“Peaceful, beautiful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2013

This was the one splurge of our trip and what a worthwhile splurge. The restaurant has delicious food, much of it grown on their very own farm. The staff is friendly. There are many thing to do including a small coffee museum, orchid garden, tours of the farm and coffee plantation, visiting the arts and crafts shop, hiking, explore the chapel, try to spot monkeys (you can hear them), enjoy the beautiful views. We were lucky enough to meet the owners who are very passionate about the eco friendly aspect of the lodge as well as the well being of their staff. We got a cabin which was clean, quiet, comfortable, and cute. At night we got to sit out on the porch in rocking chairs (made at the lodge) and watch the curious frogs come check us out. I would definitely come back here and definitely recommend it to anyone.

Room Tip: We had a cabin, which was very nice.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Selva Negra and would recommend to others - but it isn't a cheap option - the reasons for this are the food being environmentally sensitively produced etc. and the fact that if, as my husband and I did, you don't leave the site during your stay, you are at the mercy of the hotel bar and restaurant.
The cabana was delightful and we were woken two mornings by howler monkeys directly overhead! Clean, spacious and very comfortable.
The staff were very helpful and friendly, and some quite knowledgeable about the wildlife. We didn't go on any of the tours, preferring to do the walks on our own, which were fabulous - especially for howler monkeys! We did, however, go on a ride around the plantation on horseback with Cuba(?) and he was just great, judging, as he did, our riding abilities (we met a family who were inexperienced and they walked around, as opposed to a few trots and canters) - the horses were well looked after too - unlike the poor nags you see in Granada!
Probably the best place to actually see any birds (as opposed to just hearing them - yes, I am talking to you, bell bird!) is to sit at the restaurant with a beer and your binoculars!
The food was good, but I'm afraid we were very disappointed by the coffee, considering it is a coffee plantation. As a direct result of what we were served in the restaurant, we decided not to buy and beans.

Thanks for coming to stay with us at Selva Negra and for also taking your time to write a review. I am glad to hear that your really enjoyed your stay with us. Cuba is an excellent guide for people on horseback and has years of experience taking all sorts of different guests all over our farm, from very young children being held on by an adult to experienced riders. Taking a horseback ride down through the farm is a great way to see a lot of our estate. I also appreciate that you noticed that we do indeed take good care of all of our animals, including our horses. As for the wildlife I am glad that our monkeys greeted you properly during your stay, they are often a highlight of a trip. The bellbird is one of the easiest birds to hear due to its very loud call but it is one of the more difficult birds to see. The call that the bellbird makes actually sounds like it is coming from a slightly different spot than where the bird is. So despite it being "right there in front of you" often you can not find it. Our nature guides have a lot of experience in spotting it and can almost always locate it. I do agree that a beer and binoculars from the restaurant is a pretty good way to spend time birding.

I am sorry to hear that you were disappointed with the quality of our coffee. As a coffee plantation and a restaurant this is something that should not happen, we are trying to get better consistency. There are quite a few variables in the process from the beans picked, the processing, the roasting process, the brewing of the coffee and ultimately the serving. We are trying to improve in every area to ensure consistency in the coffee that we serve. As in everything that we do, we are striving to get better and we will improve in this area as well. Our beans are internationally recognized for their quality and sustainability, we're strive to complete the cycle by serving high quality coffee to our guests as well.

My husband and I and our 9 year old daughter stayed two nights at Selva Negra and really enjoyed our stay. While the accommodations are not luxurious (the cabins are damp and a little dark) you are in the cloud forest so it wasn't a big surprise. We were a little disappointed that our cabin overlooked the large building for conferences/receptions but we were very pleased that the chapel was just across the road and we could hear howler monkeys throughout the day in the trees above it. The access to the hiking trails was fantastic and we spent about 13 hours over the course of 2 days hiking and we saw monkeys on every hike and birds and other wildlife. The restaurant was pretty good - it had a nice variety of meals including vegetarian which we liked. The service was average, which we expected, and the quality was good. A little pricey but overall, very pleasant. We took advantage of a night hike with one of their guides but we did not tour the farm or coffee plantation. We would definitely recommend a stay at Selva Negra.

