“Waikiki-All you need is a room”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 23, 2010

Have traveled to Hawaii almost every year since 1977.Visited most of the islands, but
mostly spent my time in Waikiki. However because of smoking laws in Hawaii for the last
three years I have been vacationing in Mexico.

Okay off the soap box Missed Hawaii
Through TripAdvisor I found Waikiki Gateway. After emailing the hotel, and receiving a quick response I had a smoking room on the 15th floor.
Nothing fancy /basic room/king bed/balcony[2] Great view of City/Fort Deruessy.
Cool lobby and desk[not just the a/c]
Lot of great food near by and nice walk to beach and The Shorebird[my favourite bar]
This is a hotel for people who want a base ie a place to sleep and come back to after a day at the beach. It is not for first timers expecting waikiki paradise.
As an after thought I stayed here back in the eighties. That was when Nicks fish market
was there.A great retaurant that is no longer there. In conclusion a nice and friendly place to spend your time in paradise.Oh they also have a abc store[who would have of thought]

Yes it's bare bones, but the service is spot on. Every request was handled immediately such as more towels, pillows or directions. No wait whatsoever. Be warned...there is no lounge, bar, restaurant and the pool is meager almost unusable. But...you walk just one block and you begin the street that harbors immense shopping, beach and food!

In a nutshell the location, service and price sell it. Two lanais in the room is pretty cool too, but the walls didn't exactly meet the ceiling. Luckily it's always warm here.

I would stay here again based on customer service alone!

I stayed one night here as I had friends in town visiting. The room itself is clean and quaint. My room had 2 double beds, a CRT TV and a work table where I parked my laptop at. This is a no frill no benefits hotel. If you are looking for something more grande, luxurious, and smack in the middle of Waikiki, this is not it. However, I'd rather pay a low cost and put my money elsewhere with food, entertainment, and activities. The bus line is conveniently outside the hotel and there is also an ABC store downstairs. Continental breakfast comprised of toast, bagels, jelly/jam, yogurt, pineapple and juice. The AC is the ones that you may have in your house that you install yourself so don't expect a quiet hum while you're trying to sleep. Overall though, I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again if I'm looking for another budget hotel at the outskirts of Waikiki

i stayed at the hotel for one week and just chose it because it had a complimentary breakfast and i didnt expect anything great for 2 stars BUT i was wrong.the hotel was better then some 5 star hotels i stayed.the breakfast was simple, with toast and bagel and pineapples, but anyway since its included and it was good.the room had a full kitchen, the pool wasnt too big but never packed and really clean.our room was huge!!we had 2(!!)balconies with view to a park and another park close to the ocean.its central, you can walk through whole waikiki and to the beach and the bus station is right in front of the hotel.the staff was perfectly friendly and really helpful!the room was clean all the time and there was nothing to complain about!it really made the hawaii stay perfect!

I put 99% because there is NOT a restaurant in the hotel that can provide room service. Other than that, this dear old place met every basic need a traveler could require. Ice at any hour, a simple fruit, bagel or toast, coffee continental breakfast, a clean room.. I had a room to myself and it had top drawer little fridge in it that kept things REALLY cold. Housekeeping prompt and thorough.. elevator fast and no long wait (the hotel was perpetually full).. no, of COURSE it's not the Hilton Waikiki for this price, but it is comfortable to come back to, the air conditioner is set at 71 and keeps the room comfortable, the TV worked, my solo room had two queen-sized beds in it and I was told my grandchild could stay in the extra bed (she is a University of Hawaii Manoa student) without any problems or additional costs. The front desk (at least during the day when I had occasion to visit it) was helpful and friendly. My room had a balcony with a partial ocean view and was delightful to visit with a cup of coffee first thing in the morning (there is a coffee machine in the room) and late at night before I went to bed.

If glitz is your game, this hotel will probably not meet your needs.. but for a clean bed, peaceful amenities (the bed was great), a phenomenal location directly across from De Russey Beach, you absolutely CANNOT do better. They provide free high-speed internet on 5 computers with printing options at a dime a page if you require this function.

This was our first trip to Hawaii and we had no idea what to expect. The Hotel was quite adequate as a base of operations. It had some amenities but lacked a restaurant (there were plenty in the area). The room was large and comfortable and had cooking facilites. The hotel is close to several bus and trolley stops that are very handy and reduce the location difficulty; we had no trouble getting to or from attractions from the hotel. The internet in the (free) internet room was very slow.

We really enjoyed our stay and would stay there again. The staff were very friendly, helpful, great. The free breakfast did us just fine, served by Doreen every morning. She is a pleasure to have breakfast with. The rooms were comfy and the beds were very comfortable. We were close to everything we needed. A walk through the park to get to the beach. All the tour busses stopped outside the hotel. There is an ABC store in the hotel.
