“The highpoint of a great safari”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2014

Ekorian's Mugie Camp blends everything that's great about Kenyan safaris: unparalleled hospitality, superb game-viewing and the chance to enjoy the magnificent African wilderness from the comfort of a luxurious, tented camp.

Josh and Donna, camp managers par excellence, welcomed us like old friends and it only added to the magic when their two-year-old daughter joined us on the game-drives to help spot animals (at some remarkable distances, which put the rest of us to shame). We couldn't have asked for a more knowledgeable or enthusiastic guide, or a kinder, more attentive hostess.

We ate like kings and slept like babies, lulled by the sounds of the wildlife through the canvas of our spacious and beautifully appointed tents. I only wish we could have stayed longer to swim and kayak on the dam, and catch some slightly bigger fish.

Room Tip: There's only six: One is closest to the mess tent, and six is furthest away.

We had the most wonderful time at Mugie - fabulous tented accommodations with the friendliest staff and owners. Donna and Josh made a huge effort to give us the best time - the wildlife was terrific (lions in particular), the outdoor options vast from horseback riding to kayaking, volleyball, golf, fishing. Donna and her kitchen team produced the loveliest and yummiest meals. Tons of warmth and fabulous hosts. Our stay (3 families with 15 people in total) was perfect in every way and made our trip to Kenya.

I spent two nights at Ekorian with my husband in late December and they were two of the most peaceful days we've had all year. The camp is beautiful -- it has absolutely everything you could want but is small, intimate and feels really exclusive. We saw several lion cubs, just metres from the car, went kayaking and fishing on the dam, had some beautiful sundowners and some lovely pre-supper snacks around the campfire.

We didn't see another car during our entire trip, which was quite a contrast from a previous trip to the Masai Mara.

I can't recommend this place enough. The food was delicious, there was a perfect balance of activities and relaxation and the hosts were superb. Looking forward to heading back again in March with friends.

Room Tip: All of the tents are fantastic. Comfortable beds, hot water battles, lovely bathrooms and toiletries...

Spent an incredible night at Mugie with friends recently, from the moment we arrived we were spoiled with calm and thoughtful service, the drive presented excellent wildlife and oh the food! Josh and Donna are superb hosts and have established a superb hideaway for people in need of relaxation - I will definitely be back with wife in tow!

I’ve traveled almost everywhere in East Africa, and Ekorian’s is a great little find. Family owned and run, this uncomplicated and very comfortable camp (only six tents) has an intimate, laid back, and homey feel. The cuisine was delicious, and Josh and Donna were delightful, laid back, and knowledgeable hosts (they were both born and raised in the area and Josh is a professional guide). With two small children of their own, the camp is also child friendly.

In terms of wildlife, the 42,000 acre fenced conservancy provides excellent viewing and ranks right up there with anything to be found in the greater Laikipia region. During my stay I saw lots of elephants, large numbers of buffalo (including a herd of perhaps 300), lions, grevy and common zebra, eland, oryx, giraffe, and more. The camp’s eco-friendly and incredibly quiet Muruti game viewing vehicle was a fantastic option, allowing us to get much closer to plains game than a typical land cruiser while simultaneously offering a “closer to nature” feel.

The conservancy enjoys a huge dammed lake, frequented by elephants and other animals, which can be enjoyed by kayak or canoe. Observing wildlife from the vantage point of a boat is a relatively rare experience in East Africa, and doing so in a private kayak is, I suspect, utterly unique to Mugie (not to mention awesome). One of my favorite experiences during my stay was being on the water at sunset as thousands of egrets returned from all directions, flying just over our heads, to roost on one of its islands.

I definitely recommend this camp. Compared to other properties in Laikipia Ekorians is very reasonably priced, and in my opinion, it is certainly one of the better value safari camps within its pier group that I've been to (many).

We spent four nights at Mugie Camp and had a wonderful time. Being greeted by Josh and Donna and their darling daughter and the dogs made us feel right at home. Even getting stuck in the mud the first night was an adventure! The tents are very comfortable; food and drinks were great - yummy homemade yogurt for breakfast! Cape buffalo abound along with elephants, giraffes, lions, various gazelles, Greavey zebras, and some smaller animals we didn't see in other areas. And there are so many options to fill the days - tracking with the bloodhounds, visiting the local school and the market, golfing or just hiking the golf course as we did - even kayaking on the lake. Mugie Camp was a treat!

Room Tip: Tent 1 is family size with an extra attached room.

The most awesome weekend way. Josh & Donna are the most wonderful and thoughtful hosts, nothing is too much trouble for them, even changing a puncture in water up to their undercarriages!!
If you want a place that has the most wonderful ambiance then Ekorian's Mugie Camp is the place to go. Golf, kayaking with wild animals just nearby and the most amazing game viewing available.
This is a place one must go to.

Room Tip: All rooms are brilliant. 1 is closest if you are less agile and 7 the furthest away.