I am glad to hear that your experience at Selva Negra was enjoyable. While there are other cabins on the property that may have a better view from the front, the cabin that you stayed in is often requested because of its proximity to the mountain. All of our cabins are tucked into the natural surroundings but those three cabins are backed right up to our private nature reserve and are the ones that the howler monkeys visit the most often. So I am very glad that they paid you a visit while you were staying there. We have several different lodging options with prices for different budgets, so guests that are staying with us should be sure to ask questions about the various options at check-in to ensure that their selection meets their expectations.

I am also happy to hear that you really enjoyed our hiking trails. As a parent of children about your daughter's age I am very happy to hear that she enjoyed her stay and got to experience some of our natural wonders. We have recently expanded our vegetarian options of our menu so hopefully they were to your liking. Our sustainable farm is a big part of who we are and what we believe in, so I would recommend taking a tour of our farm should we have the pleasure of hosting you again in the future.

Thanks for taking some of your time to provide us with your feedback.

This place is great for trails and the rooms are reasonably priced. The service on the other hand blows my mind. I can't get over how you can be in the business this long and have such horrendous service. The staff was so rude and the food really flavorless and taste nothing like typical good in Nicaragua.

One of my biggest complaints would have to be the lack of coffee. Your at a coffee plantation and you can't get coffee until after 715 am. Prices for food are so silly it's laughable. Not worth it!!!..but I guess when your staying there you don't have a choice an they know that. Bring lots of snacks and fruit. Sabeco is on your way up and they have fresh fruits and vegetables...your going to need them.

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback. All feedback is important and areas where we failed to meet your expectations are important to hear. I am glad to hear that you enjoyed walking around our many trails and enjoyed your stay in our rooms. I am surprised that you found our food to be lacking in flavor. The majority of our guests compliment our food and say that it is very tasty and delicious. Now regarding the prices of our food that is one item that I think some explanation will help. Most of the food served in our restaurant is grown or raised right here on our property using only organic methods. The result is food that is better for the environment and is food that you should feel proud of the way that it was grown and prepared. This does mean that we are not able to price shop for the most inexpensive, less sustainably grown ingredients. However, the result is a dish that is not only tasty but also good for the environment and good for you as well. From the eggs in your breakfast, the meat of our signature hamburgers, to the chicken and barbecue sauce of your dinner you can enjoy a meal at Selva Negra knowing that your meal only had to travel uphill.

We have put some thought into how to provide coffee to our guests before the lodge opens at 7am but so far have not been able to figure out a solution that will work for us and our guests. We will be discussing this at our next meeting and will strive to find a good solution for our guests that are early risers.

We enjoyed our one night stay here. We stayed in a nice room (by Nicaraguan standards) with a lovely view of the lake. The rooms were clean. There was no air conditioning but it was not necessary as the evenings were cool (bring a jacket). This was a great respite from the heat and humidity of some of the other places we visited. Come for the beauty and the serenity and the trails, not the nightlife. The place closes down fairly promptly at 9pm. The coffee tour was intersting and it is amazing how well they use all the resources available to them. The hiking trails up into the mountains were amazing and shouldn't be missed. The food in the restaurant was wonderful and the staff were friendly and accomodating. We heard many compliments on the coffee and the beef.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a lake view.

Lorie and I have visited Selva Negra twice during the last five years- once for five days and again last December for an overnight. We rented a unique and ecologically-oriented little cabin tucked into the forested grounds and awoke to an unforgettable "jungle morning." Waking behind a wall of glass, snug in a comfortable bed - looking out into the forest as the fog burns off - listening to the howler monkeys and a variety of bird songs, unforgettable.. The food is wholesome and well prepared. The coffee plantation offers a close-up of this remarkable industry - the entire property is driven by sustainability and their organic food is very fairly priced as well. The hiking trails offer a relatively safe and contained cloud forest experience. On the first visit I was in great shape and we hiked the trails and even toured the plantation on horseback. I was nursing an injury during the second visit, but there were trails into the forest that were navigable enough for me to enjoy a jungle setting without risking additional injury. Oh, one more thing, we think its great that we can order a whiskey and share a good cigar while enjoying the wonderful service of their outdoor dining area. I was so grateful that I smoked a cigar on both evenings - not one complaint either - possibly I was in paradise?

Room Tip: Rent a cabin back by the Chapel!

Wonderful, beautiful place, you will not regret going there. Loved it and would love to go there again :) If you're a runner like I am, there are so many trails in the forest where you can have a blast for hours.
