“A wonderful find”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2008

Les Granges Hautes is one of those wonderful "finds" that one comes across every now and then when wandering around rural areas of France. It has everything a top Bed and Breakfast should have...a glorious old Perigordian home set in fabulous gardens, with rooms charmingly and individually decorated, most opening directly onto the gardens.

Beatrice and Jean Yves are warm and delightful hosts, always ready to answer questions about the area, where to eat, where to shop, etc. (try the fabulous Meynardie restaurant just up the road).

Breakfast is served in the ancient dining room of the house and is typically French, with freshly baked croissants and rolls, cooked by Jean Yves, and accompanied by a selection of tasty jams.

The superb town of Sarlat is just 25 minutes away and is full of great restaurants scattered around in the maze of little cobbled streets and lanes. This is one of our favourite towns in all of France, as Les Granges Hautes is one of our favourite B and B's.

We first stayed at Les Granges Hautes several years ago and have since returned and will continue to do so every time we go to France.

Kaylee and I stayed here at Granges Hautes for three nights and would have stayed longer if Jean-Yves & Béatrice had had the room vacant.

The accommodation and grounds are beautiful and well cared for, breakfast is great and all with a relaxing pool to come back to at the end of any busy day. The accommodation is very central to everything in the Perigord Noir.

The area around is great for walking, cycling, eating or just relaxing, beautiful towns and scenery (but we got chateaud out....!! you can only take so many chateau)

To top it off Jean-Yves and Beatrice are very friendly and hospitable....highly recommended.

Let me start by saying this Chambre d'hotes is really beautiful: the gardens are lovely, the pool scene is great, the main house is charming, and so are the rooms.
But...
1) The room
It is smaller than what I expected. The courtains don't make it dark in the morning. We hear everything that happens outside the room. There is no TV or minibar.
2) The breakfast
The breakfast is a little on the poor side. The croissants and pains au chocolat were a bit stale. At 8 euros per person (which is Paris price) I sure expected more.
3) The owners
I think they lack the interest in their guests that is so usual in chambre d'hotes. They didn't make any kind of conversation, didn't try to be helpful without being asked. The lady didn't even introduce herself to us.
4) The location
Close enough to Sarlat. Since we had previously stayed at Le Relais des 5 Chateaux, which is south of Sarlat, we had already visited the lovely cities which are farther away from Les Granges Hautes (Domme, La Roque Gageac and Domme). If this was our only point of stay in the region, I think I wouldn't have liked the location.
5) The price
This chambre d'hotes costed 80 euros per night (not including breakfast - so it was 96 euros total), which is the most we payed our entire trip to the countryside of France. It certainly was the worst value for money, specially if you consider the little time you'll spend inside a hotel during your stay in the Perigord.

This is a very well-situated, comfortable and attentively-run stone farmhouse near Sarlat and other interesting destinations such as Saint-Genies, St.-Amand de Coly, Montignac and about a one-hour or so drive from St-Cirq-Lapopie and Figeac. The Lascaux Caves are a short drive away as is La Roche de Saint-Christophe.

Our room, "Virginie", was small but adequate with a good-size bathroom (shower, tub and vanity with a huge sink), large wardrobe, chest of drawers, small desk. Maid service was daily; breakfast served in the charming dining room consisted of fresh orange juice, croissants, rolls, muffins, wonderful jams, cheese, and coffee. Large fireplace + TV are in the same room and available in the evening. WiFi works well in the dining room and garden. Beautifully landscaped grounds. Pool and chaises.

Beatrice and Jean-Yves went out of their way to make sure we were warm enough at night, given that the temp really dropped: they provided a space heater, which did the trick; extra blankets and pillows. When the power went out, we were given 2 small lamps with votive candles.

Downsides: the bedspread was not clean; there were no regular candles and lamps to throw more light in the room, no matches for power outages which we were told happen every year during thunderstorms; one window of our room backed onto a covered area containing a table and chairs and guests who chose to sit there talked loudly much of the afternoon until about 8 p.m. often while we were trying to rest, although never after 10 p.m.

Apart from the above downsides, which can be easily remedied, this is truly a gem of a place to stay and to relax. The setting is gorgeous and it is not out of the way, with many fascinating destinations within easy reach.

Les Granges Hautes really captures the best of Dordogne. We spent 4 nights in July 2006 and had the best time. Stayed in the smallest room available "Le Pigeonnier", nice and cosy. The Fauste couple was warm and accomodating. Even though the hotel does not have a restaurant, they arrange dinners for the guest where you just have to sign up in advance. Breakfast was great with wonderful homemade jams, and when the weather allowed served in the garden. Located fairly close to Sarlat, but you will need a car to get around. A very charming, very Frech hotel with good value for money!
