“Let Down of the Year”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 5, 2013

I last visited Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club in 2010. It was an absolutely amazing experience and our small group on retreat had a really good time. I purposed to return some day either for work or pleasure. I recently moved back to Kenya and was able to organize a retreat for my (significantly) larger group of Senior Management at the Fairmont. All I can say is that my colleagues who may not have a previous experience to compare with are more or less happy. I, on the other hand, am absolutely shocked at the drop in standards especially when it comes to the rooms. I am in a "suite" by the river and from creased linen, shabby carpets, untidy housekeeping, deteriorating fixtures and plumbing, I might as well have checked into some motel in the nearby Nanyuki. What is most disappointing is the lack of consistency in messaging from the reception staff who were full of excuses and no action - in terms of moving me to another room. If it wasn't for the courteous Duty Manager, I would be half way to Nanyuki town. If only the Fairmont management paid better attention to detail and customer service. However, the food remains consistently good, the F&B staff cheerful and the spectacular backdrop that is Mt. Kenya never fails to lift ones spirits.

There is no doubt about it, the Mount Kenya Safari Club is alluring for its history (William Holden and all that), and appealing for many, but my wife and I and another couple were in the middle of a 15 day safari in Kenya and Tanzania. I fell in love with the tented bush camps and personally had no desire to return to "civilization," and the MK Safari Club is very civilized, but not what I came to see in Africa. The MKSC is beautiful, and our two bedroom "cottage" was lovely, but in a "is this Africa or Northern California?" way? I found there were too many people, too many corporate meetings, and too much of a "conference" atmosphere. There is also an abundance of marginal food served from groaning buffet tables. After being up close and personal with the magnificent animals in their habitat (Amboseli, Masai Mara, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro), looking out from your tent at night observing a canopy of stars from the sky to the horizon, and surrounded by bush night sounds, the MKSC minimizes that entire experience. There are thousands of resorts around the world with the MKSC "ambience," but why would you come all the way to Africa to experience it when there's probably one of these within a few hundred miles of your house? Each to their own.

This place is ideal if you want to disconnect with the world - very green and peaceful.

Rooms are good, food is nice. The golf course is really good

However, very expensive and the drinks at the hotel are pricey!

Thank you so much for your review of the Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club, received on the 29th January 2013.
We really appreciate you taking the time to review our property, and we are pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us.
It is always gratifying to hear from our guests that they enjoyed the service & product - we pride ourselves on turning moments into memories for our guests.
I am sorry to hear that you felt our drinks pricing structure was expensive. Imported beverages in Kenya will certainly be more expensive than in their country of origin or than in countries with lower importation tax and duty. We do however, endeavor to ensure that our pricing is in-line with our competitors and we regularly and carefully review our pricing structure to remain competitive.
Once again thank you for your very valued feedback.
We look forward to welcome you back to Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club in the near future.
Kind Regards,

Niall P. Cowan

3 hours from Nairobi. Lots of action for the kids and family from golf to fishing. Not too much in terms of gaming. You need to drive down to the Al Pajeta conservancy for game drives. Decent food but could have been better.

Room Tip: Garden suites can fit 6

Thank you for taking the time to your provide feedback of your recent stay with us at the Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club.
We are delighted to hear that you and your family enjoyed your stay with us; I am pleased that you managed to enjoy the various options and activities that we have on offer to our valued guests. Did you manage to visit the animal orphanage on-site (children love the experience since it is so interactive). For game drives Ol Pajeta is about 20mins away from the hotel and Solio and Sambaru are also within easy driving distance from the property.
I do look forward to personally welcoming you back on your next stay at the Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club.
We look forward to, once again, turning moments into memories for you.

One of the best places I have ever been. Huge place with lot of activities to do with... Food was also superb... The staffs were hospitable with a smile always. The game drive from the property were really good. And i wish to visit the place again if I had a chance again... Had fun playing the maze game in the property...

We are delighted that you your stay with us and thank you very much for taking the time to share your valued feedback with regards to your stay.
Guest feedback is so important to our operation and it is always gratifying to know that we have exceeded the expectations of our valued guests.
Your kind comments regarding our team, activities and hotel are greatly appreciated and will be eagerly passed on.
I am pleased that you enjoyed our maze; did you know that it is an exact replica of the world famous Hampton Court Maze in England. The maze itself is referred to as a multicursal or puzzle maze and is known for confusing and intriguing visitors with its many twists, turns and dead ends. I am delighted that you enjoyed your visit.
We all look forward to welcoming you back to the Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club - thank you for allowing us to turn your moments into memories.
Kind Regards

A beautiful property. An excellent weekend destination from Nairobi, with a lot of activities including golf, fishing, horse riding etc. What took away from the experience was an inordinate delay in check inn post which rooms were still not ready. Moreover it seems to have become a favorite for large tourist groups which takes away from the serenity of the place.

Room Tip: Garden suites can accommodate upto 6 people.
