“Home Town Family Vacation”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2014

My husband and I are from Cincinnati and love to vacation there and show our kids the city. We have stayed at this hotel twice and have not been disappointed. Yes, the place could use some updating. But for the convience of an apartment style hotel room in that location with a family. You can't beat it! The prices are great for the space, which gives us more money to do all the attractions the city has to offer. Who stays in their hotel room for their vacation anyways?! Many years ago this building used to be apartments. We will definately being staying next summer for another family vacation.

Room Tip: Get a room with the balcony... worth the extra money for a little outdoor space.

My husband and I typically stay here as a couple but we decided to bring three children with us this time...ages 4, 15, and 16. We figured with the full kitchen, it would be best to cook in the hotel and have snacks readily available. It worked out well. We cooked breakfast both mornings, though half of the eyes on the stove didn't work. We were also limited to plate service for 4, so in hindsight, I wish we'd brought plastic ware.

We arrived on Thursday night and took the older two on a college visit to the University of Cincinnati. The college is about 15-20 minutes drive. We returned to the hotel for a nap then walked down to the area called the Banks near the Great American Ball Park. It was about a 15 minute walk downhill, past Paul Brown Stadium (where the Bengals play) and the National Underground Freedom Center. We ate and hung out down there while the Reds were playing. We heard that at times the Reds sell $5 game tickets, but they were sold out by the time we got there (which was VERY late in the game). Instead, we went down by the water and watched the post-game fireworks and were able to follow the crowds back to our hotel. When you book through hotels.com, you get free parking validation, which is nice, though the walk to the parking garage is long, winding, and doesn't appear to be the safest.

Room Tip: When you book through hotels.com, you get free parking validation.

Thank your for the 4 star review. We are happy that you are a loyal guest of our hotel and are pleased to know that you enjoyed your stay with us! We agree that our hotel is great when traveling with the kids as we are so close to the Reds stadium and all the fun things to do and see and the multiple bedrooms and 3 TV's come in very handy at night as the kids (or your spouse) get their own TV. Thanks again for your continued patronage! We appreciate your business very much! Please do not hesitate to call me before you make your next reservation as I will be happy to handle any special requests personally. Sincerely, Mick Douthat, GM - cell 513.728.5394

Stayed in a jr penthouse suite. The space was huge! The patio off the bedroom was great for city views! The rooms were very clean. But definitely needed to be updated.

The staff was friendly and helpful, too.

Tip: park at the Garfield parking garage on yr own....$6 and you can access the garage from a stairwell from the hotel

I stayed one night in Cincinnati and while I had a great time I doubt I would stay at this hotel again. I think the worst part is this place has the potential to be a great hotel but has been let fall down by whomever owns it. We had a 2 bedroom suite that looked like it was stuck in the 80s. I normally do not pay much attention to the esthetics however the wall paper was peeling, the bath tub didn't drain properly, didn't look like the tub had been scrubbed in ages and what hotel has picture tube TV's anymore? I will say that the location is amazing it was close to the ball park, and even had a shuttle that drove us there. However, the day were there a murder occurred right outside the front door of the hotel. I could have stayed at much nicer hotel in the same price range.

Room Tip: Doubt I would give it a second chance, unless it were renovated!

My buddy and I chose Garfield Suites because our room was actually a two bedroom apartment, and it was within walking distance to the Cincinnati Reds baseball stadium. In addition to the expansive accommodations, the hotel offers a free shuttle to the ballpark. All this, for a very reasonable price.

Upon arrival, we were concerned about the neighborhood. The street corners around the hotel had people just standing there like they were waiting for something. There was also a group of about 20 people assembled in the small grassy area called Piatt Park.

We were scheduled to attend two night games during our stay. Because the shuttle operated only until 10 PM, we would have to walk the mile back to the hotel each night. I asked the shuttle driver if it was safe. He assured us that Cincinnati was absolutely safe and that we would have no trouble after the game. That night, people were still hanging out in the park, but no one bothered us.

The next day my buddy told me he was awakened in the middle of the night by a symphony of sirens. “That was a lot of sirens for such a safe neighborhood.” We later learned that one of those people hanging out in the park was shot and killed overnight.

Despite the tragedy, I resolved to resume my vacation and return to the ballpark for game 2. Surely there would be a visible police presence around the hotel because of the previous night’s murder. Sure enough, as we approached the hotel after the game, police cars were all over and Piatt Park was roped off with that yellow “Crime Scene” tape.

Sadly, that police presence was in response to two more shootings that took place 45 minutes before we got there!!!!

Garfield Suites is an excellent hotel. Unfortunately, it’s next to a park where law and order decided to vacate for two days.

Spent 1 night here with 4 co workers for a Reds Game. We ended up getting a 3 bedroom suite instead of the 2 bedroom suite we had reserved, without an up charge. This was nice and it meant nobody had to take the couch. There was a full kitchen in our suite if we had wanted to cook something, but the fridge was plenty big to stock up our drinks ! It was not a bad walking distance to the stadium either. We had a nice view of downtown from our balcony. We found this hotel 1 week prior to going down with an awesome internet deal for a weekend stay. Would definitely stay again !

A family member was at Christ Hospital~1.5 miles & we found this hotel very easy to get to. If not for that, it would have been great location to visit museums, historic sites, stores & even the Red’s Stadium. My sister & I stayed in a 2 room suite on the 12th flr. The cost w all taxes was cheaper than 2 separate rooms in the downtown area. The rooms need an update from the 70’s decor, but the suite was very clean & comfortable. The living room had couch, lounge chair, desk, TV and a balcony with a great view! The sliding glass door was heavy, but we could negotiate its use. Took lots of pictures!
With a full kitchen & dishes, we were able to prepare breakfast & dinner; eating lunch around the area. We did not eat at the hotel restaurant, but there was always someone dining when we went in & out. A lovely little park with shaded archway & tables by the statue of President Garfield, across from the hotel’s entrance, looked like a favorite break spot for the local business people.
The only bad feature was returning to the 9th St parking garage after dark. They have security people patrolling the garage, but it's still unnerving going through the MAZE of stairs & hallways to get back to the hotel. Park by the elevator/stairway. To avoid the MAZE, You can take the elevator to street level and walk around the corner to the Hotel entrance. Parking is free, but you MUST get your ticket validated at the front desk, & you Must exit within 15 minutes of validation.

Room Tip: Parking is free, but you MUST get your ticket validated at the front desk, & you Must exit withi...
