“Excellent resort”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2013

We have just returned from a very enjoyable 12 day holiday at the Heritage Awali where initially we were disappointed with the overall service but it was oBviously just an off day as after speaking to the duty management we experienced a huge improvement and for the rest of the holiday the service was very good. The golf was the highlight of my holiday the course was immaculate as well as being very challenging with the caddie masters all very very good especially when the course had 4 balls from before 7am to late. The other highlight was our meal at Chateau which was special. General manager Christoph runs a very good resort and is always look at dealing with any issues So we would certainly recommend the Heritage Awali.

Room Tip: All rooms seem to be in good position so no real need to worry.

What an amazing holiday!! The service at the hotel was exceptional, the staff always had a friendly smile and were willing to help. The food at the various restaurants was out of this world, especially at Amafrooty, C-Beach Club Cyan and Infinity Blue. Dolphin trip was amazing, snorkeling excellent. The beauty of the beaches and neighboring resorts was outstanding. Will definitely recommend to all my friends. Awali is definitely worth another visit!!

Just got back from a 2 week stay at the Awali. Had a fantastic time, but looking at reviews you either love it or hate it. Hope the info below helps... There's a lot to run through!!!

My husband uses a wheelchair so if you have any specific questions regarding access just get in touch.

Weather
We had originally hoped to travel in Dec but even back in August the hotel was booked up until Jan. Was a bit worried about the humidity in the middle of summer but although it was 30 degrees each day there was a breeze which helped to keep the humidity down. We had virtually wall to wall sun with the exception of a couple of downpours which were heavy but only lasted a few minutes or so and were quite refreshing. It stayed warm even at night but the AC in the room helped.

We tended to sit by the pool were there was good shade for me, the beds here tended to fill up fast, but there always seemed to be space on the beach, although not always in a shady spot. Take plenty of sun cream, sunglasses and a hat.

Location
The hotel is on the south of the island, so a taxi ride if you want to go to the capital - we didnt. The south is quite relaxed and although there are a few hotels it doesnt feel hemmed in. There are a few towns nearby that you could cycle to or get a taxi to if you wanted to explore a bit. We booked a taxi for 5 hours via the hotel and did a south island tour (tea plantation, black river gorges national park, shiva statue, coloured earth, waterfalls, coast road back) and it cost approx. £55 for the taxi. Also arranged a packed lunch through the hotel (order the day before). You could also do trips through tour operators but these were more money and didnt give the flexibility we got with the taxi.

Money
We got some money changed before we went at a rate of 47 rupees to the pound. The hotel changed currency but at a worse rate - 42 ruppees to the pound, although there are banks a short journey away with cash machines and money changing faclities that were giving an equivalent rate to the UK.

The hotel
When we arrived at the hotel we had the drums playing and the cooling drink everyone mentions. We had already sent through checking in details via email so this speeded up check in. We arrived in the early evening so got straight to our room. We were in block 1000 which is linked to the main hotel building. A good locaton for us but if you prefer an early night and are a light sleeper you may not like being able to hear the entertainment from the bar so worth bearing in mind. We had a requested a ground floor room and a plastic seat we could use in the shower - both of which we got. Our room was on the ground floor and looked out over the pool near the Zenzi Bar and we could also see the sea in the distance. There were rooms with a better sea view and some close to the beach, but we spent very little time in our room so didnt feel an upgrade would be worth it.

The hotel website had a great virtual tour were you can have a good look around before you decide to stay. This shows the hotel as we found it. We loved the African theme and the decor. It isnt a shiny hotel with lots of marble and glitz - so if you dont like the theme dont stay!

AI
We went all inclusive. The AI had just changed on the day we arrived and when we found out about the changes after we had booked we were not happy. We negotiated a few things to be added back in before we travelled - thanks Trailfinders! So we were able to have the jeep tour of the nature reserve and a meal at Annabellas in the Telfair Hotel next door (although we had to pay for drinks). We enjoyed Annabellas but we prefered the food at Infinity Blue. The jeep tour was great and its a real shame that you now have to pay for this trip on top.

When you check in you get a breakdown of what is in the AI, and if you are not sure just ask. Most drinks are included up to 11 at night (just check the drinks menu). The champagne tasted good to me, as did the local cider, beer and white wine. You could also have lots of other drinks including cocktails.

You can eat at Balafon the main buffet for dinner and also make reservations at Infinity Blue. You also get a meal at the Chateau but here you need to pay for drinks on top. There are some restaurants at the Telfair that you can get an allowance towards but we didnt try these. The Balafon buffet was great - especally the Mauritian Night (wed) and Indian Night (Friday). The food was tasty, well prepared and included a number of live cooking stations. A good range of meat, fish, salads, veggies and puddings.

Infinity Blue was great on an evening - you had to book and we went twice. The food was great and we have included a few photos.

There is a dress code in the evenings at the bars and restaurants - no jeans, men have to wear long trousers and shirts, closed shoes. We saw a few people in jeans and T shirts but this may have been new arrivals having just checked in.

Breakfast was also buffet style and included both hot and cold selections. A few people have commented on the birds in the buffet - yes they do fly around but all the food is covered so they only get to eat either when someone has left a cover off, or food is left on tables when people leave. If you dont like birds you may not like them flying around but if you sat in the lower sections of tables the birds didnt seem to go there. We quite liked seeing all the birds and had no issues.

Lunch options were good - no need to book, you could go to the buffet outside, Infinity Blue, have bar snacks, go to the C Beach Club or the Golf Club, have pizza brought to the beach... We didnt get to the golf club or try the pizza but the rest were great - although we only got to the C Beach Club on our last full day and it was a bit late to find out they did tequilla (my fave) as part of the AI. Here a selection of drinks were included with lunch but again if you are unsure just ask as it was all explained to us.

