We expected too much of Rumi's, maybe because of the name, and maybe after years of dining at the now-disappeared Panjshir II. The intimate atmosphere of the upstairs dining room is inviting, and the server, a partner in the venture, does her very best to please...and pretty well succeeds. But the food, though prepared with the finest of ingredients, falls too short of excellent to entice us for a return engagement. It has been quite a few months since we tried this restaurant, so my recollection is incomplete and somewhat hazy. But I recall that the rice, an important feature of an Afghan meal, was too greasy and not at all subtly flavored with spices to the point of being unpleasant. The lamb was acceptable, but not outstanding. I don't do well with long flights of stairs because of a hip pain, and the mediocre meal just didn't tempt me to try for a return visit. Pity, though, because the owners are trying so hard to make a go of it, and they are so much more gracious than the snooty staff of Nizam's that used to occupy the building.
