“Fantastic place: cannot recommend it highly enough”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 19, 2008

We stayed at Castlereagh for two nights in March and it was the most magical experience of our honeymoon. The service was fantastic, the food delicious and the gardens beautiful. It really was like stepping back in time: high tea on the verrandah, pre-dinner drinks in one of the two sitting rooms, four course meals with excellent argentinian wine and then port. Our room, Tate, had a four poster bed and wonderful views over the garden and down to the lake. You even get a great view from the claw foot bath! The stay includes a fascinating tour of a local tea factory and on the way back we got the chance to visit both Norwood (huge pool) and Summerville (floor to ceiling picture windows looking out over the terraced garden over the lake) which are equally gorgeous bungalows, although they are all different. We would love to go back.

This is how small hotels should be; immaculate service, wonderful position, very good food, lovely rooms, well fitted, really good linen, vg pillows (always a good sign). Guests are treated as though they own the place and you quickly slip into the role of the colonial tea planters guests; the staff are always available, always helpful, always happy and there are plenty of them; each bungalow (the accomodation is refurbished tea planters bungalows, as far removed from the common British bungalow as you can get) has 5 rooms, but has a chef, a manager, waiting staff, houseboys, gardeners and gateman. The chef comes to discuss your meal requirements for the day at breakfast, lunch and tea as well as dinner is provided, and lunch can be a beautifully prepared packed lunch if you are walking through the tea estates, which is the great pleasure. In February, days are hot and nights are cool, but dinner is usually served outside if you like (or in the dining room if you don't). The only downside is outside their control - getting there by car is a nightmare, but in normal circumstances this should not matter because the Sri Lankan air taxi service runns from Colombo, Kandy and elsewhere and lands on the Castlereagh lake, which three on the bungalows overlook. If you are going to sri Lanka, don't miss this place.

We stayed 2 nights at Norwood (one of 4 houses operated by Tea Trails). Absolute luxury, great food, wonderful (discrete) service, nothing ever a problem. Sitting on the terrace overlooking tea terraces - just magic. Given the altitude you beat the heat and humidity of the coast. The staff were very helpful in giving advice about walks and organising a tour through a nearby tea plantation. It transported you back in time - to the era of the colonial tea plantation owner. A very special experience.

  • Liked — The sheer luxury of the experience - not cheap - but real value for money
  • Disliked — Its a good 3 hour journey from Kandy over some windy roads - views great but if you get carsick.....

We stayed in Tientsin Bungalow for one night on our way through the tea trails and what a wonderful night it was. We had a warm welcome from Damien the manager and were made to feel completely relaxed and at home, highly recommended.
