Solio Lodge was the 3rd leg of my trip in October with friends, having already stayed at Giraffe Manor and Sasaab. Our stay was for 3 nights and with so many things to do at Solio we were determined to do and see everything which, thanks to Ivan we did. He was always on hand to advise us on how we could make the best use of our time and then as if by magic, made it happen.
The riding was fun and the horses were well cared for and obviously dearly loved by JJ.
Amos was our guide for the 3 days and apart from being great fun and an exceptional guide he is a lovely person. He has a deep understanding of the animals and flora and a genuine joy of sharing his knowledge with us. I swear he has a sixth sense when it comes to knowing where to find the game. Within minuets of our first drive we saw a baby rhino with its mother. Cheetah on the night drive, lionesses with 3 cubs having a bit of a stand off with a herd of Rhino which was magical to watch. Two male lions hunting, also on the night drive. So many Giraffe!!! Its all there at Solio.
The accommodation is exceptional. With the glass fronted panoramic view of the reserve and Mount Kenya in the distance you can wake up to a cuppa in bed and watch the animals passing by the front of your lodge. Paris did a wonderful job of making sure the lodge was always welcoming with log fires and hot water bottles after an adventurous day, and the food thanks to Agnes and the team was sensational.
I would recommend a visit to the Abadere National park if you have time. Its a short drive from Solio and being 4,000m above sea level is very diverse and simply stunning scenery. Parts of it reminded me of the wild parts of Scotland with spectacular waterfalls.
I couldn't fault my stay at Solio, it was a magical 3 days.
