I recently saw a matinee of Mamma Mia on 7/3/11. Even though we had amazing seats and the show was incredible, a couple of things nearly ruined the whole experience:
1. The heat--this sounds silly, but you have no idea how hot 90+ degrees will seem until you're in it and trudging up the hill. It felt like misters or fans came on for about 20 seconds during the second act, but nothing after that. I can't imagine how hot the poor people on the lawn were in the direct sun.
2. The aforementioned "trudge up the hill". Even if you're parked in the closest lot, you've got quite a hike to get to the actual amphitheater. If the sun is beating down on you or you're not in comfortable shoes, you might be better off having someone drop you off through the handicapped roundabout. I'm surprised more elderly people didn't keel over in the heat.
3. The traffic afterwards was pretty disorganized. Granted, everyone was hot and cranky, but no one in the closer parking lot was paying any attention to lanes or common courtesy. It took us about 25 minutes to actually get out of the area, back onto the toll road.
All of that aside, the show was magnificent, lunch at Ovations was great (the chocolate mousse was really delicious) and I don't regret going. Next time, I'll bring a frozen blue ice in my bag, my own frozen bottled water, and some frozen washcloths.
