“What a shock”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 19, 2012

I usually only review a B&B if they were really bad or really good, so I had to comment on Smith Fargo Suites. The place is gorgeous, and really, really comfortable. An old building can have poor air-conditioning or tiny, old baths. Not Smith Fargo. Each bedroom has both ac and a ceiling fan. The baths are large, and each is a work of art - a soaking tub, plus a state-of-the-art shower, and a very artsy vanity. Each suite has a huge flat-screen TV in the sitting room. The Miners' Suite had the most comfortable bed I've ever slept in. All beds are kings, except the Oriental, which is round. The common kitchen is better than what most people have at home, and the refrigerator and cupboards are stuffed with breakfast items - you just help yourself. Should you want a real milkshake, there is a triple shake machine, plus all the fixings. This is in addition to the frig and microwave in each suite. Oh, and the price was $99. If you are going to Mt. Rushmore or Crazy Horse, this is worth a couple of extra minutes on the road; it's really not that much farther than Custer.

Thanks to other reviews here, we knew that you have to get the keys in the antique store right at the corner of the building and you should arrive during office hours. After we go our keys, Dick showed us our suite (the miners suite) which was very spacious and had a great decor.

We enjoyed our stay very much and the price is really reasonable when compared to other alternatives. The place is not a hotel in a strict sense with lobby, restaurant room service etc. and for breakfast you just have to help yourself in the shared space (a big kitchen, tables etc.) where lots of food was available.

Room Tip: Arrive during office hours, parking accross the street available

Staying at this hotel was unsatisfactory. On the night of our arrival - at 6pm, so not terribly late - we found the doors of the hotel and the adjoining antique store locked. We tried to call the number listed on the window, to no avail. After considering what to do (move to a different hotel?), my wife found our registration documents and room keys in a mail box at the other door to the antique store. So, we moved in. The room was cluttered as expected and decorated consistent with the unique decor of the hotel. A musty odor permeated the building and the room. Everything was clean, though, and the bathroom/appliances were modern. We knew that breakfast was included, but when we left the room at around 7am the next morning there was nobody in the kitchen/breakfast area. We learned from another guest who appeared a little later that we should just help ourselves, which we did. When we returned from our excursion that evening, the hosts were not there, either. Same thing next morning. We only met the "hosts" upon check-out. They were largely uninterested in our comments about the lack of information.

You get to the place and the first thing you see is this junk shop and you go in and inquire as to the location of Smith Fargo Suites and the proprietress this is it and you look around and begin to wonder what have we gotten ourselves into? Then she (Liz) gets his (Dick's) attention and he escourtes you to the long stairway between the shop and the next business. He takes the personal stair elevator thing and we follow. You get to the top of the stairs and you're in their own personal art work. Each room has a theme and each one is unbelievable. What you don't realize fully is that the "junk" shop downstairs is their (largely Liz's) palet. When you're a collector and don't want to be a horder you have to put your collected items somewhere where they will be useful. So far, I've only mentioned the physical aspect of the place. This couple is as down to earth as anyone you'd hope to meet. In very understated ways they make you feel very welcome and at home. The open kitchen where you can cook your meals is very amean-able and Their idea of a continental (not their choice of words) breakfast is extraordinary. This has to be experienced to be believed, and I'm still trying to wrap my mind around it. Like a very old commercial once said, "Try it, you'll like it." And you will. Dick & Liz are a sweet couple.

Room Tip: Every room is unique. Maybe you'll get lucky enough to get a grand tour and then you can take yo...

These suites are located above an antique store on the main street in Hot Springs. Parking is on either side of the street. This is an interesting set-up, with the suites on either ends of a hallway, and a common kitchen/dining area. We had the Victorian Suite and the beds were comfortable. The bathroom (shower only, no tub) was beautifully remodeled. Breakfast & coffee are set out for you, help yourself to anything. Hosts were genuinely friendly people. We loved the quiet and respectful nature of the other guests. This is not a chain-motel. This is not the place for unruly children (antique furnishings throughout) or all-night party animals. We are glad we stayed here and would love to return someday.

We loved this place! Very easy to find. Very clean. Very friendly. Much better than a hotel. We had the Miners suite for the 3 of us. King size bed with memory foam was super comfy. The bedroom is spacious with its own love seat and coffee table. Living room has sofa couch with memory foam topper, also very comfy. Large flat screen tv on wall with Dish Network. Large bathroom with garden tub, separate shower, electric flush toilet, and heated tile floor. Very cool! Remote control ceiling fans and combo AC/heater which is new and efficient. Building constructed in 1910 and evidence of times past is seen throughout while still having modern convience. Door frames and hardware all original. We spent about an hour just checking the place out. Common kitchen close to rooms and stocked with lots of food for snacking and for breakfast. Dick surprised us and cooked an awesome breakfast! Very gracious host! Bring stuff to cook for supper! There is grocery store nearby. Also, the China Buffet restaraunt is just steps away and fantastic with no MSG. Would love to stay again. All the rooms have nice themes and are all different. Notable mention too is a lift chair to get either yourself or your luggage up the stairs as the rooms are all above the store. Place felt safe. There is a door at bottom of stairs that locks also and you have the key to that door too. Enjoy. :D

A very interesting boutique hotel with themed rooms and wonderful owners. We stayed in the 'miners' suite which had a king size bed and huge corner tub. It was nice having a separate bedroom and sitting area. There's also a large screen TV in each room with satellite. Breakfast was just help yourself - cereal, fruit, etc. The rooms are on the second floor of an old sandstone building in downtown Hot Springs, with a huge antique store underneath that the owners also run. Our stay ended up costing us more than expected as my wife kept finding things to buy in the antique store! I recommend this hotel, it's excellent value and a nice break from chain hotels.
