If you would like to get your teens away from electronics for a little while definitely go here. At first I was hesitant finding that I had no service but I learned to enjoy it very much. We stayed in the cabin and it was a wonderful experience. This place also has two welcoming bison roaming around the hotel. Feel free to name them like we did.

The Lake View Hotel is a classically beautiful building, a real grande old dame. Looking through the windows the rooms inside look very nice and standard hotel rooms mostly occupied by tour groups and older travellers.

We stayed in the cabins which are like slightly posh sheds. NIce ensuite, no wifi and no TV. But wildlife EVERYWHERE. Nothing like walking over to the main hotel for a beautiful dinner with pianos tinkling in the back ground and finding a couple of buffalo in your way.

Staying here was a superb experience and cheaper than being in the hotel, but with the added benefits of being able to look at the beautiful building.

We ate in the restaurant each night which you must book for a sitting. This hotel is miles from anywhere so everything is preordered and some nights are booked months in advance. Despite us not knowing this, the staff fitted us in just fine and we spent most nights listening to a lovely pianist whilst playing cards with other travellers.

Staying here is like stepping back in time to a grander era. A fantastic experience all round.

We stayed in a one bedroom suite for 2 nights. The room was nice but, again small which is normal for the Yellowstone area. The staff was friendly and helpful. The surrounding area around the hotel was very scenic and we even seen a 2.5 year old grizzly bear cub - he liked the area and they rangers could not get it to leave but, it was not attacking people either.

We stayed in a cabin. It was warm and cozy. The kids loved to go out and hike. It was very clean and had great soap and coffee with a kreig maker. In the lobby of the main hotel there was a orchestra playing.

Room Tip: all the cabins looked the same.

We had a great day driving, saw lots of wildlife, and then checked into the cabin. We also had a very nice dinner at Lake Yellowstone Hotel. Any and all of these hotels and cabins are good but the lodges are the best.

Room Tip: no TV or internet from any of the Yellowstone rooms. This is all about wildlife so don't go exp...

As I always note in my Yellowstone accommodation reviews, there are multiple lodging types at each location in the park. This one is for the Lake Hotel Sandpiper Lodge, which was formerly known as the Lake Hotel Annex. Also at this location are Lake Hotel rooms and the Lake Hotel Frontier cabins.

It can be confusing to read other reviews in this group because they are describing different accommodations at this site and some reference cabins that are at the Lake Lodge, an entirely different property at the Lake Village.

The Sandpiper Lodge is a separate two-story building in between the Lake Hotel building and the Lake Hotel cabins. Here is a description of the rooms from the Xanterra website:

"The standard Lodge rooms have modern furnishings with one or two double beds and full bath. Telephone, coffee maker, fan and clock included in the rooms. Access to business center is included with all Lake Hotel rooms and cabins. Televisions, radios, and air conditioning are not available in park lodging."

The Lake area now has a new cell tower but it does not service all cell phone carriers. My Verizon phone had a strong signal in the Lake Village area.

The Sandpiper Lodge rooms have been remodeled over the years and while not luxurious, the room was more than functional. There is a table with two chairs and a dresser with the Keurig coffee machine. The sink is in the bedroom and the toilet and tub shower are in a separate room. The windows open for ventilation since there is no air conditioning.

The room was clean, as were the common areas of the Lodge. My room was on the second floor so I cannot address the issue of hearing footsteps from a room overhead. I did not hear any noise from adjacent rooms.

I usually stay in the Lake Hotel cabins when I'm in this part of the park but they were not available on short notice. The Sandpiper Lodge is a more economical option than the Lake Hotel rooms and I would stay here again if I couldn't get a Lake Hotel Frontier cabin.

A reservation at the Sandpiper Lodge qualifies you to make reservations at the Lake Hotel dining room at the time you book your room, rather than having to wait until 60 days before your stay. The Lake Hotel lobby, sun room, bar, deli, gift shop and restaurant are open to all Yellowstone visitors, not just those staying at the Hotel.

I have given this accommodation a Very Good rating, including value, based on comparing all accommodations inside Yellowstone National Park. The Park is not a resort, it is a huge wilderness with six tourist villages with mostly basic accommodations. (The newly remodeled Lake Hotel being the exception and the room prices reflect that.)

Staying inside the park can be more expensive than in the gateway communities but here at Lake Village you are a very short walk from the shore of stunning Yellowstone Lake and the Lake General Store (a great place for ice cream at the vintage soda fountain) and a short drive to many nearby points of interest.

Room Tip: A room on the second floor will ensure that you don't hear the sounds of footsteps from the room...

We spent two nights here on a trip from Rapid City to Jackson Hole. As we were driving from Gardiner (Yellowstone North Entrance) that day and taking in scenery on the way, we emailed the hotel to book dinner both nights for 20.00. When we checked in at about 18.30 we asked about our dinner reservations, as we had had no response to our email , which had, of course, been sent of necessity to Santerra central reservation department, rather than directly to the hotel. We were informed that they had made us reservations for both nights - for the second night the table was 20.30 in Lake Yellowstone Hotel but for the night of arrival (ie that same night) it was for 20.00 in Grant Village!!! Never having been to Yellowstone before we were told at 19.00 that our table was in a hotel we had never heard of that was 45 minutes drive away after dark!!! Needless to say an argument followed - reception told us it wasn't their problem, and that we needed to go to the Yellowstone Hotel restaurant and speak to them! They sorted it out and we were given a table at our hotel for 20.00. How this happened I cannot imagine, but it is pretty typical of our experiences with Santerra in various Parks over a number of years! Apparently they have been given the franchise for 25 years and appear not really to care about customer satisfaction - why should they, with a long-term monopoly on accommodation in National Parks?
That apart, the hotel was of a good standard: it is on the lake shore and the view at dawn and dusk was stupendous. Room was clean but no Wi-Fi (except at high cost - why can't Santerra provide free Wi-Fi for guests like almost every other hotel these days, especially considering their level of room charge - another money-making ploy I suspect.
Restaurant service was good and food excellent - buffet breakfast adequate, parking lot close and large. Usual problems of a large hotel with many guests - public rooms busy and noisy, but to be expected.

Room Tip: Upgrade to one facing the lake
