“A grand historic hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2012

We stayed at the Ahwahnee for four nights in August. Having stayed at many other national park lodges and other historic hotels, we knew not to expect a modern, up to date hotel and a room with all the luxurious amenities that other expensive luxury properties offer. But we did find what we were hoping to at this hotel. While the rooms are not new they were quite comfortable. Also while it was not large, the room was larger than many rooms in luxury properties in Europe. A rollaway for our son fit easily. The balcony with a view of Glacier point was a bonus. The lobby and great lounge were grand spaces that felt both warm and comfortable as well as historic. We found the staff to be friendly and helpful, from the valets out front to everyone at the front desk. Mike was especially helpful with many questions and requests including telling my wife were to stand on the lawn in order to get cell phone coverage. I will talk about the dining room in a separate restaurant review but will say our experiences there were all good. We dined one night at the bar restaurant sitting outside. The food was tasty, especially the chili dog and caesar salad. The afternoon tea for guests served in the great lounge was also a treat.

All in all we felt we were staying in a grand hotel from another era. The fact that it is in such a beautiful and unique location only added to our experience. If you are looking for a modern, shiny hotel with all the perks, this is not the place for you. But if you are looking for the experience of staying in a hotel from another era that tries hard and mostly succeeds in providing a wonderful stay then you will not be disappointed. And the fact that it is right in the valley makes it especially convenient as well.

We spent 3 days at the Hotel. The room was spacious and very comfortable, but the view from the window was out of a postcard . We ate at the restaurant for breakfast and dinner. The atmosphere in the dining room is worth a visit. The service was excellent but the food was average for the price. The location of the hotel and the views around the hotel are excellent. If we ever return I hope to stay there.

Room Tip: choose a room that faces the granite cliffs....some even have balconeys

But that is not necessarily an upper league. Just do not compare the Ahwahnee to up market hotels elsewhere for comparable rates: the Ahwahnee will lose.....but still it is totally unique in its location, offering and history.

We stayed at the Ahwahnee many times (at least 6) in spring, summer and fall and enjoyed most of those visits very much. Rooms are old, well maintained but something between rustic, out-dated and charming. The main building ones do have airconditioning.

The best rooms are the "featured rooms" in the main building; we stayed in a corner room with balcony. Absolutely great. The outside cabins offer basically the same layout and amenities, but are suffer more from neighbour noise.

The truely weak point at The Ahwahnee is the staff. I have never felt welcomed by front desk; they were just carelessly doing their job. Only once I was greeted as a returning customer, a fact that was even forwarded to the restaurant staff; that feels great immediately!

The restaurant is too expensive for what it offers if compared to not-in-Yosemite-fine-dining-restaurants, but if compared to the garbage you get to eat in the rest of the valley....it is more than outstanding value-for-money.

This lodge was one of the nicest we've stayed in in the national parks. Lots of history. Great views. Great location. Great amenities. Comfortable beds and rooms. We ate in the dining room and had a wonderful meal.

Room Tip: We stayed on the top floor and felt we had privacy.

We had a suite as we were traveling with our 9 and 15 year old sons. Plenty of space for the 4 of us. Setting was perfect, worth paying the extra to be in the valley. Staff were great. Yes, the hotel is a little tired but it is also full of charm. Something that many 5* hotels lack. We were happy with the Ahwahnee and would definitely stay here again if we are lucky enough to visit Yosemite again.

Not inexpensive at about $40-50 per head, but if you have been hiking the High Sierras and the Panorama trail for a week, then there is surely no better way to spend the morning of your departure in luxury with a good conscience. Beautiful surrounding, sumptuous selection of all manner of breakfast preferences and culinary delights. The only problem is pacing oneself! We'll definitely go again (if we feel we deserve it!).

Nothing to dislike about this historic hotel. Perfect location to explore the park and very personable staff. A bit on the pricey side but everything is in the Park is as a whole. You have to book a year in advance normally ( we had a cancellation ) and people return year after year, which says it all really.
