A really neat historic place to stay. NO ELEVATORS. Piano player at night is unbelieveably talented.

Room Tip: Be sure to make sure what your room has and doesn't have in terms of amenities. But a great plac...

I really wanted to like The Wawona, I really did. It looks stunning in pictures, its in a good location and its surroundings are very picturesque.
But when you arrive it presents a different story. First there's the trek from the car to the rooms and up a flight of stairs with the cases.
You arrive in the rooms and they have...well, seen better days shall we say. The radiator was particularly noisy banging and hissing into the night.
There was a wait for the restaurant too - 10 minutes for dinner and half an hour for breakfast. We figured that the wait must indicate a good quality restaurant but I'm sorry to say it was dreadful. They can't do much as a hotel about the age of the building and its "quirks" but thats no excuse for the quality of the staff they employ in the restaurant or the quality of food they serve. The staff needed a better restaurant manager in charge - they were scruffy looking, not particularly communicative and the food was quite honestly appalling. It was also $92 for two main courses, wine and a dessert !
As other reviewers point out the walls are paper thin and if it rains then prepare for a light shower to sound like a downpour.
I would avoid this hotel too if you have younger members in your party. Its fair to say that the hotel guests are a little older (maybe it was the time of year, I don't know) but if younger members of your family are hoping to mix with kids closer to their age then they will be disappointed. I honestly can't imagine the lack of TV, wifi and Piano music would go down well either.

The Wawona needs to get into the 21st Century. It doesn't have to lose any of its charm or some of its quirks (lots of other historic hotels manage this) but for the price it charges I honestly didn't feel it represented good value for money.

The service of the staff we rated a 4 but for the rest this hotel would struggle to survive if there was normal competition. We had a double bed room (and breakfast) with no bathroom facilities for $112 per night. The en-suite rooms are significantly more expensive. The room was a little tired and having to walk on the outside verandas to the shared bathrooms in the middle of the night is not fun especially if the weather is cold! The only place to eat is the hotel restaurant and the food is less than average quality for the prices. The location of the hotel is some way from the main attractions of the park. I would suggest one night at Wawona Hotel and visit the Mariposa Grove and then drive to Glacier Point overlooking Yosemite Valley (a Must) and then head down into the Yosemite Valley for the next nights.

We booked one night at the Wawona, having a spare night between our stay in Sequoia NP and returning to San Francisco. This is the one Yosemite hotel we had not stayed in before, and we loved it. We booked a queen bed room with bath and were upgraded to a king with bath. The room was basic, but very comfortable. We enjoyed sitting outside on the veranda in the evening before dinner. The atmosphere was perfect- quiet, beautiful grounds, fountains, sense of an earlier time. We sat outside on the veranda for dinner. It was a great experience, good service, excellent food. We had read a variety of reviews from loved it to hated it and weren't quite sure what to expect. I can say we fell into the "loved it" group. I think people need to be aware of and realistic about what they will be experiencing when they stay at the Wawona... and by extension, in any national park lodging. Don't expect indulgent luxury, telephones, televisions, and in some places, WiFi. These are historic lodgings in wilderness areas. The idea is to be outside enjoying nature, not inside being entertained by media. As for prices... yes, the rooms are expensive and meals in the restaurants are expensive... there aren't a lot of lodgings within the parks, and supplies have to be trucked in, we understand that.

Room Tip: We were in a king bedroom with bath in the Washburn cabin

Visiting Yosemite NP, we stayed 2 nights at this historic hotel. We made our reservation 7 months before to make sure to receive a room with bathroom. We got a huge room with two queen and a single bed. The bathroom was very "historic". We think they should invest in updating the bathrooms while leaving the rest. At least a standard sink and mirror should be added - maching the price of the room rates.
Because all buildings are historic, the hotel is not very handicap-friendly: No Handicap-Parking close to any building, no elevators and only a few ramps. Steep stairs. But luggage assistance is offered and some rooms are on the 1st floor. The rooms don't have TV, Telephones or WiFi.
Very nice setting in a park. Swimming-Pool. Friendly and helpful staff.
The restaurant doesn't take reservations, but you can put your name down with the hostess and enjoy a drink at the bar while listening to the piano player. Restaurant is very nice, the food and service are good.
If you want a room for sure, make a reservation and for a room with bath make it early!

Room Tip: To be sure to get a room, make a reservation. Only a few rooms have a bath - if you want one, make t...

We would definitely stay at the Wawona again. Our room was basic but had everything we needed, the staff was very friendly, the grounds are just lovely, and we enjoyed the kid-friendly amenities like the pool and the pioneer museum. It was MUCH quieter and more mellow than staying in the valley floor. The setting is lovely and serene and provided quick access to the Mariposa Grove. Yosemite is a big park though and there was more driving than I might have liked from this location, but the quiet and charm of the southern section of the park made up for that. The food was expensive but very good. I do wish there was more of a common area for people to gather. The main building around the fireplace was packed with people waiting to get into the restaurant and there was really no place in the hotel to hang out with kids in the evening other than your room, which gets old pretty quick and undoubtedly adds to the noise factor for others.

I read all the mixed reviews of the Wawona before I planned our trip and still wanted to stay there. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed my stay. We arrived early enough in the afternoon to enjoy some quiet time on the veranda. Our room was located upstairs in the cottage directly behind the main building. It was quaint and charming with a window seat and no TV, radio or telephone to be a distraction, it was a perfect time to read my book. It was refreshing to "get away" from all that and enjoy the peace and quiet! Although ours was a "shared bath" and there were four other rooms on the second floor, I heard little noise and got a good night's sleep. I thought the food was very good in the dining room for dinner the night before and also for breakfast the following morning. If you don't have a love of or an appreciation for historic old hotels, then the Wawona is probably not for you. This isn't the Hyatt or the Ritz, nor is it intended to be. It's just a great example of the victorian age and I am glad it's still around to be enjoyed.
