, well maintained, with plenty of sun beds for everyone. Would recommend to anyone looking for a peaceful holiday away from it all. Excellent sandy beach, which goes on for miles. Shame about the British on half board, stuffing their handbags with whatever food they could cram in there, very embarrassing if you were British.

lovely hotel and gardens pool lovely too, the food was excellent and always hot mostly cooked in front of you would certainly go again. the hotel is right opposite the fabulous beach, a real expanse of golden sands with beach shacks serving excellent food, the nearby town of ayomonte is well worth a visit, only 1 euro on the local bus.
