I must have drove by Habanero at least 500 times before finally stopping in. On the outside it looks like the bland, tired burrito restaurants that have followed in Chipotle's wake. On the inside was a fresh, friendly neighborhood hangout that's full of vibe, charm and most important flavor.
My first time eating here I was taken aback by the amount of fresh, house-made salsas and sauces. I tried maybe a half dozen salsas, all of which had it's own unique flavor and heat level. It was easy to to see that all the ingredients were hand cut, no corporate 'bags' here. I also tried 4 sauces, the habanero-mango was a revelation.
My better half had a chicken burrito that was made to order, with her choice of toppings. It was plainly obvious the chicken wasn't from the night before, or even the prior shift, it just got pulled off the grill, diced and placed in the in the steam-table. Combined with rice and both pinto and black beans, she was ready for the cold toppings. She likes mild food so it was salsa verde and a run through the garden(lettuce, tomato, red onion, cilantro, grilled peppers and avocado. Toped off with sour cream and cheddar cheese, the burrito was so big it could barely be folded.
I had 4 tacos all of which were different. The meat selection is quite impressive Steak, Chicken, Barbacoa, Marinated Pork, Habanero Beef, fried Talapia and others. I paired the flavors together, mild with mild and spicy with spicy. Topped it off with some house made chips and salsa and a couple of shaken Margaritas, it was a feast to say the least.
The staff is as friendly as you will find anywhere, always going out of their way to ensure your taken care of. The prices are quite reasonable, particularly on Tuesdays when tacos are only $2 and they have $2 Dos Equis Amber. They also offer a lunch special for under $8 that includes a burrito or 2 tacos, chips & salsa and a drink.
We enjoy this place so much, my wife on her 40th birthday wanted to eat there. Not at The Precinct, not across from the Arinoff, she wanted to eat at Habanero.
So if you're tired of the bland food at Chipotle or wanna light that fire with a habanero Beef burrito, this place has what your looking for.
