“pleasantly surprised”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2012

After reading reviews of the hotel being "standard" we were pleasantly surprised by the inn. Previously stayed in the Canyon area and this was much better. Rooms were nicely decorated, beds comfortable, clean bath. We did not hear any guest noise at night and I am a light sleeper. Yes, there is no tv and internet is expensive. Didn't bother us though. Lack of tvs means quieter rooms and having my 14 year old son asking me to play chess instead of being on his computer.....well, that's priceless.

Room Tip: third floor was nice and quiet

We were assigned a cabin when I made the reservations. What with park hotels closing, accommodations in mid-October are somewhat scarce, I guess. Expect unusually-high prices.

The room was quite large, with two queen (I think) beds. There was a table and there were a few chairs. Bathroom facilities were somewhat spartan but worked.

Here's what we learned - be aware if you make reservations at the cabins.

Nighttime is dark. Few outside lights. There is a bit of walk between main hotel and cabins. We didn't see any animals, but heard anecdotes of bears being around the week before, nearby.

Take a flashlight with you on the trip, and use it at night for the hotel-cabin walks.

Cabin rooms DO NOT - repeat - DO NOT have telephones. So one cannot just follow instructions to, say, dial 9 to reach the front desk. (Rooms in the hotel do have phones.) Cell phone coverage in cabins is spotty. (I had none, my wife had service - we do have different phones). When checking in (at the hotel, even for cabins), have hotel staff provide you with the direct dial-in number, the full ten-digit-with-area-code number. I had a heck of a time finding it and needed to do some detective work and make other calls to find it. I had trouble finding it in hotel material provided in the cabins.

We had some onging housekeeping problems but the hotel customer service people really did try to resolve them. They finally did.

This was our second stay in the Western cabins near Old Faithful Inn. It's a perfect location -- just a short walk to the lovely lobby at the Snow Lodge -- and a slightly longer walk to the incredible Old Faithful Inn (which hosts a really good restaurant) and, of course, Old Faithful itself. Walking and hiking is spectacular. We love visiting the park in the fall -- other tourists are at a minimum and game viewing is prime. The Western cabins are simple -- two beds, a table and two chairs, a basic sink area with separate room for bath/shower/toilet and a large closet. They also have two large screened windows that open to let in the crisp fall air (and there is electric heat if the air is a little too crisp!) The Western cabins are roomy, bright and spotlessly clean. With a longer stay (e.g., 4+ nights), you're likely to be assigned one of the fringe cabins -- nicer because you have fewer neighbors. Last year, I was sitting on the porch when a herd of bison ambled through, flowing around the cabin like it was an island in a river. How cool is that!

We stayed here two nights at the end of September. The hotels in the park are a bit pricey, but, it is so convenient to be close to everything. The room was clean, comfortable and roomy. The decor was "western simple". Front desk staff members and housekeeping staff were very friendly and helpful. A negative - wifi was expensive. Given the rate of the room, you would expect free wifi. The location is great...a quick walk to Old Faithful, the visitors center and all the activities. The lobby is welcoming, with a nice fireplace and a comfortable seating area.

We stayed for the last three nights of the season so nothing much was open, but even so we still had a lovely time. The location is fantastic, with only a short walk to the upper geyser basin and just off the lower grand loop road. The lodge itself looks lovely and is charmingly decorated, with a big open fire in the lobby. We stayed in a double queen bed room, which was a good size, very clean and well-laid out. There was no TV, which we found to be a plus. The only problem with the room is that wifi is charged extra and is very expensive.

Food was served in the Obsidian restaurant and was very tasty. There was usually a wait for dinner, particularly if you went later in the evening, but the wait was never too long and the hotel has a good system in place for letting you know when a table is ready.

The accommodation is certainly expensive, but is worth it for the great location. For a special few nights, we found this to be good value.

The cabin was clean, comfortable and very spacious. It was quiet as well. You could hear the showers of your neighbours but all got quiet to the right time. Staff was very friendly and helpful. The forecourt could be made a bit more attractive. It was just gravel all around.

I found this to be the best lodging in the park. Since the hotel is so new, the rooms are nice and clean. No air conditioning in the park so be prepared to be a bit warm at night. Nice bench to stop and put shoes off and on when you first walk in the room. Mini-fridge is nice. Yes, lodging isn't cheap and you are paying for the location, but for us it was worth it.

Restaurants in this area aren't that great. The fast food joint in this hotel is pretty awful; service is really bad. The main dining in this hotel is very average. The food at the Old Faithful Inn was not that great for the expensive price. The food in the cafeteria was awful.

I am surprised by the complaints of no internet, TV, etc. In our experience, many national park lodges don't offer these type of amenities. If you are a person who cannot disconnect for a few days, you may want to avoid the national parks. The lodging and food are overpriced, amenities sparse, etc, but that is the price, minor in my opinion, to pay to be in the thick of nature.
