“Great service, great stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2013

Sleeping Warrior camp is a fun, relaxing, and just luxurious enough to make you feel that you have really escaped. The food is excellent and the setting for the dining terrace couldn't be better with great views and a super homey feel. Because this is a small camp with only a few tents, everyone is very friendly. Great for a getaway from Nairobi or for a stop on your safari tour. We stayed in Eagle's nest, which was so fun because of its location perched on a rocky outcrop. The only downside is that the bathroom is mostly open air and thus can get very chilly on cold nights out in the Rift. the outdoor bathtub is a great touch and makes you feel like you've stumbled onto a private oasis. The owners are always around and very accessible - the staff are great, and the camp/lodge works very hard to develop positive relations with the surrounding communities. We are huge fans, because unlike in the National Parks where you cannot get out of your car, Soysambu is a great place for hiking. We did a hike up "Half Hill" and had a great experience!

This was a welcome stay after our horrible experience at Roberts Camp on Baringo. The staff is very good, the food is great, and the camp was well done. One of the highlights is the ability to go on night game drives. This gave us a very cool perspective.

My son loved the rock hyrx that are all over the place. These funny animals climbing up the trees.

Room Tip: I did not see the other tents, ours had a great view of Sleeping Warrior and the lake behind it.

We love to escape from the bustle of Nairobi to this relaxing, scenic, comfortable camp and feel we are so lucky to be able to experience the lake and conservancy of Soysambu as guests of this botuique camp. You must try the Eagle's Nest which is up some rocky steps, push your four poster bed on wheels out under the stars (with a mosquito net over you) and wake to a tray of hot tea, and the amusing faces of curious rock hyrax peering at you from trees, behind rocks, over walls.. The birds bathe on the verandah of the main building, the food is excellent and colourful, the wallk up the secluded small mountain and over the volcano a real treat, too. Drive around the lake to see Rothchilds giraffe, pelicans, flamingo, buffalo, eland, all realxed and set against a soda lake. Try "Lake View" tent, new and beautiful and also "Guesthouse" with an outdoor shower! Have a sundowner from atop a small hill where they build a fire and set up safari chairs for you while you sip cold wine. Marvelous. Only 1 1/2 hours from Nairobi and great value.

Room Tip: As above- Eagles Nest, very romantic but tiny so best for a couple, with an outdoor bathtub and loun...

My family and my cousin's family stayed here for 3 nights at the Tented Camp and had a wonderful experience. This is a great place for those who don't want to be in a hotel but also don't want to rough it out. A great compromise between the two. My husband and I were in the Lakeview tent and it was very comfortable. The view was spectacular especially at sunrise and sunset. When we first arrived there the staff had left the doors open and a number of wasps had made their way in. My husband being allergic to bee stings we were a bit worried but the rooms are supplied with bug repellant and as soon as we closed the doors and opened the screened windows we no longer had any issues with the bees.
The food was very good and every meal was different. The staff was very kind and courteous. Lawson, the manager on site, was very helpful. My niece who is an animal lover took pleasure in feeding leaves to the hyraxes that came up to the veranda. Unfortunately, one of them inadvertently bit her. Lawson offered to have her taken to the nearest clinic and put her parents in touch with a doctor that he knew. In the end, no immediate action was required but she did get rabies shots when she returned to Nairobi the next day. I would suggest that a gentle reminder to avoid feeding animals be given to all guests when they arrive or maybe a discreet sign on the veranda.
The game drives in the area are fabulous. What is different from other parks is that you can really go off-road here and get quite close to the animals (like giraffes) without disturbing them. We saw flamingos in flight and that was a spectacular site. Also, because this area is not as popular as other parks like Masai Mara, you won't be surrounded by large groups of tourists. It is also nice to see the various animals drinking in the small pond that can be seen from the veranda and some of the tents.

Room Tip: Pick from the following tents if you can: Lakeview, the Guest House, or the Eagle's Nest. They...

The Sleeping Warrior is set in a beautiful location with stunning views. The tented accomodation is excellent, comfy beds and a shower with a view. The service is outstanding, nothing is too much trouble. Great food, lots of variety and a new menu each time we go. I would highly recommend this place if you want a completely relaxing weekend.

Room Tip: Lake View is a great room with beautfiul views. Eagle's nest is great fun as you can sleep and b...

We stayed at the recently opened Lodge.
-The food was delicious, the rooms were huge and very comfortable; however from most rooms you would have to drive to the dining room/ bar area
-The staff were very accomodating in terms of our requests but speed of service was a little slow and not enough cold beers of choice.
-The hosts were very friendly; it was very interesting talking to Mr. Damon
-The wildlife around the lodge is not very prolific but you truly get the sense of being in the African Bush.....all alone
-the lake itself is a heaven for birders; thought its about a 30-40 min drive away by 4wd
-cant wait for their heated pool and hotspring fed spa to open up for our next visit

All in all makes a great escape from the city

It is true that most of the staff are incredibly kind, sweet and helpful.. But ....and that is what we found with this place... "but"

Beautiful sunset drinks on a hill..but we asked to be taken lakeside. Drinks cold and view lovely.. But one guide sat texting in his phone with the beeping on.. And then had loud conversations with the barman.. Had to interject and ask them to help us listen for the birds.

Lovely dinner one night with best lamb ever in all time living in Kenya... But morning bacon sent husband later in day with violent food poisoning.

Rooms secluded, outlook serene, but no place to sit in room besides on the bed. Bed tired, and details irked like no valance on crusty old bed base..

Really proud head manager.. Sooooo lovely, but honestly this place is just too tired looking and not enough attention to details unlike other reasonably priced places in Kenya. We left camp early making lame excuses as did not want to offend staff that did try to make the stay special.
