“If you only safari to one place, this is it”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2013

Having just completed a personalized luxury safari to 5 locations in Kenya and Tanzania, we came home, and formulated some conclusions. All 5 locations were fantastic. But we did compile a rating, and Wilderness Trails was our #1. Our criteria were: quality of game viewing; quality of lodging; quality of food; quality of service; and overall ambience. All the game viewing we saw in Africa was excellent...but different. At Lewa we saw in VERY close proximity to the lodge: lions, buffalo, black rhino, white rhino, Grevy Zebra, regular zebra, cheetah, giraffes, and the usual assortment of monkeys, birds, etc. Plentiful, and all tracked and described expertly by your guides. Overall, game viewing was the best we saw in our 5 locations. Food was fabulous, much of it locally grown, fresh, expertly prepared and served with style. Wilderness Trails was our first stop in Africa, and we grew to appreciate the communal dining, where you had a chance to meet the other guests, not everyone offers this. Now to the piece de resistance: at Wilderness Trails you're sharing the facility with the owners, Will and Emma Craig. You're in their HOME, and it shows. Will and Emma have also invested heavily in raising the lifestyle of local Masai...be prepared to buy woolen rugs, handmade on site. You can also enjoy safari by horseback, camel on foot or in the traditional jeeps (which are custom designed for photographers). And do NOT miss a biplane ride, piloted by Will: it was a key highlight in our entire 14 day trip. We cannot say enough about Lewa, and this specific lodge.

My wife and I stayed here for four nights in June 2012 and loved it. The ride in from the airstrip was just the beginning of spectacular wildlife viewing. On the way in to the lodge we saw rhinos, giraffes and elephants, to mention a few. The accommodations are fantastic and reflect the native materials used in the bush. The food was outstanding and we enjoyed the family-style dining and getting to meet the other guests.

The staff was superb and went out of their way to accommodate us by setting up special picnics, one of which was prior to a night safari under the moonlight. The highlight of the trip was the wildlife. We were able to sit and view a pride of lions for over an hour as they lounged in the grasses and eventually made their way out at dusk to search for dinner. The connection to the animals was unmatched and I can't wait to return.

My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights in mid September. I was very, very impressed. This is our second trip to Kenya, first time to Lewa and I would go back, no question. I arrived at Lewa with a bit of a stomach problem which I had picked up in Rwanda. The staff bent over backwards to do whatever they could to make me feel better, from giving me re-hydrating salts to cooking plain white rice for my meals. Our main reason for coming to Lewa was to see both the white and black rhinos and we were not disappointed. Our guide catered exactly to our desires. He was very smart, spoke great English and went out of his way to make sure we were happy. The room was very comfortable, had a nice assortment of beverages available and a spectacular view. Stay here and be very satisfied!!

A special call out to our armed escort Rakita (sp?) who accompanied us on our walking and driven game viwing. Extraordinarily able to find and show us animals, explain their behaviors and willing to pass on his general knowledge of the bush. The staff service was fantastic and the welcoming owner/operators made us feel like family from the moment we arrived. The accomodations are over the top spectacular in design and placement with views down the valley and over the plains.
But what makes this venue most pleasing to us was the feeling of being at home in a yesteryear place filled with familial memorabilia with access to todays amenities such as internet access, on call hot water, a stocked fridge and plenty of it,

Dear All,

I have now returned to the UK from the most magical trip to Wilderness. From the moment we arrived at this exclusive location, we were treated like royalty in a very relaxed and happy environment. The attention to detail in all aspects was quite outstanding and we are so grateful to you for you making this an amazing trip.

Whether you are looking for relaxation or non stop activities with knowledgeable and kind staff, you will not find any better place than Wilderness.

Many many thanks

James Middleton

Pretty tough to beat as this place has it all. Magnificant setting , great accomadation and really good food . Animals abound on the preserve and there is much to do . Riding walking game drives - excursions . Hard to fit it all in .
Great staff who make it all work with grace.

My wife and I have had the pleasure of visiting Lea Wilderness Trails twice. Each stay was exceptional. All the rooms are amazing. The food is great and the game viewing is outstanding. What really makes this place special are the staff and its owners. Any need you have is taken care of quickly. The service here beats out all the 5 star hotels I have visited.
