“Beautiful Building”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 10, 2007

The Ahwahnee Hotel is beautiful and the views from the hotel are spectacular. It is very crowded in the valley and the roads around the hotel are congested. The hotel is a strange mix of first class amenities and lodge like design. There are several good hiking trails around the lodge and an active bus system helps in getting around.

  • Liked — Very clean and nice accomodations
  • Disliked — Eating options at hotel very limited and expensive

I experienced the same as other recent posters - this review refers to the cabins, not the rooms. The bad: at check-in, bathroom floor dirty, coffee pot not cleaned, tile grout very dirty, tile loose. Bathroom door would not close easily and walls were dirty. Spiders and other insect critters present. Newspaper didn't show up at room until almost 9 AM. The good - main facility is beautiful, nice valley location. I also stayed at the Yosemite Lodge for 1 night and Tenaya Lodge for 1 night. Yosemite Lodge best value given it's location and price. Tenaya by far the nicest facility - great restaurant, pool, facility looks newly renovated - but I prefer the convenience of the valley - and the "lodge" was adequate with food and the falls close by.

We spent two nights in a cottage at the Ahwahnee. We enjoyed the public rooms and the restaurant was terrific. But we were very disappointed in the cottage. The room was a bit shabby--for example, the door to the bathroom was falling off its hinges, one of the chest of drawers had rings on the top. Further, the service was less than stellar. Our bathroom was partially cleaned after the first day. Dirty towels were left on the floor and in the bathtub, the coffee maker was not cleaned. And after the front desk was notified, the problems were not adequately rectified. The dirty towels were still on the floor when we returned from dinner two hours later and the box of tissues had not been replenished as we had requested. All of this for over $400 a night.

  • Liked — The restaurant/dining room
  • Disliked — Physical condition of the room /maid service

We went to this historical hotel on 5/1 and stayed for two nights. I was there in '97 and somehow this time the hotel seems rundown and not that clean. The room doors are sticky and the carpet is not clean. The window screen in our room has a little hole so moths flied in....Anyway I would suggest anyone who wants to stay in Yosemite to have more observation than we did because The Yosemite Lodge where we boarded our Yosemite Tour coach looked not too bad and the price is 1/3 of the Ahwahnee.

Alright, seriously I was extremely worried about our reservations having read the reviews on this site. However, I was very pleasantly surprised and learned not to believe everything I read on the internet. ;)

The hotel lobby, great room, and bar are all amazing. Truly. The hotel has that old, charming feel (reminded me a lot of the Hotel Del Coronado).

We made our reservations 8 months in advance for our weekend. We checked in early, but were told our room was not quite ready. However, we were told our room number so we decided to see where we'd be. We found the room was right by the elevators. Concerned this would be noisy, we returned to the front desk and politely explained. The girl behind the counter was very polite and found another room that was available. This one was much quieter and had a better view.

Our room was gorgeous and very clean. The bathroom, which I had been concerned about after reading here, was spotless and was stocked with everything you might need or have forgotten. The king sized bed was super comfortable.

The walls are paper thin though. Fortunately we had quiet neighbors.

Thinking back on it now, each interaction with a staff member was truly a positive experience. Kudos for their customer service!

In fact, my only complaint with the whole experience is with the other patrons and day-visitors of the hotel letting their rude children run around like it was Disneyland. Seriously, folks, this hotel is not cheap, and it can quickly ruin a vacation for others when your child is out of control.

Just returned from a 3-night stay at the Ahwahnee. What a magnifent hotel. No glitz, no flat panel TV, not a Ritz Carlton or Disney World resort - rather the Ahwahnee is a splendid reminder of a long-ago era of grace and gentility that added tremendously to the grandeur that is Yosemite. My room was confortable and surprisingly spacious. The hotel staff was helpful, polite and efficient. And I got a real key rather than a hard plastic card. My stay was a true delight.

  • Liked — Its historical beauty.
  • Disliked — Food was average but expensive.
