“Fantastic Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 8, 2014

My wife did several searches for SCUBA tours on the island. These guys had one of the top ratings. Our experience was no different. The guys were on time, friendly, funny, and always returned phone calls. These guys are all about making sure that you have a good, fun, and safe experience.

We did the Sea Tiger and Horse Shoe Reef dives. Certainly the best dives that I have done.

I highly recommend this company. I know that I will be using them again on my next trip to Oahu.

“Instructors and Diving”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 26, 2013

Great instructors taking us to see awesome things on our dives. The sting ray, eels, and fish made for a great time.

“Highlight of our trip back to Hawaii!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 16, 2013

This was a perfect way to get a taste of what its like to experience scuba diving in Hawaii without taking the extra time to get certified. The initial call to the Rainbow Scuba offices was pleasant, quick, and informative. They booked our dive for a party of four in our group for an afternoon session. We wanted to get the morning, but it was already full. They said they only take six people max on their smaller boat. The fact that they had 2 instructors for six people made me feel confident and comfortable that we would be getting all the individual instruction and care for our first ever dive together.

Ken and Jeff were our scuba instructors. Ken was the main guide/instructor. He was patient, articulate, funny, and used a lot of examples, stories, and analogies from his 18 years of experience teaching us first time divers the two biggest things to remember in diving, the 3 basic skills that you need to know, and countless other tips, tricks, and techniques. Jeff was great in re-enforcing everything that Ken taught us and gave us additional instruction. Jeff taught us all the hand signals that he would be using to communicate with us while we were down in the water. For us first time uncertified divers, we would be going no more than 40 ft deep.

For $100 per person (cash), they will give you all the equipment (two tanks, regulator, vest, full wetsuits, mask, and fins) needed to do two dive sites. We went to Turtle Ridge (just outside of Waikiki beach) and Nautilus Reef which was nearby. Each dive comes with a full tank of compressed air (3000psi), which roughly equates to a 30 minute dive. The actual dive duration is determined by the person who uses up their air the quickest, at which time the whole party needs to go up.

We left Kewalo Basin at 1:30pm and it was about a 10-15 min boat ride out to the first site. Before heading down to do our first dive, Ken gave us all a chance to practice the three skills needed to dive in a safe manner. We first practiced with all our gear on in the boat first, then we jumped in the water to give us experience practicing our breathing and the 3 skills in the real environment. After we were able to demonstrate that we could do all the basic skills, Ken/Jeff guided us to grabb a yellow rope that was tied to the bottom of the ocean floor to make our gradual descent to the reef.

It was a wonderful time down at both dive sites. We saw Hawaiian Sea Turtles, Rays, Moray Eels, White-Tipped Sharks, and an abundant number of marine fish indigenous to the Hawaiian Islands. We didn’t see any Octopus, Seals, Whales (haha) during our dive, but it was an amazing time for us first time divers.

While its permissible to bring your own underwater cameras/GoPros/etc…, they advise against it. This is mainly because there is already so much you need to do as a first time diver in terms of adjusting your mask, pressurizing, watching your breathing, watching the guides, etc… the last thing you want to do on top of all that is messing with a camera. Plus, Jeff was taking pics the whole time we were down there, and they post all their pics to flickr.com where you can download to your hearts content for FREE (it takes around 2 days for them to show up). Still if you want to, they have underwater cameras to rent or you can bring your own.

Overall experience was fantastic with Rainbow Scuba. I would highly recommend them!

Positives/Highlights:
• feeding the huge swarm of Black Unicorn fish underwater with a water bottle filled with fish pellets. Such an amazing experience!
• The $100 price tag for each person is an smokin’ deal!

Negatives:
• they talk pretty fast, so you need to be listening intently as they give their instruction. I suspect doing it for so long, they can do it in their sleep, so maybe terms/situations that they understand is common sense for them might not be so for the first timer. The nice thing is that they go over everything multiple times. And you get to practice multiple times before you jump in.
• The equipment is pretty heavy (tanks, weight belt), so you need to be in decent physical condition to move around on the boat with it. Still they will help you gear up and get you into the water with assistance, so just about anyone would be Ok.

Sorry you feel that way but... we spoke with you several times and reserved dives for your husband that you cancelled... costing us time/money and raising our expenses, thank you!

Our level of service, ie... Private Boat & instructors that have dove the area for 18 years, is way above average but our prices are still some of the lowest on island.
