“Lovely evening, delicious dinner.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2013 via mobile

Tried Rumis for the first time tonight. All 4 enjoyed our meal. Everything we ordered was delicious. Samara provided wonderful service and was beyond patient as we lingered over tea and coffee well past closing time. They never made us feel rushed even though we lost track of the time.

“Disappointed”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 10, 2013

We expected too much of Rumi's, maybe because of the name, and maybe after years of dining at the now-disappeared Panjshir II. The intimate atmosphere of the upstairs dining room is inviting, and the server, a partner in the venture, does her very best to please...and pretty well succeeds. But the food, though prepared with the finest of ingredients, falls too short of excellent to entice us for a return engagement. It has been quite a few months since we tried this restaurant, so my recollection is incomplete and somewhat hazy. But I recall that the rice, an important feature of an Afghan meal, was too greasy and not at all subtly flavored with spices to the point of being unpleasant. The lamb was acceptable, but not outstanding. I don't do well with long flights of stairs because of a hip pain, and the mediocre meal just didn't tempt me to try for a return visit. Pity, though, because the owners are trying so hard to make a go of it, and they are so much more gracious than the snooty staff of Nizam's that used to occupy the building.

“Outstanding Ambiance, Fantastic and Exotic Food!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 14, 2013

My wife and I enjoyed a lovely and intimate dinner at Rumi's Bistro on the night before Valentine's Day. We brought our own wine and they charged a modest $10.00 corkage fee. The space is an intimate little room above a casual dining kabob place that they operate downstairs. I presume it shares a kitchen with the kabob place.

The space is very nicely decorated with a large and striking Indian or Afghan carpet (looked Kashmiri to me, actually), purple walls, and a nice use of wooden dividers and fabric hanging from the ceiling. Great menu with nice appetizers - we had a combination plate which came with babaganoush, pumpkin, chick peas, and spinach served with wonderful, freshly baked flat bread. We shared a delicious tomato and feta salad which was served stacked in a balsamic vinegar-based sauce, and our main courses were the daily special - a delightful and spicy pomegranate lamb, and a chicken kebob served on a bed of two kinds of rice and served with chick peas. Our waitress was very sweet and efficient, and a native of Kabul. She tempted us with a wonderful piece of chocolate cake for desert. I understand the venue does private events and that there is a belly dancer from time to time. This is just a real fun place with excellent and exotic food and great service and hospitality. We will be regulars from now on,

Oh - though we brought our own wine, they had a nice wine list with decent bottle prices, and they had Efes beer in bottles on the menu too - one of my favorites from Turkey.

“Afghan Experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 31, 2013

We've eaten twice at Rumi's and will return often. The young owners have cleverly created two eateries in one building - Kabob Tavern, which is downstairs and very informal/casual, and Rumi's Bistro, which is a beautifully appointed restaurant upstairs. The sumptuous dark purple decor transports you to Afghanistan. The service is excellent - very attentive without being obtrusive. The owner served us both times and she seems to instinctively know when you need something. The food is delicious. We split a dish as the portions are very generous! Vienna has a lot of great restaurants and Rumi's is another one to add to the list. We're so pleased we discovered it and would highly recommend it to anyone. Great for couples looking for quiet, intimate surroundings.
