“Nice location if you are upto skiing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 19, 2010

Phoenix park is about 4 hours journey from the Seoul International Airport. First you have to come to Samsong-dom from the airport, then change to Phoenix Park route. Ask someone if you can't find the bus stop.

This place is only for skiing. Nothing else. I came for a conference in the hotel during winter. The hotel was full of young couples trying ski day and night. The slopes are right behind the hotel. You can see them over the window.

Hotel is average, rooms are OK, buffet breakfast is so so. You must go for breakfast early else there will be huge rush.

Returning from Phoenix Park will require you to book your bus reservation early. There is a counter near the hotel for booking.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 19, 2010

After spending a week there in February 2010, I did not get any idea about the real category of the Phoenix Park Hotel (Address: Bokwang Phoenixpark Co. Ltd, 1095 Myeonon-ri, Bongpheong-myeon, Pyeongchang-gun, Gangwon-do, Korea, www.phoenixpark.co.kr). Although at the first sight, it looked as a near 4-star accommodation, I realized that it does not have an ordinary swimming pool that I, as a hotel guest, could use in the evenings before going to bed. It also did not seem to have a business corner, i.e. a pair of computers with Internet access. (Maybe it was because of so many young people who might occupy its resources in the evenings, who know.) Anyway, the hotel's nearest condominium (the 'blue' one) offers a dedicated 'computer room' where 1 hour on-line was 3,000 won. Related to the room rates: It seems that it is common in Korea to have different room rates per days in a week. In addition, the prices can differ in relation to the occupation of rooms. Whatever is the case, do not hesitate to contact the hotel in advance and check the rates for the period you plan to be there.

The main hotel's building is located just one minute walk from the nearest ski slopes, so you will not need any additional transportation to and from your room. The breakfast is served in the main building, but you can also use a 'family' restaurant room in so-called Blue Canyon center. (Do not worry about the cold weather outside, because there is an underground passage between the buildings, so you do not need to wear your winter boots to go for the breakfast in the morning.) Later during the day, there are a couple of specialized, Korean and fusion restaurants around. I did not try any of them because I found an excellent 'cafeteria' near the slopes to satisfy my hunger, both at the lunchtime and in the evenings. The cafeteria offers traditional Korean cooked meals, based on rice and vegetables, including well-known Kimchi, as well as some western-style meals, but you can also order fast food in several outlets, etcetera. Not related to the hotel itself, there are a couple of shops with various snacks, drinks and accessories.

Besides the 'main' 11-floor building, there are three separate condominiums, the 'orange', the 'green' and the 'blue' (the 'blue' one is some 25-floor high). As said, all four buildings are interconnected by underground corridors in between and with the Blue Canyon's facility. The Blue Canyon building includes bowling tracks, kids & moms playing ground, coffee shop and winter clothing store.

I found the hotel rooms as relatively good but it looked they really needed some renovation. In fact, my rooms (I changed the room during my stay, due to the noisy neighbors the next door) experienced some scraps on the furniture and clear signs of smoking in the rooms. I suppose the negative facts mentioned are mainly caused by careless young people and students alike who obviously spend a lot of their free time and weekends in that hotel. In addition, the youngsters prefer to be awake late during the nights, so if you plan to take a good sleep in the evenings, you might have difficulties with that in Phoenix Park Hotel. (I was accommodated in the main hotel building and do not have any particular idea about the situation in the condominiums. Nevertheless, after taking some walk near the condominiums, I realized that student groups were likely to play the music later in the evenings, sing the songs, etcetera – so be informed about, if it is what you expect to have in Phoenix Park Hotel.

The TV sets installed in hotel rooms did not have western programs, i.e. the TV channels in English. I would expect at least a couple of news programs, just to stay informed about what is going on down the street. Instead, they offered dozens of soap operas and kept repeating videos related to learning ski. Therefore, it seems that the Phoenix Park creators have not anticipated many foreign, English-speaking visitors in their resort. In opposite to that, hotels in Seoul offer several foreign channels in English language, including 'Arirang', an excellent *Korean* program for foreign visitors and immigrants.

The cleaning staff and receptionist personnel I found as professional and helpful. Despite the minor defects in the rooms mentioned, I was satisfied with the cleanliness and overall service. However, what I would like to see is a 'private' swimming pool that is not related to the Blue Canyon daylight facility and is located in the same building where my room is.
