“Housekeeping needs improved”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 21, 2014

This is a really gorgeous historic hotel. The room we had was spacious (4001). The bed was too soft for me, as I like firmer beds. Every employee we encountered was nice and professional. My only complaint is that the housekeeping didn't do a good job on our room. The bathroom counter had very obviously not been clean. There were hairs on it as well as some sort of white dried-on substance. I cleaned it off with wet toilet paper. There were body hairs on the sheet, about 5 of them, I picked each of them up with a tissue. Also, there was a lot of dust on the vent next to the bed (see picture-doesn't really show well, but it was caked on), and the shower glass was overdue to be cleaned. Now, I am NOT a picky person when it comes to cleanliness, I don't "look for" cracks, rust, and normal things to complain about. These things were clearly neglected. Having said all of that, overall, our stay was satisfactory, they just need to go over things with housekeeping.

Dear shootingforthemoon,

On behalf of the housekeeping department, I sincerely apologize for the condition of your room during your stay.

We strive to ensure our guests have the most exceptional experience possible and we fell short of our goal. We want you to feel comfortable here as if this was “your home away from home” and it is unfortunate that it was not.

I want to stress that the issues you found in your room are not our housekeeping standards and I have spoken to the housekeeper that serviced your room.

Your comments will help us serve you and our guests better in the future and we hope that you choose to stay with us again. If you do, we only hope that you will be satisfied and see the improvement that we have made.

Again, I want to apologize for the lack of attention in your room because we strive to achieve the highest of cleanliness standards.

If you have any additional comments and/or questions please feel free to contact me at exechskp@mwhcc.com or you can call me directly at (509) 524-5122.

We stayed at the Marcus Whitman Hotel in Walla Walla to attend the James Beard Benefit there on July 18th and 19th. Our stay was perfect. The rooms at the hotel are spacious and comfortable, the staff from the front desk to the maid service excellent, and last but not least, the food at the Marc exceptional. Walla Walla has a lot going for it and there are a number of top choice restaurants now but the Marc at the Marcus Whitman is right up there. Of course, the wine in the region is tops! In short, were made to feel at home at the Marcus Whitman and would definitely recommend it to the most discriminating travelers to Walla Walla!

Room Tip: We stayed in the newer section which had apparently just gone thru a makeover. Bathroom was updated...

Friends had reserved the Chefs Table in the Marc at the Marcus Whitman Hotel. We did not know what to expect. I can safely it was one of the finest dining experiences I have ever had. The sentiment is shared by all of us. First we were sat in the kitchen by Dan McCaffrey, Restaurant & Lounge Manager. The wine parings and courses were beautifully presented, perfectly timed and absolutely delicious. The Chef Grant Hinderliter came by with each course to explain the dish, the origin and it's preparation. We were so overwhelmed, what an awesome experience . We could not have been more blown away!!! Scallops, heirloom tomatoes with freshly made mozzarella, lamb, balsamic caviar, top sirloin, table side sorbet with gin, handmade chocolate hazelnut cake. Unbelievable !

Room Tip: Super safe bet

The MW is a grand old hotel from the early 20's that has been refurbished in recent years; however, when I see previous reviews with a 5 star I am expecting a door person and valet. We had to hunt a cart and push ourselves. No welcoming bowl of fruit on reception counter. No "very outstanding breakfast buffet" when is billed as being one. None of the above existed. The breakfast was the same that the Holiday Inn Express serves. Same scrambled eggs out of a can, (not even a hard boiled choice) same sausage, some variety in small sweet rolls. Hot oatmeal, but no variety packets. No fresh or canned fruit. This is in the middle of cherry season after all !!! Is this too much to expect? Selection very minimal. No coffee service table once seated !

On a positive note, reception was very friendly. Suggested dinner options outside of hotel and we very much enjoyed the one we chose. I found a ring in women's rest room, immediately turned it in. I asked if not claimed would it be sent to me. The reply was "No, it is the property now of the MW hotel. If not claimed it is given to Salvation Army or similar charity." Perhaps makes an honest person advertise the item yourself.

All in all, the MW is the only show in town as far as room comfort is concerned.

Room Tip: Read Trip Adviser. We had 7th floor, corner 2 room suite, west and south views. Nice.

We had our daughter's wedding reception at this beautiful jewel of Walla Walla and it could not have been better. The atmosphere at the hotel and the grand ballroom is gorgeous for this kind of event. The staff is outstanding on meeting every request and desire we had and goes out of their way to provide such a professional experience! We had close to 300 guests and they all raved about the plated dinner of the most wonderful steak and salmon you could get anywhere!! If we had to do it all again we would choose the Marcus Whitman hands down!! What a treasure Walla Walla has in this historical hotel and the fabulous staff that runs it all!!

I had a family member get married here. The building was really hot and all of the drink stations were empty and no matter how many times we told the staff they never filled it. The staff were not very friendly. The wedding was catered by the Whitman and it was terrible!!! All three courses were dry and overcooked and just plain awful!!! I would not recommend this place for a wedding of for a nights stay do to the price.

This is a classy and charming older hotel. Like other classics, it has it's quirks, such as bathrooms that are much too small. But I far prefer it to a cookie cutter chain hotel. Beds are comfy. Wifi is free. Service is polite and professional. Rooms are clean. What more could you ask for?
