there is not a lot of great food in vang vien so this is all relative. however, the view here is great - overlooking the river and the beautiful limestone cliffs. we stayed at the hotel so we ate here on different days for breakfast, lunch and dinner. here is what we ate... Very tasty: Fresh pork spring rolls, fish laab, tom yum soup all delicious. Scrambled egg breakfast made perfectly, not too dry or burned as is common. Not so tasty: Green papaya salad had too much fish sauce for my taste.
you will find that at many places in Laos, and other southeast asian countries, the wait staff will hover until you order. i don't find this offensive although it can seem a bit awkward; i think it is simply their way of being attentive and sometimes i think the language barrier is also a confusion.
