We had visited Yosemite valley and Tuolumene Meadows for 4 summers in a row, and loved it - so we decided to sign-up for a guided hike in the High Sierras. We did 4 camps in 5 days. While the views were amazing, I missed most of them because my head was down and eyes glued to the trail - the trails were rocky and steep, and I did not want to trip. So I mostly saw rocks and horse droppings. The hikes are no joke. First day was 40 switch backs in just over a mile. Another day, it was 70+. It was just too much for me to enjoy. I also did not appreciate the stinky toilets, getting up in 30F temperatures to go to composting bathrooms in the middle of the night, the overly cheery, forced enthusiasm of the camp workers, etc. Plus, I probably should have packed lighter. If you are an experienced backpacker, go for it. If not, you are warned!

A way to see the high Sierra without a heavy backpack. Meet other hikers. But there are a lot of hikers at these camps. Usually good food. Cots are acceptable. PCT is difficult because of heavy use and heavy trail engineering, meaning a surface of many rocks. I prefer the other trails.

Room Tip: This is a dorm.

The setting was spectacular, and the food provided was outstanding; having cots in big four-person tents was very nice. Three years ago we visited the five backcountry High Camps over seven days, but this time we planned to stay two nights each at Sunrise, May Lake, and Glen Aulin. Unfortunately, because of fire we were evacuated (by walking back out seven miles) from Sunrise almost before we reached that High Camp, but we were put up for two nights at the roadside Tuolomne Meadows High Camp and then continued the trip as planned.

First time trip. The crews at both camps were great, accommodations excellent, and the food phenomenal. Great hiking and views at night. Look forward to getting back next year!

PS hot drinks at 7am and 6 pm. Meals at 730 am and 630 pm.

The serene setting and the spectacular scenery while hiking to the camp makes a traveller want to go back again. The excellent service and the gourmet food the staff provides even to vegetarians is unparalleled.

I hesitate to say this, but hiking to the High Sierra Camps in Yosemite is one of my favorite things to do each summer. I am reluctant only because securing a bed is very competitive. I love each High Sierra Camp. They're all in beautiful settings though each is different. The food at the camps is usually good to excellent, the beds are comfortable, and the staff members are knowledgeable.

May Lake, one of the High Sierra camps, features a spectacular location, fantastic food, an organized, friendly, welcoming and fully competent staff, as well as the congenial dining experience that harkens back to an earlier era of Yosemite. Explore the high country: awaken to a chickoree climbing a lodgepole pine, encounter a blue grouse feeding quietly, see the morning glow on Mt. Hoffman. Go!
