Casa Iguana is probably the best place to stay on Little Corn Island in that they have a huge lot of land that makes you feel extremely comfortable roaming about and a part of. It's a pleasant walk to the other side of the island where you can get other meals etc. I liked that it was on the oppposite side of the more busy mainstream side of the island..so in essence you could get the best of both worlds - peaceful and quiet and beachy one side, more busy and filled with locals and roamers on the other.
It's a very rustic place, so try not to have high expectations here - there is no AC, though the lovely breeze from the ocean almost always guarantees a pleasant stay. It also keeps nasty mosquitos away. You have to make sure your windows are open at night to keep the airflow at night or else you will be in stifling heat. We stayed at the Grand Casita, which I'd recommend for anyone not enjoying particularly cramped spaces. The hammocks are a blessing and it was so easy to fall asleep to the sound of the ocean.
The steps to the beach are closest to this casita, and it was nice to wander there whenever we wanted. The shower is outside, which is ok, except this means you need to shower only when the sun is up or else you can't see anything! And even though it's hot out, the ice cold water is still very hard to adapt to and welcome when it's timeto freshen up.
Food was very good each meal, loved the trust system if you had to help yourself to a beer if no one was at the communal area.
Some issues I had....though we were aware we had no 'hot' water for showering per se, we were told that our manager would release the water into a holding tank onto the roof which the sun would heat the water up so we in essence could have warm water. That would have been great had he actually done it... we asked about 3 times before he finally did it..nice way to treat new guests staying at the grand casita, we had to chase him down because we wanted to shower comfortably. I mean, we did pay extra for some of the nicer amenities of the Lodge. The ladies working there were very pleasant and nice. Most the of the employees that work there are there for internships or programs. They are young and can tend to be cliquee and stick to themselves, I understand they form close bonds but we are guests and it can be off-putting. Interestingly enough, we loved the experience of Little Corn Island that we decided to extend our stay one night. We asked if we could use their phone to notify our hotel in Big Corn that we won't be arriving until the following day, however the same manager/host that took forever to help us with the warm water said it's only for Casa Iguana use.. dude I wasn't asking to call a friend in the States, I wanted to give you more business by extending a night and just wanted to give our other hotel the courtesy of letting them know we cut a night out! To add insult to injury, 2 days later the same guy allowed some other guest to use the phone! I don't know why we were treated like that, we were never rude or high maintenance people. Anyway, we got a regular casita for our final night since the grand casita was taken, and it was a big difference to us...felt cramped and one of our windows wouldn't open, so we couldn't facilitate airflow at night, and it became unbearably uncomfortable and hot, took forever to essentially pass out and sleep. We didn't even bother to ask our manager to help fix the windows, as you can guess why.
What made Little Corn especially dear to us is probably b/c we got certified for scuba diving there. The waters were gorgeous for that experience and I love love loved my instructor, Josh. The diving school is associated with Casa Iguana so they come over for dinner. They are fun and great to work with. They do like to party after everyone sleeps, and I think that's fine and warranted given there isn't much to do there. Again, it probably contributes the cliquee feeling you get if you're at dinner with them. I tried to chat with one guy from South Africa about Scuba diving and his home country, and he just wasn't that interested, he preferred joking with the fellows he knew and so I gave up. I would have enjoyed having some cameraderie while there, since we were similar in age...oh well.
Anyway, Casa Iguana is probably the most comfortable accommodation but be aware that the staff is rarely local, you will feel like you're in a gringo village, but this can be a good thing depending on who you are. And yes I do believe it's too much money given what you get and where you are. It's a decent trade off and yes I would go back again. If you want a true Island experience, there are other places to get that feel.
We felt completely safe on the entire island, wandered a little too far at one point, which made us nervous, but were stil fine, even after a half naked drunken local guy decided to walk with us and talk for 30 minutes. There are some awesome places to eat there too if you don't wish to dine at Casa Iguana, so take advantage of that option (the Cuban restaurant is absolutely the best I've ever eaten to this date - please check it out!).
As a note, we went to Big Corn Island after, and I have to say I didn't like it at all. Had to rent a golf cart to get around, and people there seemed wayyyy less friendly than Little Corn Island. The beaches are more beautiful, but if I could change my plans, I would have stayed in Little Corn the entire time.
