What do I love about Loisaba? Everything!! From the moment we drove up to the entrance of the lodge, I knew I was in for a treat! Kirsty, Loisaba's camp manager, made me feel right at home with her wide smile and her sincere welcome. She is not one of these camp managers who disappears once the guests are checked in. She is there for you and will do everything she can to make your stay memorable. Once we walked into the lobby and dining area, I got my first glimpse of some of the most incredible views I have ever seen in Africa! Completely breathtaking!!
The lodge is situated on top of a large set of steep hills with nothing but pristine wilderness surrounding it. The walkway to my room, not far from the lobby area, was surrounded by gorgeous gardens full of fragrant flowers and indigenous plants. My room was colorful, cozy, and extremely comfortable! I especially appreciated the cold drinks they had stashed away in the little fridge. The nice-sized bathroom, which was attached to my room, also had a view! The outside deck was perfect! I spent hours sitting outside watching the wildlife in the valley below. I also quietly observed the really cute rock hyraxes that made their home in the rocks below my deck. It was all quite wonderful!
When it comes to safari camps, I am picky! But Loisaba had it all! The guides and staff were fantastic, the food was delicious (we had homemade ice cream two nights in a row!!), and the game viewing was devine!! I kept thinking to myself over and over while I was there that Loisaba was exactly what an authentic safari lodge should be!! Friendly staff, great rooms, a roaring fire in the sitting room every night, very few safari vehicles, and African wilderness everywhere you looked. It was amazing! I also loved that there were lots of leopard around the lodge (don't miss having sundowners in the leopard blind that is right beside the lodge. We saw three leopard in a span of one hour!) It is at Loisaba too where where you will most likely see wild dogs, which is a treat in itself! They are endangered and are not seen in most places.
If you can, spend a night or two in a fabulous "Starbeds." We were driven there in the late afternoon so we would have time to get settled. Just when it was getting dark, we all met in the cozy dining area for dinner. Before, however, a roaring campfire was waiting for us on the deck below. We sat there under the stars, with drinks in hand, and discussed that day's adventures. Hippo could be heard grunting in the lake close by. It was simply enchanting. And sleeping under the stars in a comfortable "starbed" is something you will never forget!
I loved everything about Loisaba Wilderness Lodge! It is a magical place and should not be missed if you visit Kenya. I would recommend staying no less than three days and more, if you can. There is plenty to do and the game drives are incredible!
If you can, stay in one of the "Starbeds." This was the highlight for me! Sleeping on a comfy bed under the stars was an experience I will never forget!
