I had expected the Mammoth site to be interesting, but I was amazed by it. To stand in a real dig and to see the work ongoing was beyond my expectations. The crew chief stopped to talk to us about what they'd found, and even those working on the dig would answer questions.
I signed my son up for the Jr Paleo dig. It was also better than expected. They didn't just dig in the dirt, they had lots of bones buried for them to dig up. They used the same tools as the workers on the dig. The children teamed up to dig up large bones and their excitement was infectious. The guides encouraged them, answered their questions and made it a very rewarding experience. It was the highlight of our 5 day trip.
This is a real dig, with layers upon layers of mammoths and other fossils. Where else in the world can you see something like this, in a controlled environment! We were told they had just uncovered an 'unknown' animal and everyone was very excited as they were searching for clues.
Of course we brought home a 'mammoth' stuffed animal from the gift shop, but we also brought home a child with an interest in paleontology!
