Twice, that is how many times I was at Maple Counter in a week. I was really looking forward to its arrival in Walla Walla. My first visist was for breakfast with family and the second, also with family, was for lunch.
The building is beautiful! It is an old auto service shop that they have done a fabulous job of remodeling for the cafe. It is warmly decorated and executed in a way to save much of the open beam beauty of the garage it once was. The front doors are HUGE and need a bigger close-assist mechanism becasue you must be mindful to pull the door closed when you come in.
All 5 of us ordered different items for breakfast. From a fabulous "Danish Cherry Pancake" to wonderfully executed biscuits and gravy. The cherry pancake is great but we would reccomend ordering the chery sauce on the side. It is quite tasty but sweet and would allow you to control your proportions. Bacon here is THICK and tasty done just right and the gravy for biscuits is creamy and rich. we also were able to sample their "basted" eggs, not fried; a wonderful treatment. The breakfast potatoes are of the cottage fry variety and the taste and firmness was right on.
There were 5 of us who shared 4 meals and even then we left osme food and took more with us for a 6th person who was at work! This restaurant is made for sharing. With tip we spent about $15 per person fo rthe 5 of us.
At lunch with my boys we all sampled the lunch menu (breakfast is avaialable whenever they are open and it is all they serve on Sundays). Boys being boys we had burgers! Actually 2 burgers and 2 sandwiches. Again everybody had left overs! The burgers were flavorful although one son said the barbeque sauce on his cowboy burger was undetectable. The BLT was remarkale in the flavors create din its simplicity as was my Reuben. The Reuben...a LOT of sauerkraut. It was overpowered and the beef was not allowed to shine.
The waffle cut fries were perfectly cooked with a crunchy chewiness that is hard to describe! Also they all told us they had normal tap root beer but on this particular day we all agreed it was possibly the best herb filled and vanilla experience of Root Beer we had ever had.
So, we had way to much food to begin with and they bring us this complimentary Apple Pancake. It was CRAZY good. Not pancake in a traditional sense as it is more dense and eggy but it is soooo good. The boys and I did what we could then took that with us to share around town to RAVE reviews!
People---- The folks who own the Maple Counter know how to encourage customer service. The people are attentive and very pleasant. As I waited for Trip Advisor to add Maple Counter I sent the owners and e-mail to let them know what I had experienced and I got a very nice e-mail back. This place has good people top to bottom!
In short you MUST come here. Be prepared to eat a ton or to share a meal with someone as the portions are quite large. This is a restaurant that is incerdibly comfortable and inviting with menu that is very interesting in its variety and execution.
Parking is available BEHIND the restaurant. Street parking can be tough.
