Fourth of July would just not be the great holiday it is without a trip to the Vienna Inn. A Northern Virginia tradition for decades, Hubby and I have been coming here since we first met – 34 years ago. We always get the chili dogs with onions and mustard – what is it with people who like cheese in all that? Splitting an order of the delish shoestring fries (have to get them without seasoning for Hubby, the wimp) and either a cold draft beer or soda. Disclosure: We have never had anything else other than the chili dogs. When we lived in the Shenandoah Valley for a few years, we still would drive to Vienna Inn for our chili dog fix. However, as we sit, waiting for our dogs, chops slobbering in anticipation, we do notice that the food hitting the other tables looks dang good.
Vienna Inn does not put a lot of capital into appearance. It caught fire several years ago, closed for renovations, and looked exactly like it did the hour before the fire started. No one shows you to your table, you just eyeball a table and make a bee-line for it. The wait staff are all high school or college students. (I do miss that rough-tongued older waitress; she certainly could keep her dining room in order.) Don’t ask for a check. It’s the honor system here. After eating just go to the cashier and recite what you ate. Please remember to leave something in the tip jar for your server.
Darn. Now I’m back thinking about those chili dogs. I wish they were closer to Old Town!