Sports
I took my gym kit but the closest I got to a work out was having a look around. A good selection of equipment and air conditioned. You could also hire bikes.

Aqua aerobics was on in the pool most days at 11:15ish. Looked good from my sun lounger!

I also kayaked, went on the glass bottom boat and the snorkeling trip. The snorkelling was disapointing for me as I didnt like the fact you had to go out on a boat and often the depth between the coral and the water was quite shallow and you were battling with the current. There were surprisingly few fish although the coral was nice. I would recommend going on the glass bottom boat to check it out first then decide if you want to snorkel (all the kit is provided). There is a current that runs towards the river at the C beach club from the Awali - strong enough to mean I couldnt swim against if for any length of time. In kayaks it was good because you paddled against it one way and then just let the current take you back.

Entertainment
The was a range of bands in the bar on an evening - all quite good.
We saw the dancers on mauritian night - they were also good.

Spa
You get a spa treatment on the AI. I had a relaxing massage which was good. The other half also had a free massage and a further massage which he loved. Prices are quite high, but as you get a free one you can try before you by. You can also use the spa facilities such as the pool, sauna and steam room, relaxation areas, plunge pool all for free The pool here was very quiet.

Staff
The staff were all very friendly, we had our favourites, but didnt see any grumpyness. We found that a smile, friendlyness and manners from us would get the same in return. How the chefs at the live cooking stations managed to look so happy was beyond me - if I had to work in the heat of the sun and the grills they were using I would not have been so happy! Drinks could take a while to come by the pool, but the staff were generally busy so not a problem.

Internet
You could get internet access at the Zenzi bar but you may need to walk around to get the best signal (tended to be better towards the beach side of the bar). You could get internet in your room for a fee.

Honeymooners
The hotel is a mix of families and couples. If you are a honeymooning couple wanting a child free holiday you may want to book away from the English and French school holidays. In our first week there were lots of young chidren but in the second week more older poeple and couples arrived. You could always head to the spa for some peace if needed.

So all in all a great holiday - we will return to the Awali but will need to start saving up now!

I picked this resort after a recommendation and i was not disappointed. the staff are all very friendly and the food is excellent.
The golf course is very good however you have to keep to the fairways as the 2nd cut is about 3" deep and you lose quite a lot of balls. The greens are very fast and inconsistent.
On a negative i don't understand why all inclusive guests mean 12 -2.30pm? (strange one that).
I went on the dolphin trip however with 25 boats chasing a small pod of dolphins we all asked the captain to leave the area as this is unacceptable and not very nice to see, We then went snorkeling the coral and fish was amazing i was out for about 1 hour (fantastic). You can snorkel on the beach however the current is so strong so i recommend you walk up the beach to the next hotel (Left at the beach) there is a small rocky lagoon take some bread and get close to the rocks the fish swarm around you. I ate at the restaurants however the food is excellent in the buffet area the service is slow Thats the mauritian way i guess.
The golf buggies will cost 950 rupees about £20 per person i advise taking quite a lot of balls you can buy lake balls these will cost about 300 rupees for 10. Try and play early we tied off at 7am most mornings, so your back for lunch and a swim, The shuttle bus takes you back and forward it runs every 10 mins.
Overall i would recommend this resort however i would say its a 4 star not a five but don't let that put you off.

Room Tip: Try and get an ocean view on the 2nd floor its worth the extra.

My first trip to Mauritius, and I wonder why I left it so long! I'm told that service is good generally in the resorts, well, I found the service at Awali to exceed my expectations. The natural attributes of the place are many: warm water, good weather, excellent location. But the stand-out aspect was the attitude of the staff. We were on an AIP (all inclusive package), which includes a selection from the finest drinks (one French champagne, Jameson whiskey, etc), all local drinks, (incl local rums, incl flavored rums of which there are many, beer, which is more than satisfactory, cocktails, wines - so-so, etc), and lunch and dinner. I think b'fast is always included.

All the meals were excellent, with one exception. Part of the AIP is a visit to the domaine fine dining restaurant, Le Chateau. A serious disappointment. I have reviewed that elsewhere. Otherwise, we were consistently satisfied. The Mauritian theme buffet was particularly good.

The activities are many and well managed, and mostly free. Water skiing (good), sailing (DNA), snorkeling, kayaking, and some that attract an additional fee, eg riding the tubes behind a speedboat (awesome!), were all worthwhile. A point here: the resort is on the south coast and the sea here has an enthusiastic rip current, so swimming in the sea is not on. In fact sitting in the sea leads to skidding along the coast, so consider this in your decision. The coral we saw (and we are enthusiastic at peering into DJ locker) was mostly dead. The strong current also adversely affects snorkeling.

However, overall, we were more than satisfied. OK, we were upgraded from deluxe rooms (excellent) to a villa (hello!) during our stay, but even without that I would highly recommend this resort.

We also visited the spa for a variety of facials, massages etc, and found their amenities, service and skill to be of the finest.

Room Tip: ask for a room overlooking the pools with a sea-view

This is a nice hotel but the soft furnishings could be better, they were stained and worn especially in the public areas. The food was generally very good and most of the staff were friendly and helpful.
The golf club was very good but why was the all inclusive only from 12-2.30pm? It's nice to have a drink after a game instead of having to go straight back to the hotel.
The free massage was good as was the free trip to the nature reserve with the guide being very knowledgable.
The room was nice but the bathroom had damp feeling and as our clothes were in a cupboard there they always felt damp too.
Overall it is a nice hotel
