“One of the best...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 2, 2014

We were there in Dec 2013 and it's one of the best hotels to stay with excellent service. The staff were very friendly and the food were five star quality. All rooms have beutiful views of the Indian ocean and are very clean and spaces. Bathrooms were equipped with modern fittings to suit foriegn standards. Recommended for anyone who loves to relax and unwind with great Ocean Views

The rooms in this hotel are very spacious and comfortable with a bedroom area and separate sitting area with magnificent views of the ocean both from the room itself and from the large balcony.
The staff were excellent. The man at the pool was particularly helpful bring new towels after every swim and the man in the gym went to get a water bottle and opened it each time a break from exercising occurred. The reception staff organized an excellent safari at less cost than we would otherwise have paid.
The restaurant staff were very attentive. The freshly prepared breakfasts were very good and the choice of food at dinner was wider than in some other hotels with some real Sri Lankan dishes.
We stayed an extra two nights because it was so good.

Room Tip: Views from upper floor even better than from the lower floor.

Visited with family on feb 14th of 2014.
Rates are high.the service is the worse we got an sri lanka.
Rooms are anyway of good quality with spacious and queen size beds.
Tub and hot water available with quality finished bathroom and interior.
The view from the balcony is magnificiant, facing the deep blue see.

Foods were horrible and service was poor.specially for the price you pay.we didnt have buffet for any meal.and service boys just always not nearby when you are at dining room.had to wait for several munites for the next dish.always.

Nice location and comfortable rooms.
Could have beeen a nice resort with proper management.

Everything let down by the poor quality staff and less professional management.they need to revise their staff very soon.

In summary
Great location, scenary, comfortable modern spacious rooms, horrible staff and worse foods.stupid management.

Newly opened luxuary hotel is just nereby and i highly suspect that the management of LAYA has taken bribes from them to let this place down and close.unless this cant be that bad.

I mean, thats the only explanation that i can assume for the poor quality service and foods.

We stayed at Laya Safari for 3 nights, having also considered Jetwing Yala Hotel and Cinnamon Wild Yala. We were pleased with our decision. Our primary criterion was hotel quality and convenience for Yala. The hotel is likely to be quiet, even during high occupancy as there are only 10 living blocks, each with ground and first floor accommodation (20 bookable rooms). The hotel has been open about 18 months and was built by the army. We learned that this was to occupy the army after the end of the civil war, use their engineering skills and develop tourism at lower costs. Whilst Jetwing and Cinnamon are fed by major tour operators, Laya is not and so I would regard this hotel as likely to be suitable for those seeking a quieter environment. The design is striking and has hints of Indonesian architecture.
Our room (207) was close enough to pick-up WiFi from the main reception and we preferred the first floor option rather than the ground floor. All first floor rooms have a mezzanine floor which could sleep 2 others when converted to a family room. I don't think it would be practical with young children however. The room was excellent with both ensuite bath & shower. The sitting area was stepped down from the bedroom and had a great view over the hotel grounds and ocean. TV was fed by satellite.
It did not seem to me that swimming would be possible in the sea. A red flag flew throughout our stay as there was strong surf, surge and a steeply shelving beach. However, the infinity pool more than compensated and the jacuzzi provided added variety.
All the staff were helpful, attentive and friendly. The hotel is located just 15 minutes from Yala Park entrance. We had a 5am pickup for an all day safari and had a packed breakfast, ordered the night before. We enjoyed a good choice of food at the buffet breakfast but preferred to eat A La Carte in the evening. A pre dinner cocktail just set the scene!

Rooms nicely designed with a Queen size bed and large sitting area with divan and satellite TV. Meals - very little choice on set menu if you book HB or FB so get BB for a wider choice. Staff friendly and helpful. Qualityand Price quite reasonable compared to other hotels in the area. On the negative side no umbrellas or torches are provided so getting to restaurant when it rains is a chore and power failures regular

Room Tip: Get a room nearer the reception area as you have to walk along uncovered walkway for meals

On arrival, this place looked amazing, the rooms overlook the beach/sea, the pool and hot tub are beautiful, however.....the staff are trying very hard to please, some are very young and need a little more training and just seemed to miss the standard of other places we have visited and stayed at.
The concerning thing, there is a new Jetwing hotel, which has just opened, and it is a stones throw away, and well presented with very attentive staff.
The Laya has lovely accommodation, with a little more training for the staff in the restaurant area, it could be exceptional.
