“Good value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2013

Located in the center of town (2 blocks away from the parque central) , this hostel is very well organized : english speaking receptionist, night porter, 2 ladies to clean and prepare breakfast. The room was good and the shower had warm water. The breakfast was included in our price (30 dollars). There is a choice of Nica desayuno (eggs + gallo pinto) or fruit with muesli and yoghurt : both plates are excellent and prepared with love.

Room Tip: There were building a new house in the back so check first in you are planning to hang around during...

I and my Nicaraguan spouse have traveled extensively throughout Central America. One of our favorite stop is Matagalpa, Nicaragua, where the weather is fantastic year around and the city is friendly and easy to access services Unfortunately, many of the budget to moderate hotels are neither clean nor safe. One of the exceptions, is La Buen Onda.....clean,,,,safe.....comfortable...the breakfast there is always good....and reasonably priced.

Room Tip: Always inspect any room in Central America before paying

Good location, friendly staff, great breakfast! The location is just two blocks from the cathedral. It is within walking distance of most major attractions. The staff is very helpful. There are many restaurants nearby, and the staff will make recommendations for you. A local Nicaraguan can arrange tours for you both in the city and in outlying areas. He has an information notebook in the lobby.

Room Tip: They only have one private room, and the rest are shared dorms. We had a reservation for the private...

Have stayed at Buena Onda for weeks at a time. Their private rooms (they only have two) are a good size and have plenty of windows for light and ventilation. Their breakfast is fantastic and if you stay in the private rooms a number of different options are included. The owner is friendly and the staff is professional and knows plenty about the town and the area. I have stayed at three other hotels in Matagalpa and Buena Onda offers the best value for the money. My only hesitation in giving it five stars is that the place occasionally fills up with backpackers/Peace Corps volunteers/missionaries, which takes away from the experience.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 26, 2012

Stayed for a week and had a wonderful experience. I had a private room at the top of the stairs with a huge bed and room. Very simple but clean, huge, comfortable and VERY near the center of everything downtown. BUT. It is not noisy. The staff are great and the food is good. It is a great, safe place to start off your visit to Matagalpa at a VERY affordable price.

Room Tip: At my age I do not like sharing my sleeping place anymore. The privates rooms are a fantastic value...

I stayed a couple nights in La Buena Onda. The location is ideal, only two blocks from the cathedral in the heart of the city. I had a dorm room for $8, the room was simple, clean, and comfortable.

Staff were always friendly and helpful. I tried the yoghurt, granola and fruit breakfast for $4. It was served in a huge bowl - delicious and enough to fill up my empty stomach. There is free coffee, book exchange, and helpful advice. Wireless internet only worked some of the time, but was free. Also a very fat and friendly pet rabbit that roams around.

Nice balcony to watch the sun set over the hills too.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2012 via mobile

I travels to Matagalpa with my parents, we came there after we checked some reviews that recommends this hotel, especially the rooms with the balcony. Since we were three people they sugestted the room for three, but because we wanted the balcony they kindly added second bed to the room. The rooms are not big, but very cleen and nice. The view of the sunrise in the morning from the balcony was amazing.
Also, the stuff is very nice, the location is great ( only few minutes of walk from the center), and the breakfast also was very good.
I have to say that the price ( 10$ for a person) is more then fair.

Conclusion: highly recommended
