We booked this hotel by email at a special rate of €110 per night intending to stay for 5 nights and were given a room in the 'new' wing. However we went into the room it was shoddy and dirty, the curtains were hanging off their hooks and there was no nets or voiles to give you any privacy from the houses opposite. There was an open wardrobe which had only 4 coat hangers, (too bad if you intended to unpack your clothes), we later asked at reception if they could give us a few more coat hangers but they were unable to do so. The bathroom was not much better with a dirty stained shower curtain along with an equally stained rubber bath mat which we threw underneath the sink, the room was very basic and ceratinly not worth €110 per night. As we arrived in the evening we had a meal in the bar which boasted an 'a la carte' menu, sadly the only thing 'a la carte' about it was the prices, most good pubs could provide such meals - steak and chips, chicken curry, scampi etc far cheaper than the prices in the Abbeyleix Manor bar.
The next morning we decided to have breakfast while debating wether or not to complain about our room and check out, breakfast convinced us to do so!, the breakfast room was set up in the bar room with only 2 small tables with cereals in plastic containers, some which were missing their lids along with a small bowl of fruit and juices, we had a mediocre breakfast after which we asked to see the manager, she was unavalible so we told the receptionist we were checking out as the hotel was not up to our standard or as advertised on their website plus the fact they neglected to mention the renovation works going on around the hotel, the receptionist went off to see the manager who gave us €20 discount, we checked out and headed off to Kilkenny where we got a far better hotel, The Kilkenny Inn at €90 per night, do yoursleves a favour, bypass Abbeyleix and carry onto Kilkenny
