“And they play music too!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 19, 2012

The Blue Wisp Jazz Club is a Cincinnati institution recently relocated and expanded, with a restaurant component added, not patronized nearly enough, and deserving of your (1) consideration followed by your (2) patronage. And it is very good, a most satisfying evening. We are not talking haute cuisine here, but the food within its diverse categories is excellent, ample, and a superiorily excellent value. The drinks are generous, and the service is enthusiastic, responsive, caring, fast, ......... what more can be said?

On to the music: that's what The Blue Wisp really is known for. It's mostly jazz of all kinds and styles, but we recently attended a wonderful program of young opera singers. How great to be dining and listening to top quality live music. Their collection of jazz CD's is also enormous, deep, and diverse.

There are two large rooms, one is the vast bar with lots of stools and large screen TV's, tables around the perimeter for diners, then there is the adjoining show room, very typical of jazz clubs from New York, Chicago, and San Francisco, low ceiling, can be made dark even with the windows out to the street, a good jazz room.

Overall, going to the Blue Wisp is fun, can be very romantic if you are so inclined, is casual, the food is very good. It's a big step up from the former location, it's a very good restaurant. We're going to go more often, why don't you?

“Jazz + Food + Drink = Fun Times”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 9, 2012

Visited The Blue Wisp's Rosemary Clooney Room for a special performance during the World Choir Games. The crowd was huge, but what was important was the music, which was amazing, and the food, which was plentiful and although not overly creative it was good, and the drink which was refreshing, sizeable, and - in this case - creative.

Based on the recommendation of others who have been to The Blue Wisp under more typical circumstances, the food and drink are more than likely better than what I experienced. Between that as well as great music on a consistent basis, The Blue Wisp definitely deserves a better-than-average rating.

“Be entertained in a relaxing atmosphere”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 1, 2012 via mobile

I have always wanted to go to a jazz club, and this was my first experience doing so. I had very little pre conceived ideas so I don't know how to compare this club. However here are a few of my thought...

Location is good. Just a couple blocks from fountain square. We felt safe walking from there at 11pm. There were still a good bit of people out at this time.

Cover charge was $10pp. Not sure how that measures up to others? It was fine for us.

Food was good but all we had was dessert and drinks. Service was punctual even though we were in a darker room, etc.

The only 'complaint' I had was the seating was odd. Basically this is a large fairly open room with a small stage. Most of the seating was sort of temporary and seems to me like they probably move it around a lot or change it for different activities. The reason I say this is all the chairs on the floor were basic metal framed chairs with a little cushion, similar to what you might find at a hotel conference or something. Very very basic. And most tables seemed like small card or utility tables with a cloth dropped over. I did expect more permanent seating like strong, nice wooden chairs or more comfortable seating.

We sat along the back wall which was nice. None of this is a huge deal, I just expected a little different seating type.

The place was pretty full, maybe 50-75 people?

The atmosphere was perfect for relaxation. Candle lot, dim lighting. Street view of the city. Wonderful.

And the music was great!!

This was a perfect way to unwind after a busy day and after dinner. We sipped coffee and ate cake and enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere and entertainment.

I will definitely go back!

“Surprisingly great food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2012

We ate at the Blue Wisp only because we had theatre tickets for Cincinnati Shakespeare and we were running late. It's situated across the street. The menu posted outside doesn't seem very exciting but we needed to eat so we went in. We were not greeted but eventually someone came and seated us. By this point we were sure to be disappointed. Our server, Marissa, was adorable and charming. She gave us great recommendations and checked on us frequently. When we asked to split a bowl of gumbo rather than order two, she brought out two bowls for the price of one. The main dishes were very flavorful and the portions were generous to say the least. We finished our meal with absolutely delicious bread pudding. When Marissa asked if she could box up our leftovers, we explained we had nowhere to put them while we went to the show. She very sweetly offered to keep them in the refrigerator for us and we were able to retrieve them afterwards. So, atmosphere was lacking (though there was live jazz and a poetry jam later in the evening) but the food was one of the best meals I have had downtown.
