To the hotel: Only by boat.
Hotel can arrange A/R from the airport for 25Eur/per person = small old mini bus+boat
(charming, kind of authentic...takes hours to get there).
We have noted "boat taxis" also from Porto Alegre, not sure on the price/safety.
Island: beautiful natural setting, rather wild. Not many people therefore very quiet, nice empty beaches. Equador line view point is very outdated (shame). The beaches are splendid. Worth to walk around the island, through the forest...
Hotel/Rooms: Setting of nice bungalows. Very paradise-ish like, cleaned daily, bathroom amenities provided. Spacious room, big comfortable bed. TV with multilingual channels (ENG, FR, PT, ES).
Pool: salty water which makes it perfect, huge and again mostly empty. Clean. Pool bar - limited, but sufficient considering number of people that actually go there for a drink.
Restaurant/Food: main restaurant + possible snacks/food in the bar.
We found their food very good and nothing to complain about. I guess food goes with everyones taste so lets say good, simple - but nothing that stayed remarkably in our memory.
I have personally missed chocolate, especially because Sao Tome is known or is selling itself as an island of Chocolate.
One tip to the hotel would be to take those tablecloths down - sometimes it is better to not to have them than to have them in not the best state.
People: very friendly and helpful. They language knowledge is limited. Very few speaks english but you can get by with french.
Spa-not used, can not comment.
Diving-not used, can not comment.
Excursion-used and not really worth the money.
In summary: Considering the part of the world and difficulty for getting supplies there - I would judge the place as adequate. (Maybe trying to replace foreign supplies with local made items would be of help)
There are some small issues 4* should not normally have.
I believe that if they manage better, this could easily be real 4-5* secret escape paradise. This place has a huge potential, but currently is only on 3+* level ...
