“Great Disappointment!!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2012

Came here for a staff retreat/conference. We had made our reservations well in advance. The larger part of the group arrived, we had our lunch, had the first portion of the conference and were getting ready for dinner when we found out that they had overbooked and our facilitators rooms were no longer available.

I am not sure at what point they knew that they did not have rooms for all of us but the least they could have done seeing that they had messed up was let us know before we left Nairobi of the mix up so that we know how to organize ourselves.

The manager (Patrick) did not seem too concerned about the mess he had created (the Nairobi office did not seem to be aware of the over booking or at least that is how it appeared to us).

After some back and forth and not getting a resolution that was good enough for us, we contacted a nearby location which luckily had availability for all of us (including the conference facilities), we left the establishment at about 9.30 pm and were well received at our new location which we all enjoyed.

I was appalled at the quality of service we received and would not recommend the place to anyone.

Lake Elementaita Lodge is off a dirt track from the main road and near to Lake Elementaita but it is a fairy long walk to the lake. The flower filled gardens are lovely and peaceful and there is a lovely pool and grassy lawns to relax in. It isquite difficult to navigate the paths to the main building in the evening as the outside lighting is poor an the surfaces uneven.

The rooms are quite small and rather dark both in terms of furniture and lighting but very clean and the beds are comfortable. Shower facilities varied from room to room and were generally in need of upgrade.
The hotel has a small bar area , reasonable lounge and small shop.
Meals can be taken inside or on a covered porch with a view of the lake food was good but selection was a little limited.

A good lodge for one or two nights stay whilst doing Lake Elementaita and Nakuru visits.

The plus of this place are great garden & outside the dinning hall, rooms are very average, old furniture, not well maintained, pretty average, food choices were quite OK, rather decent, staff are very warm, helpful, overall not recommended

Being charged 100 us dollars for a single on half board for a resident, I expected a far higher standard than that experienced. The hotel is run down and is in dire need of refurbishment, remnants of last years Christmas decorations remain sellotaped on the walls in the exterior part of the dining room. The wine display - a few old logs thrown onto a table with old bottles of wine filled with water and replugged with old corks was rather pathetic. The decor attrocuius and lacks any style or imagination. The food was practically indelible , roast chicken on the dinner menu consisted of a breast and wing on the bone, this had been deep fried until it resembled A pork scratching. Asparagus soup was so thickened with flour that a skin on the surface needed to be punctured before eating.

The only saving graces were the wonderful location, the friendly staff and the hot water.

Might have been nice many years ago, but now phones in the rooms are only decorative as they did not work. Meals are very basic and the restaurant room is furnished like North American suburban basements in the 1960's. This was billed as a 4-5 star to our group, but it definitely is not. Might be fine for budget travel, but nothing else.

The Lake Elementaita Lodge is located in an isolated area, down a long dirt trail, near (but not on) the shore of Lake Elementaita (it is a long walk to the lake). The best part of the resort are its flower filled gardens. However, after dark the walk to the main building can be dangerous because of the broken down walkways and the poor outside lighting of the hotel. The rooms are very very small and rather dark. The hotel features a pool (not used), a small bar, a micro shop, and a lounge area. Meals can be taken inside or on a covered porch with a view of the lake in the distance. The food was fine but the selection very limited. While the room was clean it was in great need of an upgrade.

Room Tip: Ask for a room near the main building. Bring a flashlight to walk to/from your room after dark.

The promised upgrade certainly hadn't happened in the rooms that we were in. Very tatty and dated. The food was awful as well. It was quiet at the lodge (just after Easter) and I think that meant they weren't refreshing food properly, but even the freshly made food was poor quality.

The pool is lovely, with a beautiful view, and you are right next to Lake Elementaita which is in season a flamingo lake, with very hot water - great fun! I took a horse ride to the lake which was great.

The staff are all truly wonderful. Extremely helpful, friendly and brilliant with the kids.

However I think it's easy to find a much better lodge for the money. We did negotiate a reasonable deal but even so it wasn't cheap, and Sopa, our next stop (next to Lake Niavasha) was much nicer and we were paying the same amount for it.

Room Tip: Check they've a bath - not all do
