“Pretty but...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 29, 2012

Derek's Place was recommended to us by a friend. As far as location it is a lovely, rustic place. The grounds and huts were very pretty. While we were there it was fairly breezy (end of Feb) so the huts were cool and shady and we didn't miss a fan.

There were a couple of issues however. First of all, without a kitchen and a good 20 minute walk from the restaurants you don't have much freedom for food. The food Derek and his wife prepared was good but you had to eat it at the times they served it, you also had to share it with several other hungry guests. There was a VERY LONG stretch in between breakfast lunch and dinner. I was always starving. Also the food was just way way too expensive for people staying there relying on it. There was nowhere for guests to store food and drinks (unless you want to pay to use their fridge which is ridiculous) so you had to BUY everything from Derek and Ana and it is NOT cheap including glasses and lemons! Furthermore the owners and the staff all seemed annoyed any time you asked them for anything even things you were buying! I did not feel welcome there at all. I dreaded asking for anything. I felt like my whole vacation had to revolve around the life the owners, if they were busy and no around tough luck! The SCUBA instructor seemed nice though.

Also be prepared if you want to pay your balance while there that they demanded cash as there is not an ATM on the island and it was more convenient for them. This was a problem as we had to spend an entire day of our vacation taking a crappy panga ride to and from Big Corn Island to get them $100s of dollars in cash because they didn't want to go themselves.

All in all we spent as much time away from where we were staying as possible as the rest of the island was far friendlier. There is not a very nice beach in front of the place as it's very rocky. Walking down the beach a bit further places like Peace and Ensuenos looked much nicer and were flanking the nicer bits of beach with reefs right out front.

This is a unique place to spend you vacation, if you want to relax, this is the place, also if you want to have an adventurous vacation this is the place too, you can have really nice hikes, of course great scuba with the best price in the whole world!! Catch your own fish or just go for a boat ride. It is also excellent if you go with kids, they will be feeling the freedom of a safe and fun place with open and grassy areas close to the beach, The food is reallyyyyy good and often cooked by the owners themselves!!!!! The owners reside there almost year around, so the quality of hospitality goes way up. Remember you are in a small carribean island, so relax there!!!!. If you have back problems, you have to know that in order to get there you have to get on a boat, so you want to sit in the back (never in the front, there's nothing to see but a lot to regret!) and if you can bring a towel to sit on (or something similar like a t-shirt).

We stumbled across this place after a long walk, we just had to stay. We booked in for 5 nights and don't regret a moment. The bungalow was raised, so kept the bugs away an a lovely plus of having a great breeze. We slept in comfort a double bed each and we had our own bathroom which was quirky and unique in it's own way. The homemade products supplied were a great change. The beach was only steps away and very private. A very relaxing trip and the family with their many pets made the experience one to remember! Definitely recommend the bottle house!

Room Tip: Bottle House was amazing!

Although Derek's Place does not seem overpriced at first, once you get there, you slowly realize that you are expected to pay for everything, and I do mean EVERYThing, at all moments. Coffee and tea- a dollar a cup, etc. After staying in many great places all over Nicaragua, we found that Derek's did not give the impression of hospitality or warmth, something that becomes very important if you are staying on the remote side of the island for very long. Since it is at least a 20 minute walk from other dining options, including breakfast or coffee, this becomes incredibly irksome. On the first night they were quite gracious, but we soon realized that they cooled off conisderably if we we were not eating every meal (and paying for them) there. There is a small, rocky, but pretty beach there, and if you are going diving it might be worth it to stay here- but then again, maybe not. I liked the treehouse, the wind was persistent and intense but kept the bugs away, and the dive instructors were great, but the accommodations and hospitality are lacking. When you stay at Derek's you are staying with a family, unfortunately we ( and several other guests) felt less like it was a welcoming family and more like we were funding their life and overstaying our welcome. Oh well, Casa Iguana next time...

We recently did 4 dives with the "Little Dive Shack by the Sea" at Derek's place and partook of 3 family style meals. Highlights included spotting multiple lionfish & spotted Drums, as well as a turtle and an octopus. The location is a bit of a hike from town, but rather idyllic in its seclusion and construction out of natural materials.

I spent a night with my family there. Two cabins, 5 adults. Derek and Anna are warm people that treat you like their own family. We had a wonderful full moon and a permanent breeze coming from the ocean. I will return to spend at least a whole week to enjoy almost untouched caribbean beaches, and food, and diving, and swimming. By the way... try the hand made and hand bottled aromatized soaps and coconut oil Anna prepares by herself...
I am a nicaraguan living in Managua that enjoys to discover it´s own country´s places with international tourist´s eyes... I recommend Derek´s Place

I should have done this review ages ago....but somehow never did...

Anyways...to make up for it.

Just some advice to would be Derek’s Placers...

Be realistic in your expectations, this is NOT a luxury resort. If you like to be pampered and fussed over this is NOT the place for you. If you can survive on basics in a beautiful setting then you will thrive here.

It’s what it is...beautiful tranquil and a slice of paradise. It is also a business; nothing is free in life, don’t expect to get food/drinks gratis, you wouldn’t anywhere else so why expect that there?

Derek, Anna and their children are lovely, the food is very good and the atmosphere relaxing.

The snorkelling just off the beach is fantastic, I saw turtles, numerous sea slugs, starfish, countless shoals of fish....in fact every time I dived I saw something new (which was every day of the 12 days I stayed).

Do expect to have to walk to the communal toilets (unless you book one of the bigger cabanas), do expect to shower using a tub filled from a spring, do expect to use a mosquito net to protect yourself at night....oh...and surprisingly enough its hot, damn hot at night.

Derek’s place is out of the way on an island that in itself is out of the way.

The walk into town is a about 30-40 minutes (torch and spare ABSOLUTELY essential at night).

If you seek peace you will find it here.

Room Tip: Torch essential, as is mosquito repellent...actually this is the tropics come prepared for it!
