“High hopes, high prices, highly disappointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 2, 2013

Six of us were very excited to try this new seafood adventure. Cool place, very un-Cincinnati feeling in an area that I was WISHING had valet parking (I'm not usually a fan, but on a cold, wet night in this part of town, it would have been nice). Brussel sprouts were definitely the highlight of the night. Fish dishes didn't thrill anyone and the scallops were fine. Prices seemed very high and none of us will be anxious for a return trip. They forgot the side-dishes, which was very strange. Even water glasses weren't refilled.

“Oyster Heaven”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2013

Oyster lovers paradise! Fresh, many varieties , best outside of Chicago. Menu is also up to par. Pricy but worth it for the seafood crowd.

“STOP! GO HERE IMMEDIATELY !!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2013

Am I actually in Cincinnati? Or, put another way, .... "Toto, we're not in Kansas City anymore!" OK, actually, The Anchor is really not that extraordinary; but it IS way way good. We went for an early lunch. The menu is 98% fish or seafood. There are specials. It IS pricey, but for the quality of what you are getting, out here in our beloved Pigsville, it works! The clam chowder was of the proper heft and texture, not floury, it was naturally thickened through reduction of the liquid. There were MORE clams, and large chucks, not minced bits, but more clams than potatoes. That cannot even reliably be said of clam chowders up east, in New England. I know, I lived there. Once in New York we had a lunch of mashed potatoes and spaghetti (2 different dishes, but this WAS our lunch), odd we'll acknowledge, but it WAS at Atelier de Joel Robuchon, if you were there you'd understand, mysteriously it worked and it's a lunch we've never forgotten. The Anchor surely isn't comparable to L'Atelier dJR, but still, we had, essentially, potatoes and rice for our lunch (the clam chowder and then an order of ??? Brussels Sprouts risotto ???) and it too worked in that same mysterious way. The risotto was creamy, not too light, not too heavy, studded with minced B-sprouts, yellow squash, red onion, and finished with generous slices of excellent Parmigian cheese. Being a "foodie" we were shocked that we were not ordering a fish or seafood dish, but were totally sated by the chowder and risotto. The accompanying oyster crackers were 'artisan' quality and delicious. My companion for lunch had scrumptious shrimp tacos, with good sized shrimp you could actually see! The problem, and there is one: too many other items on the menu, plus the specials, that we wanted to try and could not. So, notwithstanding the ultra-simple, 'oyster house-y ambiance (i.e., very little but enough), WE SHALL RETURN! SOON! The new vibe of the new Over-The-Rhine neighborhood, where The Anchor resides, is part of what makes the simple interior effective. But it is the extremely excellent flavors of the food, accompanied by the friendly and warm service, which make The Anchor, for what it is ...an oyster and fish house ... excellent. Gourmet, No! Way way above Average, Yes! P.S. - they do offer a burger on the menu, do not remember any fowl. Finally, we suggested management put a 'representative' menu onto the almost information-free website. GO NOW, The Anchor is excellent!

“Fresh seafood! Great oysters!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 9, 2013

Mmmm... our dinner at The Anchor was great... There was a great selection of oysters and they were fresh & sooooo good! I had the lobster pot pie (AWESOME!) and my husband has a whole filet of snapper thai style. Everything was delicious! For dessert.. banana pudding & blueberry crisp. YUM! All around great dinner. My only complaint is that their wine pours are teeny tiny, especially for such large wine glasses! But the overall wine/beer/cocktail selections are great.

“Great food poor location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 31, 2013

First of all The Anchor is on 1401 Race St.. Not the best area of town. That being said the Sea food and atmosphere was great. The staff was friendly and helpful. Make reservations, they open at
5 pm for Saturday. Their specialty is seafood and they don't let you down. The prices is a little high. If you want to eat cheap go to McDonald's. Lobster roll was about $24 bucks. We had fried oysters for and they were great, the homemade tater sauce was out of this world. They have a fine wine selection and have about 5 styles of draft beer. WE WILL GO BACK. I am not from Cincinnati, live a little north. We arrived at 6 pm and was told there was a 2 hour wait for a table. I think there was a event at the Music Hall, this was the reason for the crowd. We were able to eat at the bar. The bartenders were very friendly and would talk to you. The owners are on premises, any problems you can talk to them and it will be taken care of. I GIVE THIS PLACE 5 STARS.
