“Location, Location, Location!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 5, 2013

We have stayed at this property on two separate occasions.

The main reason for staying at The Ahwahnee is primarily for the LOCATION. This is a 3-star hotel operation at a Five-Star-Location!

There are better accommodations in the YNP area, but you will need to drive 1 hour each way to stay there.

My recommendation is to stay at least ONE night at this iconic hotel. The brunch is quite reasonable, considering you're a captive audience.

This is a great place to stay while in Yosemite. Our room looked out to Yosemite Falls.People need to know the history to appreciate all the things that make it special. Our room was very clean and the bed was so very comfortable. The staff were friendly and helpful. We enjoy the afternoon tea and every room is a delight. Our room service breakfast was quick, hot and very good. For the first time our evening dining experience there was not as good as what we experienced in the past however our stay in this lovely hotel was again a great memory!

I knew little about the Ahwahnee, other than it was the Grande Dame of Yosemite. Because of my state of ignorance, I did not readily appreciate my surroundings when I arrived. Fortunately, there was a book in our room explaining the history of the hotel, how it was conceived, designed, situated, built, and decorated. By following the book and wandering about the hotel, exploring each new venue within a proper context, I discovered how I was engulfed in a piece of living history, revolutionary both in its time and now, contributing greatly to enjoyment of my stay. Though it may seem stodgy, dated, a little tatty in places, therein lies its charm: timelesness imbued by human effort with incredible class. It is an architectural masterpiece, and every square inch has been preserved to reflect the original intent of its designers. I came away enlightened, refreshed, and invigorated by my experience, and I wish the same for you.

Room Tip: Corner rooms have windows overlooking different sides of the forest.

Good morning BillyKmd,

It is very satisfying to know that you read the book, understood the significance of the hotel, experienced The Ahwahnee as the special place it is, and left with an appreciation of what it has to offer. I know that with the prices we charge comes the perception that we should be luxuruious opulance. But as you found out, that is not who we are; we are about "historical elegance."

As you can probably imagine, keeping up an 85 year old historic building in a National Park does have it's challenges. We realize that there may be some tatty places but know that we take our roles as stewards very seriously and are always working to address these areas.

Thank you for your kind words and we hope that you will not be a stranger.

Warm regards,
Brett Archer, General Manager

A group of us attended the Chefs Dinner at the Ahwahnee Hotel and originally made reservations at Yosemite Lodge due to the high cost of the Ahwahnee Hotel. We had previously stayed at both the hotel and the lodge and were not impressed by either so we went with the lower cost lodge for this trip. However, when confirming our reservation the day before departure, I ended up speaking with the concierge, Stephen, and asked about availability at the Ahwahnee. Initially, he said they could not accommodate 3 king rooms, but then offered us 3 cottages at a price of $250 per night per room. He transferred our reservation from Yosemite Lodge and we were extremely happy with our cottages. Our cottage consisted of 2 attached rooms, one room with a king bed and the other room with 2 double beds. There is an adjoining door if you rent both sides. As each couple wanted a king bed, we were in separate buildings close to each other. As it turned out, the rooms with the 2 double beds were all empty so each couple had the cottage to themselves. Other cottage buildings seemed to have different set-ups. Our buildings each had a private patio. We were in rooms 702, 704, and 706. The cottages are located just across the lawn area from the Ahwahnee lobby, nestled in the woods. Our cottages had the heat on when we arrived and we were easily able to control the temperature as needed. Each room was large with a comfortable king bed, a nice sized closet with a vanity area and an adequate sized bathroom with plenty of hot water. Small refrigerators were also in each room. The rooms were extremely quiet and we felt well worth the money (an additional $118 per room per night over the price at Yosemite Lodge). It was also well worth the additional price to be at the Ahwahnee for the Chefs Dinner events (3 per day) and not have to take the shuttle back and forth from the lodge. The price we paid at the last minute was much lower than the price quoted when the reservation was made several months ago so last minute reservations during an off season might allow for some good deals. After our experience in the cottages, we would not hesitate to stay there again and would select the cottages over the hotel rooms.

Arrived at 4 pm, and our room was not ready until almost 5 pm. We left our bags with the front desk to wait for access to our room, and it is now almost 5:30 pm and our bags have NOT arrived to our room. This is just coasting on an aura of the past and certainly not the service of a $275/night room.

This was a very expensive room and it would have been worth it if it had not been for the smell.
I stayed here during Thanksgiving weekend during one of my spontaneous adventures with my boyfriend. This was his first time in Yosemite so we really wanted an experience. They charge Four Seasons prices but the level of service is nowhere near it. The hotel staff wasn't rude but also wasn't pleasant.
However, it is a great experience because the hotel itself is beautiful with plenty of space to relax. The beautiful dining room was closing and reservations are suggested. We hung out in the bar lounge instead where there was an awesome piano player.... who closed shop like 10 minutes after we arrived. We had mediocre food and decided to just play cards near a fireplace.
When we got to our room, it smelled like air freshner. (There were so many reviews on YELP about a horrendous smell). We seemed to escape this "smell" but by 3:00am, it was like a skunk died in our room. By the morning, it was still there and we ended up waking early and just leaving for brunch. Brunch was excellent!
Besides for the smell, everything else was nice. And it's conveniently located to lots of nice trails.

We just spent a winter get a way weekend at the Ahwahee and could not have asked for nicer or friendlier service. Make dinner reservations early as possible in your trip or you will be stuck with a 5:45 dining slot since space is limited and much sought after.

Room Tip: We had a king lodge room but the cottages looked wonderful with fireplaces.
