“Food was out of this world”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2013

We are a family of 2 adults and 2 children. We stayed at Max Wadiya for a week, where we had the place to ourselves for most of it, and it was such a relaxing week. We lazed in the garden/ by the pool and on the beach. The food for amazing! The staff were excellent. And we felt very safe here. IT was great for the kids as they were so happy just to play on the beach and in the pool. And the beach we had to ourselves. Rajan, the manager, arranged trips for us to the tea plantation, elephant orphanage, turtle sanctury etc.

Max wadiya is a great place for a relaxed holiday.
We are a family of two adults and two teenagers from Israel, and we stayed in the villa for four nights at the end of August.
This small boutique hotel is beautifully decorated and excellently maintained. the service of the staff is outstanding, and we enjoyed the delicious food, the hospitality, the pool and different relaxing areas and the little surprises that awaited us every day.
We hardly left the villa, since we enjoyed it so much. The personal experience made it feel like home away from home, and we definitely recommend it to anyone traveling to Sri Lanka.
Many thanks to Ruth, the owner, who helped us arrange our trip and of course to Ranjan, the manager, for his hospitality.

Max Wadiya was a wonderful getaway for our family of 5. We rented the entire villa; our kids enjoyed the wide open space to run up and down and the yard to go exploring. They especially loved Ginger the dog (who was so sweet and docile). And they were prepared to take Ranjan with us because his food was amazing!

The setting of the house right on the beach was awesome. Our children had a chance to build sand castles and collect shells without having to "schlep" to a faraway beach. And the saltwater pool provided hours of entertainment. Ambalangoda is well placed if you want to travel north or south for sightseeing or activities. Ranjan helped plan some fun things to do and arranged all the transport too.

I would highly recommend Max Wadiya for groups who want to travel "low key" but want to be pampered at the same time. And if you have kids, this house is really a gem for a fun and easy to manage get away.

Room Tip: We only stayed in the villa; not sure about the suites.

Our unusual group of 5 adult females and 3 children couldn't have asked for a better Patch of Paradise for our family holiday. Max Wadiya, a home away from home where one feels pampered and cherished by the comfortable surroundings and the exemplary staff on hand waiting to cater to your every need..We stayed at the main villa for 4 nights(28th march to 1st May). Greeted by Ginger the adorable dog at the villa and delicious papaya juice, we knew the moment we stepped in that we couldn't have asked for a better spot for our family. The villa is right on the beach which is very clean and pristine and the views from the balcony of the villa are stunning. Well appointed rooms, refreshing salt water pool, lazing on the hammocks, rejuvenating massages and last but not the least the excellent, delicious meals prepared lovingly by Ranjan and his staff made our stay very comfortable and enjoyable. The food is prepared according to ones preferences therefore its a big plus for families travelling with children and vegetarians. Ranjan especially prepared crab for my son just because my son wanted to taste it. Staff was very helpful and always smiling. Max Wadiya is highly recommended for just anyone be it couples,families,elderly...everyone would feel special at this beautiful "patch of paradise". Hope to go back soon..:)

We started our two week honeymoon with four nights at Max Wadiya and simply did not want to leave. I'll keep this short because there are many rave reviews below that describe the place very well, but I must say that Arthur and Ruth have set the boutique tone perfectly, the place is intimate and luxurious in equal measure.

Ranjan and his staff made us feel so special and yet always knew when to give us the space to relax. We dined on the beach, in the gazebo and on our balcony, eating the best Sri Lankan food of our trip (though Ranjan will cook Western if you wish.)

We cannot wait to find another chance to visit Sri Lanka, in no small part so we can get back to Max Wadiya.

My husband and I just spent an absolutely fabulous 3 nights at Max Wadiya (17-20 April 2013). We were so completely amazed by the warm and gracious welcome of Rajan and his staff and the beautifully serene beachside paradise that waited for us. The Max Wadiya resort had been so enthusiastically recommended by a friend that we decided we would take a few days off to try the experience ourselves. We are so glad we did! We had a fantastic 3 days and hope to visit again soon and book the entire resort (5 suites) with friends. We felt so very spoiled by everyone at Max Wadiya. We stayed in the Tangerine Suite which was perfect. We relaxed by the pool daily and so enjoyed having fresh coconut milk served to us while taking a dip! The yoga and massages were an added bonus of relaxation.

The Max Wadiya Chef - trained by Rajan, the resident manager - is remarkable! Every dish was delicious and served family style with so many choices. The first dinner (served seaside) was truly one of the most delicious meals we have experienced anywhere. The Sri Lankan specialties were a new adventure for us. Each meal was a culinary surprise! The roti was so yummy at breakfast as were the "bulls eye" sunny side up eggs in the middle! The crabs were the best we have ever had! I was raised on the coast of Georgia in the US and we pride ourselves on the cooking of blue crabs, so I know good crabs and these truly were the best! Every curry was so yummy! Ranjan was so very kind and attentive in explaining what each dish was and how it was prepared. Having all of our meals generously served outside in a beautiful tiled roof cabana by such outstanding wait staff made us feel as if we were royalty! On our last evening, Ranjan prepared a lovely anniversary dinner for us complete with Chocolate Cake served on the beach. We will always remember how special and kind we were treated by everyone at Max Wadiya!

Mid morning and afternoon tea and coconut and tropical fruit juice drinks were so refreshing. The papaya and lime juice is not to be missed. The large salt water pool protected by a sunburst of tall slender palm tress was heavenly. Hammocks softly swaying in the tropical breezes always beckoned invitingly. The sound of the rolling surf only a few meters away was perfect for poolside or hammock naps!

I have to say a few words about Ginger - the warm and friendly mixed breed dog who was the first to greet us inside the gate. He is so sweet and we felt his love and loyalty as he watched over us during our stay. We are dog lovers and he seemed to sense that... Affectionate, immaculate manners, constant wagging tail. A perfect Max Wadiya treat.

We do not hesitate to give our highest and most enthusiastic recommendation to this magical getaway in the Indian Ocean. Idyllic is an understatement.

Room Tip: The Tangerine Suite in the new building is ground level with easy access to the beach. The shower is...

We stayed in the blue suite at the end of March for 3 days. The room is large with separate living and bed areas both of which are very comfortable. Typical of the extraordinary attention to detail in this hotel, every light globe and every electrical appliance worked, the DVDs and books in the room were clearly carefully selected and everything was spotlessly clean. The large garden and the pool are immaculately kept. As others have mentioned, the food was superb and Rajan very quickly worked out our preferences. What I liked most about the hotel was that it is completely lacking in the self-importance and over design that you sometimes find in hotels these days. Here the focus is on the guest’s experience and the cheerful, friendly and unobtrusive staff achieves a very high standard. There are a few places of interest to visit locally if you can drag yourself away and it is interesting to watch the fishing boats arrive and leave along the beach. We had the added good fortune of being able to help the release of newly hatched turtles which the hotel had been protecting and incubating. This is a wonderful place to stay and I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Room Tip: The blue suite has the greatest privacy
