I recently took my parents on a tour around Laos and one of the towns we stopped in was Phonsavan. I was really looking forward to visiting this town due to the history and it lived up to expectations. Searching on the net I found Craters and decided to give it a visit.
At first glance it looks like a great place with bombs used as decoration around the entrance. As soon as you walk through the door, it begins to go downhill. The staff, although not rude, are not friendly and the service is very poor. They do not speak much English or Lao.
The food is relatively expensive and the quality is not great at all. I was pretty disappointed but put it down to experience and decided to not some back. When I asked for the bill it went downhill further... The bill was c. 230,000 kip so I gave them 5, 50,000 notes - 250,000. The waiter came back and said one of the 50,000's was actually a 20,000... I was certain I had given the correct money, but gave them the benefit of the doubt and exchange the now 20,000 for a 50,000. I double and triple checked this. The waiter then came back and said one of the 50,000's was a 20,000.... As I had triple checked this I called them out.
They became all defensive and the waiter said I had given them 2 x 20,000's the first time - absolute rubbish. In the end a lady came out who spoke English and sorted it out with us. At this point the old Vietnamese waiter started kicking the young waiter at the back of the restaurant in view of the customers - very professional. He was then blanking me and slammed a door in my face.
Another place down the street was far better - come out of Craters and turn right, walk about 200m and you will find it on the left - Bamboozle.
