“does not do the job!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2012

During a full week of holidays in California, we experienced no other accommodation as dreadful as this one. I had booked it with the impression that this was the ultimate experience. It turned out to be ultimate with a more literal meaning: never ever again!
Apart from its ideal location, the perfect spot in Yosemite, it deserves no positive comment, at least from our standpoint:
- the room was old fashioned, with amenities that do not match the standards to be expected in such a hotel;
- the personnel at the reception desk was doing their job, no specific personalised attention, very "I-am-paid-to-do-this-don't-ask-me-more" behavior;
- the restaurant looked great, but again, we were very disappointed by the service level, and the cuisine was closer to basic cooked food than anything else.
We had booked the room for 2 nights, we flew out after one night only. One positive comment though: they let us leave without arguing for the second night which should have paid, according to our booking. So nice of them!

Room Tip: The rooms overlooking the backyard are also overlooking staff and garbage: to be avoided at all cost...

I've been to Yosemite several times over the years but never in the Fall and especially late Oct/early Nov. but now I know what I've been missing. We stayed in cabin 719, which was old world charm extraordinaire. The wood burning fireplace in the cabin and unlimited wood, kindling, paper and fireplace cleaning service offering by the hotel was pampering to a new level!!! The cabin was extremely comfortable, spacious and light with so many large glass doors that opened to an expansive patio. If you do rent this cabin, be aware that there are two adjacent cabins on both sides that are only separted by doors that aren't sound proof:] The cabin is a short walk to the hotel and was such a treat to go back to every day to relax and get away from the crowds in the hotel. We were introduced to the rooms on the 6th floor of the hotel that sound extremely nice and luxurious, which we noted for future visits (The library room sounds perfect!). The food in the great dining hall was average at best and over priced but the experience and grandeur of the room was worth the price. The bar area off the main lobby of the hotel was not so cozy inside but sitting outside for lunch on the days we were there was spectacular. The great room in the hotel is a must see and experience with fireplaces big enough to walk in and comfy chairs and sofa's. There's plenty of sitting areas all around the room to enjoy how enormous the room is as well as the fireplace. Outside, the valley was filled with so much color from the leaves before they fall that it was a photographer's paradise. The Ahwahnee should be on anyone's bucket list. This is a special special place for all.

I stayed with my family for one night at the Ahwahnee. Being this central in Yosemite is amazing and a fantastic experience. The Ahwahnee is also quite impressive. Less impressive were the rooms which are very dated, it feels like they haven't been updated for at least 30 years, beds are small, carpets are really old, facilities are old, etc. Old can be charming, but not like this. The Service was an odd experience as well, we felt like being at an old east european establishment with staff being more focused on what their job is than on servicing customers, i.e. you somehow feel like disturbing them at their work. Dinner was quite nice. Overall, the Ahwahnee is highly overpriced and a great example of what lack of competition can lead to. I would recommend considering alternatives, I would not stay here again.

Mom and I stayed two nights in September. Our room was on the second floor, we had a terrific view out to the mountains; first thing in the morning we watched the deer graze. At breakfast we were seated at the 'honeymoon' table for two- right dead center in the picture window. The waitstaff were perfect - fun, friendly and very professional. The food was excellent. I had the trio of creme brulee for dessert at dinner and it was divine. High tea was a little skimpy - tea and cookies - but still delightful to sit in the parlor and enjoy the amazing ambiance. Concierge desk took care of our sightseeing tours and details with excellent service.
Yes, it was expensive, yes it was overpriced, and yes, it made our visit to this magical national park even more memorable.

This hotel is iconic, but don't go expecting spas and 5-Star dinning. Go with the intention of stepping back in time and soaking up the beauty of Yosemite and the Ahwahnee. The room rates are high, but worth the splurge, and it can be difficult to get in, but if you continue to call on a daily basis you can often time get in on a cancellation with short notice. Once there you will find friendly staff, beautiful views, very comfortable beds and rooms, and a great room and dinning room that will surely take your breath away. Please take the time to enjoy afternoon tea in the great room and a after dinner drink in front of the giant fireplace. It is the moments like this you will cherish. From the hotel you can easily walk to many of the valley locations that are seen on postcards, and you may even come across a critter or two. I have had the chance to stay here multiple times and each time I am in awe of the beauty which is Yosemite and the Ahwahnee!

Room Tip: Corner rooms are amazing, but most rooms have views of some sort. Truth be told you will not spend a...

At this price one expects the Very best. But tjis hotel is okay, not tops. Semi clean bathrooms and a very, very poor WIFI is just a few issues. Not enough bang for the buck. food is good but also very expensive.

Well, I was worried reading everyone's reviews about this hotel, but we found this hotel 5 Star all the way! We had a wonderful corner room for 3 nights in October. The bathroom was completely renovated, room had a very large LCD TV, refrigerator, and the maid left water bottles every day. Loved this "old" hotel, although it didn't feel old to us!

Guests hang out in the wonderful grand lobby listening to piano music by the huge fireplaces. It's a shame they must post signs for guests to act respectable, like "don't dry your socks on the fireplace". Also, saw many people with their feet on the antique furniture. One group spilled red wine on the floor & on the upholstered furniture & just left without notifying anyone. Such a shame!

Don't waste your time on the hotel tour, not much information & guide spent too much time showing pictures of people, asking "Do you know who this is?" You can learn more by watching PBS video of hotel.

Hotel also provides free coffee & hot cocoa every morning. You can get it free at night if you catch a nice bartender, which we did (Hook em horns!)
