Ol Pejeta, a 3-hour drive from Nairobi, is in a picturesque setting surrounded by Mount Kenya, the Aberdare Mountains and the Loldaiga Hills. It is the closest conservancy from Nairobi to see the Big 5 and we saw 4 of them in less than 30 minutes, closely followed by a wonderful close encounter with a cheetah.
The park is large and we benefitted from being accompanied by a guide who, by keeping in contact with other rangers, was able to take us to the best places to spot lion and elephant. We were there for a few days and on some mornings, we just enjoyed sitting by the water waiting for animals to visit us – and they did – including 2 beautiful bull elephants who were tempted to bathe in the cool water before being chased away by a visitor who clearly didn’t understand elephant etiquette – animals always have right of way! Sitting by the water we watched some amazing feeding birds including the very beautiful sacred ibis and a fish eagle that appeared to be not at all bothered by our presence. We also captured great pictures of groups of bea eaters and the wonderful starlings – splendid, superb and glossy!
As well as our cheetah encounter, a highlight for us was a nature walk with Robert (who is based at Morani) – who is extremely knowledgeable about the conservancy, animals, birds and plants. His willingness to share his knowledge added great value to all that we were seeing.
